Your Experience As A Fan Of GnR

Recommended Posts

I have never experienced anything close "musically related" as to what I experienced with GnR from 1988-1993.

It was a magical time and GnR was the sound track to my high school, college and young adult days.

Axl Rose is the greatest rock singer of all time, and for those five years GnR was the biggest rock band in the world.

I listened to GnR pretty much every day for those five years.

My 2nd moment, which doesn't compare at all, like maybe 1% of what it was like to discover and then live with GnR, came last year when I discovered a band called Hardcore Superstar. Heard a song on youtube called Here Comes that Sick Bitch......then a song called Somebody Special and I was hooked. Stayed up until like 4 in the morning (on a work day) listening to their entire back catalog.

While it didn't match up to my GnR era, it was still amazing to discover what turns into your second favorite band ever - and when you discover them for the first time it isn't just one song or album, but 8-9 albums worth of material!

********

The other thing that was amazing about GnR back then was that they released albums. Back in the 80s bands used to release albums EVERY YEAR or every other year. None of this idiotic ACCEPTED BY YOU PEOPLE thing of "oh, an album every five years is OK" type crap.

Axl gave us an album in 87, 89 and two in 91. That's how you keep momentum alive. By releasing music for your fans to enjoy. This one album every 20 years or every decade is just a slap in the face to the fans. But like lap dogs, we accept it. Nothing else we can do, really. Except sit back and wish our favorite singer would share music with us. His fans.

I'm still into it. I was into it even when there was nothing at all you know... the silent years. I think old Guns was always like the ideal hard rock band in my mind, at least on some level.

It's not that they were the best band in the world or most influential. It just fuckin' rocked, and had a lot of character and magic to it.

Now, I'm still a fan cause there is nothing quite like Axl's voice and I'm a big fan of Chinese. There is still something there to keep it alive for me, even if Axl is a very difficult artist to be a fan of.

So... while the way I feel about the whole Gn'R saga has changed, and I'm not like a kid in a candy store anymore, I still love the band and my excitement is still there when Axl actually does something cool which is not very often.

I think he'll release more music in the future and I'll still be here when he does to discuss it. I'll probably always be a Guns fan.

If there was no Internet how could you be a fan nowdays?

Life was possible before Internet, believe me... LOL

I just wish Internet wouldn't eat our lives like it does nowadays.

Back in the day you could be a fan by listening to the radio, watching MTV all day long and reading magazines, rock magazines... then going to the record store to get albums and hang out with fellow fans, exchange posters, photos, shirts.... It was really cool :)

I understand what your saying. I was really talking about the lack of music for the last 2 decades. Most of the time there isn't anything to be a fan of unless you look at them on the internet. Even with the constant touring they have only been to my area 1 time in the last 25 years. Two times canceled shows I was going to. I like their music and will be in line to buy a new cd but I'm about tired of all of this other stupid shit.

Great post. Pretty much sums up my feelings as well.

There will never be anything to top being around here in the years leading up to the release of Chinese Democracy. Everything from the occasional leaks and endless obsession of every note of those, to the release teases ("soon isn't the word"), the management changes, sightings here and there, etc. The best was probably the night Axl showed up on Eddie Trunk. I happened to be listening to the show that night and jumped on here. Unforgettable moment and I still occasionally listen to that show. Shortly after that, Axl showed up on a few tracks on Sebastian Bach's Angel Down album and then finally the 2008 release announcement that led to Dr Pepper calling GnR out and having to offer everyone a free DP after the album did in fact release in 2008.

They're weird "good" times that most people would never understand outside of the GnR community...lol, but good nevertheless.

That's the last period of time I had any optimism for this band, and it's been almost 10 years since.

