Graeme
So, someone please explain to me... why does it seem that all these "genres" are one band deep? Do bands these days go around declaring that they've invented a new genre? Name the band, write a song, find out that it sounds remotely different than the songs from the immitated band, declare a new genre?'Cause where I come from, we have Zeppelin, AC/DC, Journey, Gn'R, Van Halen, Rolling Stones, etc., etc., etc., and while sometimes the differences are rather small, sometimes vast, it's all classic rock. I don't understand why people get their panties in a bunch and split hairs so much with these new generation "genres."Well, in the case of In Flames whom I said created and defined a genre, that genre is Melodic Death Metal. It's not exactly one band deep and by no means is it a new thing either.I do agree that all the kind of new wave genres like thrashcore and stuff like that do get a bit confusing and by all accounts do sound similar. With In Flames, the "Gothenburg" sound was something that no one had ever tried before, using violins, keyboards and harmonised guitars to make death metal something else entirely, more listenable, poetic and in my own opinion a whole different beast to the brutal noise it was before. For this reason it was different and that's why In Flames started a new genre, it wasn't like it is nowadays where people just set out to say "Let's take generic heavy metal and add this to it, it can be called (inset whatever they added to it) metal"

ffrankwhite
i dont think theres any bands that i'd have not exist, given the choice. just cuz i dont dig em dont mean somebody else dont. and a lot of bands are a very necessary part of the evolution or de-evolution of music that gives birth to a lot of bands that i like. a lot of good bands always sprout as almost reactions to bands/music that they think sucks dick. so its all necessary and hey, even if it aint, even if just a handfull of motherfuckers get off on a particular band, its all good crap has to exist logically for there to be a good. A better way to say it would be: the world would be a better place for me-personally, with out them and what's with all this "core" shit noadays? hardcore, metalcore, screamocore? thrashcore?!sounds like some dodgy porno Edited December 29, 2007 by Spark the determination
DopeSickGirl
So far as I'm aware theres;Grindcore (Napalm Death, Dillenger Escape Plan, etc) - Characterized by heavily distorted, tuneddown guitars, with crust punk-influences on the guitar parts; hardcore punk and thrash metal drumming. Songs rarely lasting more than two minutes and are often just a few seconds long. Vocals consist of growls and higher-pitched screamsHardcore (Black Flag, Minor Threat etc) - Similar to standard punk rock but more serious, faster and heavier sounding. Songs are normally short and fast with serious lyrics about politics.Emocore (Bleeding Through, Atreyu, etc.) - Pretty much just emo played louder and faster. Same self-pitying, self-depricating lyrics but with a much heavier guitar and louder, faster drumming.Metalcore (Biohazard, Madball, etc) - Pretty miuch impossible to define how it sounds because most of the bands use a massive mix of all genre's to make their sound there own. Heavy and guitar based with fast drumming.Thrashcore (The Accused, Deep Wound, etc) - Another sub-genre of punk, Its distinguishing features include high-tempos, shouted vocals, short song length, normally about a minute, and mainly politically-charged lyrics. My kinda music. xDSGx
