Like in 1991. Indiana '91 wasn't good

God, the Indiana 91 voice is fucking brutal and awful. It is actually disgusting sounding.

That's actually my favorite show of the UYI tour. It may have been 'damaged' but that makes it sound fucking raw and powerful and fit the atmosphere really well. You could tell they were pretty into that gig...

They have no effect on the voice.

Lol...they can and DO cause throat/mouth cancer. They have a great impact on your voice.

Smoking doesn't have that much of an effect on the voice.

Clearly, you have no experience on the subject or else you'd know better. I'm an ex smoker and back when I smoked, my voice had ALOT more rasp. Just listen to middle aged women who smoke. They sound like fucking chainsaws.

you are right, smoking does effect voice. I`m a chain smoker, and my voice is really fucked and "deep" these days. BUT what effects even more is drinking...

He had a wholly unique voice circa '93 - good mix of rasp and lower register vocals (music aside, his vocals on Spaghetti Incident were some of his best). That was kind of his peak. Then his voice began to deteriorate because the style he uses is damaging to vocal cords and his lifestyle probably caught up with him, too.

He sounds very good nowadays for what he's doing and considering his age, but I don't agree that he's better than ever.

Cigars? They don't affect the voice, unless you inhale them, which no one does.

You're talking to a former 2-3 pack a day 10 year long Marlboro/Newport habit. My voice wasn't affected. Sure, smoking isn't good for the voice, but it doesn't completely change voices, an example being the cause of Axl's rasp/texture etc. That's not from smoking, that's from singing. Axl doesn't smoke cigarettes anyway, and hasn't in a long time.

I actually disagree. I'm not saying that I haven't seen 93-clips like a thousand times, but many times I think he sounded like he was singing out of a pipe. Still..whatever voice he has, it's always amazing somehow, in some way.

The I.R.S from Paris might even surpass the insane one from Rio in 06. The same song a few months ago he couldn't even sing half of the verses. He's been pretty awesome on this tour. Every tour he's ever been a part of he's been hit and miss, but the 09/10 version of the Chinese Democracy might be the most consistent he's ever been. That doesn't mean his voice is better than ever, but it is more consistently great than the majority of his touring career.

I'm new to the forum and was wondering do you or any others know why his vocals are hit and miss? I'm no vocal expert! I think he's singing very well on this European leg of the tour.

His voice is now great. I guess he has been to many voice specialists over the years. Is it now better than ever? I do not know.

There is one song in which I really like his voice and how it fits the purpose: Sympathy for the Devil. His voice and the devilish seductive attitude go perfectly with the film. He is singing low in some parts and then also quite high, nam.

In general I like his voice in songs like Don’t Cry and Patience where he is singing in a quite effortless way. His voice has enough character even then.

There are not that many male singers I can immediately recognise from their voice alone. It is easier of course if they are singing one of their own hit songs. It is quite easy to spot Axl’s voice whatever the song.

Nope. "Lies" was his peak as a vocalist in the studio, particularly the songs "You're Crazy" and "One In A Million."

I also think it might have been his peak in a live setting too. Sweet Child is the song he has consistently butchered over the years, but he absolutely nailed it at the Ritz in early February 1988:

And then in late March 1988, he knocked it out of the park singing "You're Crazy" and "I Used To Love Her" on the Late Show:

Axl's voice was starting to go helium by Argentina '93. It had lost a lot of that throaty rasp.

It had an odd, clean rasp. Hard to explain. It didn't sound as broken glass sounding and ragged as 1991, and he had a lot of control over it, but he didn't have any of the power that he had in '92.

Actually, you could have a fair argument that Axl's voice sounded its best before Appetite even came out... Listen to this right through (esp 3.50 sec onwards..). I dont recall a version of Dont Cry on the UYI tour that sounded half as good as this

Yes, those early Don't Cry performances were pretty incredible. Here's another one:

Almost like his voice is trying to harmonize itself, right?