20 years a fan. In that time, one album (which I loved). A couple of good tours. Constantly changing ranks. A million disappointments and false alarms. Always got the feeling the fans cared about Guns N' Roses more than the band did. Think we were all wrong for years but have steadily become right. I gave up about 3 or 4 months ago. Axl, judging from his performances, lack of drive, lack of new material etc. gave up about 3 or 4 years ago, so I outlasted him at least. All of us who told all our friends about what Axl was working on up to CD and his bold vision and so on have been made fools of. Not by C.D. - which was a divisive, contradictory, exasperating, beautiful fucked up mess of an album. Exactly what it should have been. - but by Axl giving up his grand dreams, diluting his goals and becoming the last things anyone who ever loved and admired his talent - hell, even his detractors and haters (who at least found him interesting & acerbic enough to be worthy of hate) ever wanted him to be. Fat, comfortable, boring, safe and mediocre.

When after 6 years '2-3 new songs in concert' is touted as a major reason for excitement. You are following a shitty band.

When that band fails to deliver even one new song in concert you are following a desperately shitty band.

When a year later, vague comments from the lead singer's caretaker's son that he's 'trying to make "something" happen' are supposed to be a cause for optimism, it's time for 'why the fuck are you following this band unless it's as some sort of patheticness-porn'?

Who's in Guns N' Roses, Axl? "I can't tell you"

Where's the 2 albums you have in the can, Axl? "I can't tell you"

Why don't you seem to write or record with the recent lineup Axl? "I can't tell you"

When are you going to put any songs out Axl? It's been 7 years "Uh, uh..um...we're looking very seriously..."

Why do you keep losing members, Axl? "They put us in a compromising situation where..."

Who manages your band, Axl? "My nanny"

Yeah. Fuck you, dude.

Guns N' Roses 2015 isn't a band, it's Axl Rose's daycare center.

To quote a phrase, I don't hate you - I'm just disappointed you turned into everything you said you'd never be.

Well, that was the last time something fresh was happening. And after a lot of our years of waiting, many things were finally coming to fruition. It's unfortunately been mostly stale since.

Without internet, a fanbase wouldn't exist anymore ...

Of course some people would still like to listen to GN'R, but a fanbase, as an "organized" group of people, wouldn't exist ...

You and I, as individuals, probably wouldn't have anyone else to talk about GN'R anymore ... and that's something ... all of us should look more carefully at this, respect what we got and stop fighting against each other ...

Probably will never have the excitement I had for GNR from release of ChiDem 2008 to RIR 2011

Fuck me if that has topped the table of exciting things in your life you must've had a fuckin' rough one

I just wish Internet wouldn't eat our lives like it does nowadays.

Yes. :) I remember reading rock magazines and having a lot of other fans as pen pals. And of course there was MTV.

I will say that the Internet has made things light years easier, though. Information is immediate and it's a lot easier to find out about tour dates, special events, etc.

In terms of interacting with bands, though? I think it's hurt the bands in some cases. Guns N' Roses really doesn't give more or less information than they used to in the 1989 - 1993 era, but because *other* bands and celebrities are so open about sharing now, GnR's perhaps considered very closed off and archaic in their fan interactions, and we all bemoan the lack of information and news (and I'm not judging that. I am making an observation).

And in some cases, I think that the filter that used to be kept in place by the lack of proximity helped, LOL. There have been a few musicians I've stopped liking because they're such complete assholes on social media. They probably always were assholes, but the fact that they put their true colors out on Facebook/Twitter/etc. makes it a lot easier to see.

On the other hand if II had been able to directly tweet Axl, Duff or Slash when I was 12, I would have been so psyched about it.

Uhhh - 100% incorrect. GnR members and Axl were interacting with the media all the time. They did MTV interviews and were always in the popular rock magazines. To imply that Axl does the same amount of media NOW that he did in 1989-93 is just 100% wrong.

LOL, so you will stop being a fan of a band if a member is a jerk on Twitter, but you are cool with a guy beating up his girlfriends or making them crap in a cat litter box.

Serious question. Is there anything that Axl has done in his past - or is there anything bad Axl could do in his future - that you couldn't find some way to sugarcoat it and turn it into a positive?

You're right about the celebrities sharing too much.... I've felt disappointed by many already because of what they said on Tw or FB. Before social media, the celebrity would communicate via the shows or interviews or press releases. Now there is no filter, hence, Axl and his photo of gonads or his breakfast sausages, lol.... It takes away the mystique, but at the same time, that is because most people don't really know what to tweet that is not mediocre daily stuff. Some others use it in very creative ways.

