Man, Liston was kinda nuts wasn't he?

Thats not real footage, its a clip from a film and also not how it happened, if a black man in America, especially one like Liston who was already being hounded by cops, to the point where he was forced to leave two states, if he had fired a gun in a crowded casino like that he would've never seen the light of day again.  Apparently the real story goes Ali came up to him hounding him at a crap table and Liston turned around, slapped him, grabbed him by the lapels and said 'now you listen to me you n!gger f@ggot, interrupt me like that again and i'll stick you in the fuckin ground'.

i tell you who did fire a gun at someone though, it was Ali at Fraziers people from a few storeys up in Manilla, it was a prank with a blank firer which Fraziers people were not aware of.

So not quite a re-enactment, what would you call this? an embellished retelling?

Reading what really happened, doesn't make Liston sound any less scary actually

I guess embellished.  Liston was frightening though, i mean what does a man have to do to get chased out of two states by the filth?  That up there is a clip from the film The Greatest made in 77 i think about Alis life starring Ali.  He was a leg breaker for mob man Blinky Palermo. Sonny that is.

Yeah the beatdown he gave Patterson was like a force of nature.

Twice.  Yknow Cus D'amato did everything he could to make that fight not happen, blamed it on Listons mob ties etc.  Cus testified against the mob in the 50s and lived his whole life in fear of them but what he was really worried about was he knew Patterson couldnt hold a decent shot on the whiskers.

So, Liston; whacked by the mob or not?

Not sure how anyone could make an assertion one way or another, total lack of information out there, no one really knows except, if he was killed, the mob men who did it.  So with the absence of evidence why cling to a theory to which there is no reasonable basis, thats my idea.

My sister used to watch a show called Big Fat Gypsy weddings or something or other, unbelievably tacky ITV3 show, and it changed my conception of what I perceived 'gypsies' to be. Hitherto, I thought they were a swarthy bucolic romantic people with impossibly beautiful women, given to song and dance. Now...

Well, the discrepancy is best demonstrated in pictures,

I used to think gypsies were this,

But, in this television show, they looked like this,

I said to my sister at the time, 'are you sure these are gypsies - are you sure they are not just chavs?'

How is pointing out a group by saying "that lot over there" racist?

Well it could be but it could also be saying these lot, them lot, as in those guys.  i do it all the time, i referred to Bran (and his heavy metal fraternity) on here as 'you lot' earlier today on this forum.  And since it's too vague to prove the other persons intent then you can really go nowhere with it i suppose.

Exactly. If you and I were standing chatting and I wanted to point you towards another group I would say "that lot over there". Nothing racist about it at all, even if they are a bunch of thieving, hook nosed Gypos.

Chav is a term that has its roots in people talking about gypsys.  Some people even refer to chavs as pikeys, which I'm sure you know is used to refer to gypsys.

Yes, but what happened to this,

03-violin-2.jpg

And how did it become this,

Big-Fat-Gypsy-Wedding-carols-and-Caravan

These people do not even ethnically resemble one-and-another!!

The former seem to approximate the historic tradition behind the 'Romani' people, an Indian diaspora into Europe. The latter are the horse droppings of chav Britain.

Cuz theres a difference between romanys and a bunch of Paddys who responded to potato famine by just moving about the place, some of which settled in England.  And they've not got over the transient lifestyle basically
