Maybe Axl's been trolling people for 30 years for his own entertainment. Seriously, why would you change your name to the name of your band instead of the other way around? Making people wait for concerts. Outrageous demands. Maybe the audience is there (as Kurt Cobain used to say) to entertain the performer. Could he be trolling people for 25 years? But being Bill or William still bothers him because his family was crap, including his biological father. And he hated everything about his hometown and the kind of life he had growing up. So yeah, he was once in this band Axl. So he took that name. He wanted a new identity. Kinda like being born again. He was having a new life in L.A. I don't know if he's the one who came up with it, and even if it was, I don't think he had the intention of using it as his name, rather than just as his current band name.
