None of the states in the Middle East existed before WWI and their border more or less correspond to the pre-existing British and French protectorates. Nations and national identities are products of the modern era and it's still an ongoing process, with either a national movement leading to the establishment of a nation-state/country or or the establishment of the nation state creates the national identity (the case of most existing middle-eastern countries).
