Monroe, perhaps the most interesting character associated with hair metal, lived with the Dead Boys' Stiv Bators in the early 80s, and along with Slash, doubtless introduced Axl-- never known for his musical acumen-- to this, if not all of the punk material they butchered.
It's amazing how the guy used "doubtless" for something that is absolutely false. Slash always said that Fear was one of the few punk rock bands he dug. The rest came mostly from Duff. And the comment about Axl's musical acumen is either ignorance or bad faith.

It makes no sense for them to re-record parts of a song that are identical to what where already in the original recording. It would however make sense for them to let someone re-mix the track in a more commercial way.
Fair enough, but if it was like that I think Frank would have simply confirmed "no rerecording" when directly asked in an interview. Instead, he just stuttered and mumbled, which is quite revealing in a way. That's possibly the biggest indication that some overdubs might have been recorded.

CD is perfect as is. Slash and Duff can rework whichever leftovers there are in the can.

That actually started off pretty well, the bit with him recounting bartender school and his first night bartending at Slug's during a Charles Mingus concert made super happy, as I love this kind of anecdotes (and your podcast always offer a lot of this content). The little part speaking about harmonica was pretty cool as well. Then he seemed to completely lose the thread (and get sidetracked) when the documentary became the topic. It took super off guard me as a viewer, I can only imagine how difficult must have been for you as a host. You handled it very good I must say, great job!

Another great interview Brando. I love some of Jennifer's solo stuff too so I really enjoyed watching this. Had no idea about the love letter from Buckethead and that was really something 😂😁

Honestly, I don't think the real problem is the cut and paste approach.
Chinese Democracy had layers and layers of cut and paste from different sessions, different musicians and different producers, yet sound wise is not bad at all considering how it was produced. What makes a very big difference is the mastering, as they went for full dynamics on CD while they are using a lot of compression on HS and Absurd.
From previous articles and reports, it was said that a loud, compressed mix of CD was also proposed by Bob Ludwig to Axl, but Axl liked the full dynamics version more and decided to go with it. Ludwig explained it himself in this old article here: https://web.archive.org/web/20090131045144/http://www.gatewaymastering.com/gateway_LoudnessWars.asp
QuoteThe trial disc I submitted to the producers had 3 versions: The one I personally liked had no compression that was used just for loudness, only compression that was needed for great sounding rock and roll. Then, knowing how competitive everything is these days, I made two more masterings, one with more compression and another with yet more compression, but even the loudest one wasn’t remotely as loud as some recent CDs. Hoping that at least one of these would satisfy Axl and Caram Costanzo, the co-producers of the record, I was floored when I heard they decided to go with my full dynamics version and the loudness-for-loudness-sake versions be damned.
I think the fan and press backlash against the recent heavily compressed recordings finally set the context for someone to take a stand and return to putting music and dynamics above sheer level.
Regarding why HS and Absurd sound quite bad, Ludwig himself seems to offer a possible explanation in hindsight through that same article:
Quotewhen I first heard some of final mixes which were incredibly multi-layered and dense, I was surprised by two things: The mixes were so finally honed that doing the smallest move sounded like I had done a lot and also that adding the typical amount of compression used in mastering these days took the life and musicality out of the recordings in a big way.
Looks like the compression used for HS and Absurd triggered exactly what Ludwig described here.
I can't help but wonder what spurred Axl to change his mind about this and go for such a u-turn.

OMG was on the alternates list for a few June 2018 shows.
This would make the choice less absurd than Absurd (which just appeared out of the blue on a setlist after some 20 years and got played only a few days later) 😯