I like that Axl is not a social media whore, but I'd love for him to tweet more things concerning his thoughts on animal cruelty or random news. And of course, much more about his music. :shrugs:

And oh yeah, I don't even want to think what would it be of the 13 year-old me with available Axl on Twitter. I guess he would have blocked me already :(

LOL, so you will stop being a fan of a band if a member is a jerk on Twitter, but you are cool with a guy beating up his girlfriends or making them crap in a cat litter box.

He's kinda got a point y'know. Around 93 onwards you couldn't find no fuckin' mention of GnR in magazines, i remember buying issues of Kerrang and there'd be just this little sidebar thing on GnR or something...and if you didn't have cable you didn't have MTV so info was really light on the ground. Only gig of theirs i ever saw was the Tokyo one and to be honest it kinda put me off music. That sounds odd but i was 10/11 years old at the time and just getting into music as a thing and this was the first band that was even vaguely contemporary that i had gotten into and i was just dying for any shit on this band i couldn't find it nowhere. I don't think i even so much as heard Axls speaking voice until ages after getting into the band and being kinda stunned by how deep it was. Most I could do was just get the albums and thats it. I had no idea about St Louis and riots and stuff like that. I had this one book i got called Guns n Roses In Their Own Words and to be honest, being quite young, i often didn't understand what the fuck they were referring to.

So I guess that answers the question of how you were a fan before the internet, you listened to the fuckin' music  I haven't seriously listened to GnR in years, UYI 1 & 2 or Appetite and y'know i could singalong to those fuckin' songs backwards if i wanted to, thats how much i listened to them. An album was fuckin' amazing for me, when i got a new one it just got listened to...and listened to....and listened to....and listened to. I'd wear tapes out just playing it over and over and over.

The best i got was like we FINALLY got cable but like jackshit actual channels so its all the free bullshit ones like The Box, the music video channel YOU control  and I'd have this blank VHS like ready near the machine so if i ever walked in and someone had requested a GnR song i could throw it in there and hit record and hey presto, video! I had like You Could Be Mine, November Rain, Jungle, SCOM videos, all with the beginnings missing

Serious question: why the fuck are you still responding to me? I blocked your ass weeks ago, but when I looked at this site on my phone just now, I see that you apparently keep responding to my posts, mentioning me by name and trying to get a reaction even though I am clearly not answering you. Do you like talking to yourself? I mean, the fixation is disturbing. Stalker.

Serious answer, even though you don't deserve one: no, I'm not okay with Axl being a domestic abuser any more than I'm okay with Steven being one. And I won't make excuses or justify it. So don't you dare put words in my mouth on that. But the way people go on about Axl on this site for shit they know nothing about, being fatphobic, ignoring the fact that he seems to be ill and generally acting like assholes- isn't excusable either. This is a human being with some bona fide mental illness and emotional issues and at some point continually poking him with a stick over the same damn issues, and blaming him for any and everything that ever went wrong with the band, becomes cruel. Do you honestly think the guy wants to stand onstage and sound terrible, or could there possibly be something happening that we don't know about?! There's a difference between sugarcoating and trying to assess a situation from an objective standpoint.

And I've never actually said I like Axl. I don't like anyone in this band as a person except Duff and possibly BBF.

Since you can't figure it out on your own, apparently, you're blocked. You're certainly welcome to blather on all you want, but you're wasting your time because I will not be reading, responding or giving you another nanosecond of my attention. Go away and bother someone else with your confrontational foolish bullshit.

I'm not cool with it at all.

But I'm just here for the music. I don't idolize or worship or put musicians (or athletes, actors, etc) up on a pedestal. I really couldn't care less what these people are like in real life. There are some people out there that look up to Axl or celebrities like they are Gods. If you are over the age of 15, I find it weird and creepy and sort of pathetic. Axl Rose or Slash is not a better person than the dude who made my subway sandwich yesterday. Just because they have one skill that they are extremely good at, just because I've listened to their music for 30 years, doesn't mean they are "better" people are deserve more respect than anybody else. I treat the guy who bags my groceries the same way I'd treat Axl or Slash if I ran into them tonight.

