TiedHands
I remember someone found out, but it's foggy. Something like "Freedom for the People" or something similar. I remember the "Freedom" part...
gnrfan2007
It is the *phrase* for "democracy" in Chinese. There is no literal 1-to-1 translation for "democracy", so it is more like "freedom of the people" or whatever english definition you would describe "democracy".So, if you wanted a Chinese translation for "Chinese Democracy", you would simply just write "democracy" (freedom of the people) in Chinese.Get it? So I think it means something like a system where the people come first or something, hence democracy. Edited July 8, 2013 by TombRaider

German works that way too, sometimes. Like the word building is Hochhaus, which literally means tall house (Hoch / Haus) or the word for ambulance is Krankenwagen, which literally means a car for the ill (Kranke / Wagen). In Chinese, you have stuff like: Missile 导弹 (导 guide) y (弹 bomb). Missile - guided bomb. In many languages, you put two or three words together and you get a new concept. Think of the English words firefighter or hippopotamus, which is Greek for river horse.

Well democracy itself merely stems from the ancient Greek demokratia which means ''rule by the people' (demos: people in classical Athens). Languages do not operate in a vacuum.
