Damn_Smooth
So was this the last show GNR played, for which no video exists (aside from any official footage the band may have)?I believe that there isn't anything from the recent wedding that everyone loves to bitch about. I haven't seen it if there is.
Mr. Dude
What a legendary gig. It must've been hella tough to follow a well-oiled rock n roll machine like the Goo Goo Dolls though.
Cosmo
Don't like the vibe nuGnR had back in 2001 and 2002. Of course it was a very talented band but Axl looked and sounded really bad and the overall band imagery was messed up. It also felt like they were just a bunch of individual players paid to play together and put up with one another rather than a band. Yes, that is the case and always has been with nuGuns N' Roses but it was too obvious in 2002. Of course, CD came from that era and I love it so songwriting-wise, this was their peak and Axl seemed excited about the future, but in terms of live shows, nuGnR reached their peak in '06, IMO. Axl was on fire, he was agressive, his voice was amazing, he looked awesome and the band was tight. Brain sounded a lot better than he did in 2002, Finck actually looked like someone in GnR instead of a hired member, Pitman put less effects into songs like SCOM and YCBM and Axl still had that fuel, still had that attitude. The only thing that was better in 2002 was Bucket's Nightrain and KOHD, IMO.Pitman's electronics in SCOM and YCBM were incredible But I agree, Bucket had the BEST Nightrain soloThey sucked Especially YCBM But yeah, nothing can top that Nightrain solo

Cosmo
The pre-bumble slide guitar version is really meh, IMO. Bumble really made it better. And the way Axl started singing it since '09 is a lot better too.
Bobbo
01/02 sounded exactly like they looked. Frankensteined.06/07 sounded like they had a little engine that could mentality when everybody else knew that they couldn't. Sadly, this was the peak of nu guns' potential.'11-present- a straight up parody of what they could never even dream of being themselves.

Dazey
The best Gn'R gig, ever. So much new music was played that night, as well as old songs that hadn't been played in YEARS (in some cases, since 1986!) The 01 lineup was by far the best GN'R has ever had. And the setlist that night was incredible. What do you think about this show now? I wonder if Axl will come back this year like he did in 2001 and play a shit ton of new songs, look and sound great, and have a tight band behind him.You don't half talk a load of fuckin' shite at times! Nosaj Thing
I wouldn't be surprised if Axl hummed the solos to him just like Dave Mustaine had to do with Friedman. Probably but then why would Axl thank him and kiss Slash ass on the UYI booklet? If he had hummed the solos to him, I don't see the reason to thank him. I remember Dizzy Reed saying that once he heard the final version of Estranged without Axl vocals he was blown away, strange 'cause you know, that was all Axl, no? It's strange for someone that was part of AFD and UYI yet he hasn't done fuck all worth mentioning since. Why are you always changing the subject? This was about Slash's writing not Axl's Chinese Democracy. Damn, I understand some people were disappointed by that record but I don't see the reason to bring that up now. Nosaj Thing
Thanks Slash for the killer guitar melodies --The UYI II linear notes. Notice how AXL is the songwriter. Not Slash, not Axl/Slash. Just Axl. That's because lyrics and the piano parts were written by Axl and Axl only. It was an Axl song, nobody is trying to change that. Fact is, Slash wrote all the solos and Axl thanked him in the booklet. Thank you for proving my point though.

No way no how could you say it was a best of anything related to GNR. What you saw WAS the compromise..the fall back to the next acceptable thing... Axls grand vision? Hardly ..it was who ever was willing to get signed on for huge amounts of money to play a role that the world in large knew loved and understood. Curiosity being what it is allowe some measure of acceptance.. and that goodwill eventually went away. A mantle of indifference settled on GNR followed by outright mocking and hostility. Hardly the midnight crowds that showed up to get UYI and the mass hysteria of all things GNR 91-93You had in essencene three solo acts within the concept... Buckethead and his show, Fink doing his NIN look and impersonation and of course Axl. On the third guitar was a personal friend(HUGE) who at very best might have been able to play in a bar band and was out of there in a New York second . Axl had his moments and the idea was trhilling for a nano second before the whole concept lost its wheels. The new music was and still is "forgetable" when placed next to the original material . The new music relatively speaking had no cultural impact and is admired by relatively a small amount of people..and thats ok...music is personal taste and personal choice. There were so many flaws in the way the whole thing went down...for me there was an arrogance in even concieving the idea that the orginals could be replaced as if they were parts on a car... and that arrogance went so far as the fanbase and audience...and still holds true to this very day.Im glad that so many enjoy the new concept..really but damn that new reality is soo watered down and diluted that it does its talking for itself.. its accepting the mediocre in place of excellence and fooling yourself that its as good as it could ever be.I had the 01-01-01 bootleg.. I saw them on thier trainwrecked tour twice.. i was excited that there was POSSIBILITY but then the whole thing just came across as one big FUCK YOU as the leaks occoured, as GNR slipped into obscurity and the whole fire in the belly- spit in the eye- live fast and die young and live large concept became a shit show of undelivered promises, rumour and speculation .For me , once upon a time GNR stood for something...it had something really cool to say and do...
volcano62
Hey y'all. I've been around forever. Never really felt the need to post, because opinions are subjective. But a few things said here just kinda irritated me. I've been to a lot of gnr shows. From the clubs in l.a to cross country endeavors, back to the residency. I will say that in the 100's of shows I've seen, 01/01/01 is by far the greatest show i've ever seen. The excitement was unreal. the anticipation was like nothing I've ever seen. The chants of guns n roses echoed through the casinohours upon hours before the doors opened. The goo goo dolls was a separate show.(for any confusion). But when we finally got in & gnr hit thestage, it was magic. ththe intensity in the bands faces, along with the thrill of hearing new music. To say it was exciting was a understatement.I personally thought axl looked a lot better at the H.o.b that night then he did a couple weeks later in Rio. So when you just listen to the bootleg of the show, you Dont quite get the full experience of the show. Anyway that's my 2 cents. Thanks for sharing your experience! I would have loved to be there! Mr. Dude
It really was one of those moments in your life that last forever. I spoke to rick Rubin after the show & his response was "that was the best show I've ever seen". So the feeling was mutual from a whole lot of people there. I was at the long forum show in Inglewood on the uyi tour, & for me 01/01/01 was better. I just wish this DVD would see the light of day.I think some kind of box set with Sean Beavan's Chinese Democracy along with the HOB show (and maybe Rio 01) would be cool. Of course, the average casual fan might not be interested, but a lot of bands are releasing things like this to capitalize on as well as cater to the so-called super-fans who'll actually spend a decent chunk of change. I'd buy it.
Powerage5
FFS, do we need to turn every single thread into an Axl vs. Slash argument? That has no place in this thread, so let's keep it out of here.