I love John Lennon's music. All reports are that he was a crappy person. I'm sure most of the athletes I follow and actors I like are probably arrogant jerks in real life.

I'm a bit different than a lot of people on the forums in that while Axl is my favorite rock singer of all time, I don't idolize or worship him as a person. I've never understood celebrity worship by adults. Stella is one of those posters who seems to always paint Axl into a God like figure. Worshipping Axl but then saying you stop being fans of bands because they are jerks on Twitter......just thought that was pretty funny.

Go away and bother someone else with your confrontational foolish bullshit.

lol

she is mad now!!!

I don't think they are better people but Axl (and Slash and the rest of GN'R) have a meaning in my life the guy making sandwiches at Subway will never ever dream of having (lol, like he would want to! :P) but you know what I mean?

I think we all here have a special affection for this people who have influenced us or accompany us through a lifetime. Well, at least for me, they have it and they don't mean the same to me than the garbage guy..... but I know what you mean... I respect everybody out there and I'm not okay with Axl in a lot of things he's done and said but that's what comes with "fanhood". I support his music, his singing, his writtings and I might worship him at times too and that's because he makes me extremely happy :)

Now what I dont like about the way you're approaching Stella is that you are being too authoritarian because IMO being a fan of anything is a personal experience and you can't dictate her how to feel about her idols. If she wants to worship the shit coming out of Axl's hole, that is totally up to her and it doesn't affect you in any significative way, so you should leave her alone because you're bullying her and that's not something an adult should be proud of.

I dont think it's funny what she said about celebs and Twitter. Actually, I agree with her and it has nothing to do with Axl because Axl is not a jerk on Twitter. He rarely tweets and he's almost on a "cracking jokes" line of tweeting. He's not much different from the way he is in "real life"... umm... so I don't know why you say that.

lol

Sure. It serves your right! :headbang:

But what if the guy makes a really good sandwich?

I understand your point and I think we agree.

I find celebrity worship extremely weird, so it always strikes me as strange (and pathetic) when I see adults doing it. Axl is one of my favorite singers of all time - favorite rock singer of all time - and I listen to GnR more than all other bands put together. So it just seems really weird - and funny - to me when somebody like your stella constantly praises Axl, but then says she stopped being fans of a band because somebody was a jerk on Twitter. I suppose that is what I find so amusing - when people have a double or different standard for Axl than they do for other musicians or people. Bullying???? Come on, you're better than that. If she is going to dish it out and act like she is friends with Axl - then she shouldn't cry when people question her on it.

Her little rant she just fired off features more insults - and way ruder comments - about me than anything I've ever said about her. I've lumped her in with the people who idolize Axl's every move. I've never swore or called her vulgar names, I've never made personal attacks against her, etc. Calling somebody a stalker because they've made 4-5 comments about you on a FORUM - that's how her brain works, lol. Several times I've seen her make posts where she claims a band member is doing something or why they did something. Never saying "I think........" but just making a statement about Axl or an ex-member like it was FACT. So I made a couple comments about her being actual friends with the band. That's not bullying or being a stalker. Her rant was way worse than anything I've ever said about her.

And dude!!! Didn't I read yesterday where you told some guy his opinion was like sh*t on Steven Hawking's pants or something like that?

At the end of the day, I think people need to realize this is just a rock band, and this is just a rock forum, and not take things so personally.

Stella can worship and idolize Axl Rose all she wants. Good for her. But that doesn't mean the rest of the adults on the forum can't comment on how strange it is.

Look at you and I. We've had numerous disagreements and fights on here. And we agree on a lot of things. But we can still chat about whatever is in the very next topic in a respectful manner. I'm not sure your Stella is capable of that. :shrugs: Maybe the Axl worship comments just hit too close to home for her. Maybe she's more normal in other topics?
