Back to WTTJ for a moment i was wondering about other peoples thoughts about the"serpentine" refference.Do you think he's just singing about sexual domination on the ladder to success?I always thought he was in a round about way reffering to the serpent in the tree of knowledge in the garden of eden.

Hmm, seems like another double entendre. So yeah, both.

Literal meaning = sex in exchange for "favors"

Figurative meaning = serpent and all the symbolism that goes with it (evil, temptation, etc.)

Good catch.

I always thought it was "them" for free. I hear "them." I've never seen a lyric book or anything.

So no consensus yet on the "Welcome to the Jungle" lyrics?

As for "Nightrain," Axl does sing "SPEEDIN' like a space brain in one of the verses."

Always thought he was singing "Spinnin' like a space brain." Speedin' could be in, though, now that I really think about it.

I used to think the lyrics in Patience were, "And the streets don't change but maybe the names."

Again back to WTTJ i see in earlier posts about "tasting the bright lights but you wont get them for free"I see this as a refference to heroin, when a user does small amounts to satisfy their needs they call it "just a taste"they fool themselves into believing they are in control when they are not and for that they pay.Just my opinion

From personal experience I would be more inclined to associate "bright lights" with cocaine rather than heroin, but that's a matter of opinion I guess. :shrugs:

You maybe right it could not mean drugs at all but more the illusion of being in control and thinking your only sampling but your just fooling yourself and that will cost you more than you realize.

That's the way I hear it. To me, the verse prior is more explicitly about drugs: "We are the people who can find / whatever you may need / if you got the money, honey / we got your disease."

when I first heard UYI1 it was on a CD somebody had burned for me, so I had no tracklist. First song starts to play and I'm loving it, then it gets to the chorus and i swore i was hearing "Rednecks go to hell" i was like... yeah, fuck rednecks!

felt so dumb when i bought the album like 2 days later

It's saying that you can find wealth and fame in the city, but it'll corrupt you to the core. Think "Bright Lights, Big City."

It might be a drug reference, but it's more about getting in with people with money, (whether they're movie stars or rock stars or the people that run their careers) and having to do things you don't like. He's telling the girl that she's going to have to drop the hard to please/hard to get thing if she's going to get the VIP pass, you're going to have to whore yourself out a bit. He might be talking about a girl trying to get backstage in hopes of becoming a rock wife (has it ever worked?), or a young starlet coming to Hollywood and it's either porn, the pole, or serving pancakes to make a living. Or it could be a struggling actor or musician doing what they can to make it.

The song's pretty much about doing what you can to make it, trying to survive when you have no money, and trying to make into that VIP world.
