Which show did Axl play guitar in "dead horse" MV ?

Recommended Posts

Same tour, just different guitar so not the same from the music video.

The shots from the music video are from a professional camera. We won't have access to that show where they cut video from but it's a good reminder that everything was filmed in really high quality during the whole Illusions tour. The Dead Horse music video has some really cool stage video and great rehearsing video of Axl. Easily my favorite of all the music videos.

This, although I do like the handful of versions from 1991 where Slash and Izzy would play the intro in tandem on electric guitars with Slash doing the power chords and Izzy doubling that in a higher register. Slash always had some tasteful leads while they'd jam the intro as well, and the same is true for the 1993 versions.

It's also worth noting that Slash does the intro acoustic track on the studio version. Axl only did it live in 1993 and even simplified it a bit - no doubt to make it easier based on his guitar skills and having to sing over it.

I like the '91 performances also. Although the Use Your Illusion 1 liner notes says Axl plays the acoustic guitar on the studio version as well.

Axl wrote that intro on acoustic though right?

Something like that, but I swear the booklet just credits Slash for the acoustic guitars but maybe my memory is just failing me on that as someone noted above that it credits Axl. I'd have to double check.

Nothing official but I looked it up and "The composition starts out with an acoustic section, which features a guitar riff written by lead vocalist Axl Rose."

Wikipedia on the song

I also remember Slash calling Axl the most talented all around musician in the band. He said he has great guitar skills.

But Axl said he sucks at playing guitar. Axl is brutally honest and brutally sucks. Still came up with One In A Million and Dead Horse on guitar. That's impressive, but the man can't play guitar. Decent piano player though. Has a great ear for melody as well.

I know he wrote some guitar parts for There Was A Time, lead and rhythm if I'm not mistaken. And he constructed Catcher's demo solo with Caram. He calls guitar playing "the art of guitar". I think he lacks the technical ability to be a good guitar player, but he can come up with guitar ideas that, with help from others, can turn into great songs.

So it's probably in between - Axl wrote it but Slash plays it on the album version. The version on the album has a lot of variations that Axl never did live so that was probably some Slash embellishment.

Axl plays it on the album. Check the liner notes. Probably more variation on there because he wasnt singing at the same time. Slash plays clean electric over acoustic right before the "then when she said she was gonna like wreck my car..." bit.

"[Axl's guitar playing] tripped me out when I first came back,' Slash says. 'I figured 'Okay, that's where his focus has been. I haven't really talked to him about it, to tell the truth. I guess he's just been sitting at home, figuring out chords or something. Maybe he's been taking lessons." (Slash, Total Guitar, 01/97)

"Axl is rhythm guitar on his own songs for the time being." (Slash chat, 07/30/96)

"For the last couple of years, [Axl] started to go, 'Okay, I'm going to play guitar and actually learn what these notes are.' It's an innocent guitar, not unlike Izzy (Stradlin, ex-GN'R guitarist) was, but Axl's got a lot more musically than Izzy ever did.'" (Duff, Addicted to Noise, 08/30/96)

"Right now, Axl's playing [rhythm] guitar and it's like he plays that instrument for ten years." (Matt, 09/23/96)

Awesome! I've been looking for these quotes for a long time! It's been a while since I remember reading it, but it always stuck with me how impressed everyone was by Axl's ability to learn a new instrument.

The whole band is incredibly talented. But I think Axl takes it to another level when he's obsessed with something.

It makes me wonder how much of CD's guitar work was composed by Axl. I don't think Axl is the simplistic player who only knows 2 chords like he did back in 1988. I mean for Duff - when sober - to compare Axl's playing with Izzy's in terms of quality - says something.