I'd be willing to bet that it doesn't sound like a 20 year old throw off song that's over produced and had even more layers added to it.
I don't really like the song, they're just rehashing their usual stuff, but then again RHCP lost me when By The Way came out. I know I'm the minority on this and I don't want to argue whether it's a good song or not, because that's not the point. Many likes it and I get it.
The point is that it was promoted in a certain way, as simple as that. GNR could have certainly generated a bigger buzz if their new music was promoted with a real video (I saw the RHCP video at least twice on my usual music channel yesterday here in Italy), some interviews or tv appearances. Have you seen Slash, Myles & Co. playing Rocket Man at Stern's? Think if GNR went to a relevant show, played their new single and an Elton cover. Now that would create some buzz.
Of course, none of that sounds likely. Half assed management? Sure. But if the band (well, Axl) was really interested in any of that, they would certainly ask Fernando or whoever is in charge to do something. It's safe to assume that the management is handling things this way because the band is ok with it. And if they're happy with it, more power to them.
Not trying to justify them because I honestly couldn't care less, just trying to say that their promotion or lack thereof is probably not only due to management ineptitude but also a specific choice. As poor and questionable as you want, but a choice.
I hope we'll get more music and I'll be crazy happy if they happen to do a good interview. That's always been the key with this band: hope, don't expect.

With nothing to lose, I actually tried a big question. Not holding my breath to get an answer, of course, but I tried:
QuoteYou recently mentioned having been working on some of the songs that Axl had laying around. Any chance older GNR unreleased ideas from, let's say, 1996 or so (before you originally left the band) will be brought (or have been brought) to the table to be finished?

I would be happy with a new in-depth interview from Axl almost as much as I would be happy with new GNR music, really.

I thought so. Also, sometimes I'm just curious about where the working titles come from. I mean, Smells Like Josh Spirit is a quite obvious reference to the riff and the drums of the song. D Tune and Quicksong are typical working titles. But titles like Me & My Elvis or Three Dollar Pyramid? That would be fun to know. If Mustache was a slow, sabbath-like riff I would have thought the name was coming from Iommi and Geezer, lol.
-
'Me & My Elvis' is one of my favorite tunes from the leaks.
Other than the Elvis reference in the title, do we have any other hints (not saying "confirmation" because I don't think we have one) that this song and the one Axl referred to as 'Leave Me Alone'/'Elvis Presley And The Monster Of Soul'/'Soul Monster' might actually be the same song?

Thank you Brando, just listened to it and I enjoyed it a lot. He shared some very very nice stories. Wonder if his memories of Atlas stemming from a Howerdel idea are correct, as I would have expected something more electronic oriented coming from him tweaking with Logic. But Sean seems to remember the song fairly well, even recalling the recording session for the vocals, so he might be really correct.
On a side note, when he said something along the lines "while Billy was making some sounds with Logic, Axl sometimes would stop him to record bits of vocals on whatever he was playing" , my mind ran to Nothing, as it really fits the description. I think that might really be a tune that came up this way.

Regarding Catcher, to me the problem is not just the solo, it's also that additional guitar in the intro, I can't stand it. Overall, I like the song. It's the only one from Chinese where I prefer the demo version over the released one (unpopular opinion, as many seems to prefer the demos generally speaking, but still).
-
Same here. I kept adding Melissa to the band line-up on their wiki page and someone kept "demoting" her as "touring/session musician", leaving just the other six as official band members. I kept insisting and adding sources until it was accepted for good.

My guess is going forward if they put the writing credits down it'll just be listed as "Guns n' Roses"
Yep, sounds likely, but I'm a sucker for credits and I hope, if/when we get an album (and please let's not spin this into "we're never getting an album etc etc"), at least the musicians credits will be UYI or CD style, ie with detailed credits for each song listing who played what.

The "New Album" Thread . The maybe, possibly, at some point, soon, whenever, wtf Axl thread🤞

As far as I remember, and unless I'm mixing this up with a different interview, it was an article in Portuguese from a Brazilian newspaper and I'm pretty sure the year was 2001, maybe around the time of RIR. It was interesting because there was mentioning if a "second" album long before CD came actually out.
Also, I think it's the only known mention of PRL as a title before the village leaks.
I think a scan of the newspaper was circulating too, I have vague memories of that. @Blackstar and @SoulMonster hopefully can confirm or add details.
Edit: in Portuguese/brazilian newspaper
