Darth Maul was a badass. I can't believe Lucas killed him off in the 1st film only to replace him with Christopher Lee as Dooku. Lucas should have had Darth Maul reign as the Sith to beat until Revenge of the Sith and had Anakin defeat him rather than Dooku.

He was trained to a small degree to use lightsabers, only because he had mechanical implants that allowed him to.

He could not use the force at any point in his life, nor was he ever trained as a Sith, just as a mercenary.
