DT Jason McMaster talks about Axl Rose, CD and GnR

Recommended Posts

I didn't know you had a website, Groghan. Good luck with whatever project you're involved in.

Thanks man, I appreciate it.

I love that era of music, and I enjoy writing - so that's where the website started. It's fun, it pays for itself, and I get to chat with musicians that I idolized growing up.

Music and appreciation of different kinds and styles of music is supposed to be fun. I've gotten some great feedback from people, so that's been pretty cool. Lots of music fans out there. We need to spread the love of music, not the constant negativity we see on a lot of the forums.

compared to the real Guns: CD failed, people! No need to try re-writing music history!

What point are you trying to make?

You think CD was a failure, many people don't.

But what does your statement have to do with this topic? McMaster thinks GnR was great, thinks Axl sounded great on CD and he enjoyed the album. And he thinks Civil War is a great song. Your comments really have NOTHING to do with this topic.

What he's saying makes sense, civil war is great, GNR were the best band in the world at that time.

The only reason CD didn't do so well is the shit marketing it never got but it's still a great album, just cos there's no $lash don't make it crap

He makes a great point about GNR spreading out what they could do musically, but it also applies to what Axl did with CD. It wasn't re-hashed it was fresh and something new. I'm not saying it's a successful formula and I don't think Jason is either. Honestly Civil War worked in terms of the success of the album it's on where as Chinese Democracy failed in the eyes if the public perception.

Both tried something different, and that in itself is admirable. It's not like a U2 song where they rehash the same formula over and over again. It works for them, but at the same time I have a lot less respect for U2's music. What Axl did with Chinese is much different than I expected but he didn't try to re do something that already been done. I respect that aspect of the album even though it's not my favorite from the Guns N Roses name.

I think the evolution of the sound of Guns N Roses music is why many consider them the last great rock band. It wasn't a gimmick. Those guys were just badass musicians.

Has nothing to do with no "$lash".. So fucking clever by the way. Or Izzy, Duff or Steven for that matter.. I personally thought most of it was like listening to nails going down a chalkboard but some people do like it. (I have yet to actually meet one in person). Whether you like it or not, it just wasn't a good Guns N' Roses record and a poor choice to release it as one.

I actually checked out your website one Groghan, it looks pretty cool. I've been meaning to talk to you about it.

Cool, thanks.

I'm no expert by any means, so if you see something you think is wrong or that I should change - feel free to PM me.

I recently interviewed Dangerous Toys lead singer Jason McMaster for my music website http://www.hairmetalmusic.com.

Ohh.... so that's your site?

This GN'R world is so small...

Good to find out.

No kidding.

I try and be really positive on there, and obviously I give GnR a TON of credit and praise - more so than any other band. The only band I really bash is Winger! But I'm still expecting to get some hate mail one day from somebody telling me how evil I'm being!!!!

If you see something you don't like or think looks bad - PM me!

Do you run the site all by yourself, or is it a few different people? How do you determine your lists? I actually like most of your picks. Why don't you include Van Halen, Aersomith, and AC/DC? What made you decide to create your own site? Is it or was it time consuming? Just curious, looks great man.

Opinions are like ass holes, everyone's got one, IMO cd is great, just a lot of old school gnr fans won't have it cos of who and who's not on the record

Like you said, everyone has got one. IMO the album sucked and it had no difference who was in the band at the time. I don't think it should have been called Guns N' Roses due to the lineup but that has no bearing on the quality of the music. If I thought it was good I would say it. I was waiting for the album to come out like everyone else. I went out and bought me a Josh Freeze album, a Buckethead album.. Was watching along with everyone online that first Vegas show back. Loved the 3 new songs I had on my Rock In Rio bootleg. Bought End Of Days for Oh My God...

The finished product just ended up being awful. And the studio versions of The Blues, Maddy and CD just weren't as good as the live versions I had heard.

Of course everyone has opinions but it's hard to take yours seriously when you write $lash. I gotta guess that you weren't born during the bands prime when you diss Slash like that. It's actually more embarrassing if you were an adult then who now thinks that making fun of Slash or any other members of the true GN'R will somehow make them a bigger fan or get themselves in Team Brazil's good graces for Party Passes

Anyway I remember first reading about DT in Metal Edge magazine many years ago.I feel old just hearing that name again and knowing who they are.

Do you know pal, I was in my 20's when gnr were massive in the early 90's , for me slash is brilliant but sucks the medias balls too much. You seem like one of these who possibly bum slash and diss Axl a bit maybe ? Your opinion is wrong IMO !

Slash sucks the medias balls too much? Broham in case you don't know he's a PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN and has been for over 25 years. It's part of the gig to sell yourself and your product.

Yeah he does, he's up the medias ass way too much, you must think I was born yesterday and know nothing about him n this band. All bands need to promote them selves, gnr don't and slash does too much

Guys, can we not turn this into a Slash -vs- Axl fight?

This topic wasn't meant to solve that 20 year debate.

Jason McMaster, lead singer of Dangerous Toys, Watch Tower, Broken Teeth, had some pretty nice things to say about Axl, GnR and CD in an interview. I thought people might be interested to hear since McMaster has made a living in the hard rock business and he has a ton of respect for Axl and GnR.

This topic should be really positive. No need for negativity!!!

Thanks :headbang:

Just me.

Just what I personally like. That's the beauty of it!!!

I had to draw a line somewhere, and it mainly centered around bands I loved in the late 80s and early 09s. VH and Aerosmith never really did the poofy hair and make-up thing, and AC/DC was a pure hard rock band. VH, Aero and Kiss were right on the bubble though.

Enjoy writing, love hair metal music and joined a club that teaches you how to build and run a website.

Very time consuming. If somebody had the will power and time, you can make a living just by operating a few websites. If you are willing to put in a full eight hour day you could easily make 40,000-to-50,000 per year. But with a full time job and two babies, I don't have the actual "time" to put in enough time to do it as a living. I put in maybe two hours a week at it now. I wish I could do it full time. It's fun. Talking to musicians that I looked up to as a teen/young adult has been pretty cool. Adrian Campbell refused an interview request. I sent twitter/FB messages to Duff and Dizzy - got no response. But I've got a couple other interviews in the can with a couple singers from the era that will run soon.

Thanks!

Jason Macmaster is a great vocalist, I love the first 3 Dangerous Toys albums.

For those that say CD was a failure, There was no way in 2008 that CD was going to sell 10 million copies.

Back in 87-94 anyone could have one good song and a video for it and sell 1-3 million copies, it didn't matter is the rest of the album was shit as long as that one song was on there.

So it is unfair to compare albums sales from the 87-94 GNR era to CD release in 2008.

Back then you didn't have hardly any leaked tracks and you had to buy a cd because you just couldn't burn one, yes you could make a cassette copy but with CD's being so new everyone wanted it on CD.

In 2008 basically the whole album leaked before it was released and was downloaded like crazy.

CD did sell what around 3 million copies, it may be less or more but my point is other huge bands are in that same boat take Metallica they will only sell 4-5 million copies and that is a far cry from the late 80's and early 90's

Do I think CD was a failure no because I liked it, I will consed that it did fall short on what it could have sold, but that being at the end of the day I am a fan and I like CD. I though CD was sell around the 4-5 million mark.
