do you think the label has lost money by not releasing Goin Down on an album?

Comparing artists is always a bit difficult.Let's say you're an independent artist recording stuff at home on your laptop. Your budget and the break even point are way different to somebody on a major label.Even comparing artists that are on major labels is difficult. One artist might have a fan base who isn't as into computers as another one. So one has more fans who download stuff for free, while the other has more fans who go to Walmart to buy the cd. For example. It's no secret that a lot of people have no problems paying more for a cup of coffee in the morning than they are prepared to spend on entertainment such as music. There's a reason why many artists put out those special deluxe super editions of their albums. They know their hardcore fans will happily spend hundreds of dollars on a nice package while the majority illegally downloads the music for free....

This is a quote from Jarmo at Htgth in a thread discussing the Pitman interview. I can't work out if we are meant to be grateful that GnR don't put out deluxe super editions....

If Jarmo's stance is the same as the official camp it seems to be that there is no point to new music because we are all downloading motherfuckers. Don't know what gave them that impression?

^^ But they fail to realise that these "downloading motherfuckers" only illegally download new GNR music because there's never any legal way of obtaining it. If gunsnroses.com had put up a HQ version of Going Down, Blood In The Water and the Better remixes they could've made a tidy profit in the last couple of days. Instead they do jack shit and it gets leaked anyway.

If they've lost money due to the leaks they only have themselves to blame, through their sheer refusal/inability to release this stuff.

I think it's a matter of everybody involved "agreeing".

It's not enough to have a bunch of finished songs. You have to make an agreement with the record company, just like it's not enough for the record company to say "release these songs now".

If you were an artist who had worked on something that you believed in, would you just hand it over to be released without any kind of agreement and how it was handled?

Here's another quote from Jarmo. So if you want to take it at face value, we have waited 5 years because they can't "agree" on the details of a release. He can make all the comments he wants about "so-called" fans, but seriously. FIVE. FUCKING. YEARS.

Record companies are well known for screwing people over. But they are also in the record business. You have a company that can make money by releasing an album that is in theory already completed. You have a band who in theory have songs ready to release. Both sides have released albums before, and know what is involved. The CD release was botched on all sides. But surely over the course of five years, both sides would be able to make a few concessions, and figure out how to promote and release an album. The only possible thing that could take that long to resolve, is if one side wants a much larger number of briefcases filled with cash than the other is prepared to offer. In this scenario, in terms of who is being more or less reasonable, one side releases hundreds of albums a year. The other side never releases anything at all.

we download like motherfuckers then spend all our money on music anyway. if they put out a deluxe we'd buy it. but yeah hard to say how many would. with the pop bands they buy every piece of shit bieber puts out for a limited time. i guess it's possible GNR has lost that core audience who would buy anything. those people would turn out for an AFD special edition though.

so actually for GNR, Axl a leak is more profit for them as it could promo a tour a bit.

basically a GNR album which only semi sucks will make 30 mil for the label. this bonus alt version collection would prob sell 3 mil world wide.

I think maybe that although we take for granted GNR sales, the label might have to do certain things, get GNR touring, or some sort of statergy, timing. they really saw some sort of interest in CD in the end. Which maybe they don't feel is there right now. maybe in a few years of nothing it will return.

Either way they don't care. Axl is not an artist they need to rely on in order to turn a profit anymore. And given Axl's disappearing act last time I would say they aren't in a rush to release another GNR album anytime soon.

No, not really. Unless it was released as a single and with a proper video and marketing, a person isn't going to buy a whole album for just one song. And let's be honest, people on forums like this are kind of "fanatic", but the general audience doesn't even know a couple of songs were leaked.

Would Love to hear Axl singing lead! who is leaking this stuff and why is Tommy on lead and Axl on background? Is this a Tommy solo record? Did Axl write the song and get Tommy to demo it? It's just if this was a song intended for a Gnr record then surely Axl would be singing on it!

But CD had no video... i just wonder if could have used GD on a deluxe album and sold a few more copies or something.

Why record new versions of Silkworms and Oh My God if not to put them out. Same with GD, why wait til it leaks.
