  1. I would be completely at ease if the band released a hybrid album of old and new material like van halen did with a different kind of truth.

I would accept if the band publically said they just want to be a touring band, play the hits a few deep cuts get rid of the covers and tour every year or two to allow slash to focus on his solo stuff. Once SMKC finishes an album/tour cycle back to GNR touring.

One would think its a waste if GNR dont release new music and i get that, but with axl at 60 i dont see his voice continuing past 65 for another 3 or 4 year tour.

Considering slash has said he would like GNR to be an album/tour/album/tour cycle band i feel they have one album left.

Not that I have heard.  I kind of wonder if this is going to be another "30th anniversary" boxset that comes a year or more after the fact.

    Such a fuckup alround.

Was it the band or record company that dropped the ball on the LnL boxset?.

I'm sorry, but that theory that COVID preveted the band from release something doesn't make any sense. There's a ton of new music being released since March from a lot of artists, but then again people would say "why release something if they're not gonna be able to tour?", well GNR only properly toured ChiDem in 2010, after two years of it being released.

My theory is, since all those songs leaked: Atlas, Perhaps, Hardschool, there's no other "new" songs, and why bother to release something that's already out there and for free? Maybe they have "The General" and two / three other "finished" songs that are unheard yet.

The point is: they don't have a new record, Slash is releasing a new record in 2021 and is going to tour it. Forget it, let it go, there's nothing out there.

Didnt fernando say in one his reddit chats, that the if the band release new music they want to tour it?.

Good point, yeah. The “honeymoon” phase is over.

At this point id be happy with the UYI box and/or NITL bluray.

Im more looking forward to the illusions anniversary material than new music.

It's catchy-hooked driven melodies over easy-going guitar arrangements.  I don't think anyone would argue he's a musical genius.

For me, sometimes it's more impressive writing a great catchy tune with little production than an elaborate, over the top composition with a complex chord progression.  If you look at some of the most iconic songs in rock/pop, many are pretty simple.  Some are accompanied by little to no arrangement (Steve Wonder's "I Just Called" and Otis Redding's "Sitting at the Dock of the Bay" come to mind).

I find Johnson's ability to string along a melody is striking.  It's not an easy thing to do, let alone consistently like Johnson did through the 2000s (he kind of lost it in the 2010s).

    To each their own.

Appreciate the response. 👍. Each their own.

To each their own, but the last thing I’d want to blast on what I can only assume is a tropical island is a heavy metal album.

Here are the albums I would choose that match the environment:

Beach Boys - Greatest Hits (I grew up to the GH collection; not super familiar with individual albums)

Jack Johnson - On and On

    Bob Marley - Greatest Hits

    U2 - The Joshua Tree

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats - Self Titled

If there was a winter season my bonus album would be:

    Fleet Foxes - self titled

I know all music taste are subjective, I personally cant stand jack johnsons music. Would have to be the most overrated muscian of the last 20 years. How he has the sort of success from strumming 3 chords on an acoustic guitar ill never understand.

I haven’t listened to this clip yet - one song is enough to tide me over until the album drops. That said, SITD is a pretty stereotypical AC/DC lead single. They’ve stuck to mid tempo, bluesy lead singles since Ballbreaker (Hard As A Rock, Stiff Upper Lip, Rock N Roll Train, Play Ball), and SITD very much fits that mold.

    Pretty much this.

What music, they didn't make any...or in fact play much.

I was never saying money shouldn't be a concern or people shouldn't be paid when they play, I just don't think anyone with an once of self esteem would care to be Axls monkey boy, sign over the rights of the band and put up with his girlish hysterical behaviour, which Izzy didn't.  Come to that I don't even really hold it against the rest of the band for being, whether they were or not, greedy.  I'm just pointing it out as an apparent fact.

No ones asking him to make art, just sing those already recorded and well practised songs.

Well he's not an artist, he's the singer in a rock band.  A late 80s, highly derivative popular rock band who, once upon a time, people liked to hear sing.  Lets not lay it on like this is Beethoven agonizing over symphonies whilst slowly going death.

I have no issue with bands like the stones being greedy in terms of how they generate money as long as they give a bang for buck show and still consider themselves artists and release new music.

I understand why someone like jagger is $$ hungry, compared to when they started and signed shit contracts because they didnt understand the contract and made not much money in the 60s and 70s because of the contracts.

But i mean with other bands you actually see some kinda brotherhood, bands like The Beatles, The Clash, The Stones to a point, they actually had some serious bond, looked out for each other, had each others back, Duff goes on a lot about the band of brothers thing but there’s almost no actual evidence of them ever being like that.  I mean it was right after Appetite went big that they kinda like...started sniping at each other, over artistic rights (which amounts to money really).  They were never even really in the studio together for a concerted period of time ever like all other great bands are/were.  They were kinda fated to fail and like, really, you get the impression that they only really stayed together post Appetite because there was so much money in it.

I agree with this to a point.

Alot of those bands during their formative year recorded together not only because of a brotherhood but the technology wasnt there to allow them to record at home or in 2 separate studios. Plus when the record companies paying for the studio time, bands obviously respected that, hence writing and recording together. Do you think mccartney wouldnt have said no to recording at home or in another studio if it meant not having to see yoko everyday?

By 1970 the band was done, as they started the beatles young and grew to being older men, and just went through their own inner emotional maturity changes. But that didnt stop them before the beatles broke up of sniping at each other all in the same studio and creating certain lyrics about one another!. If the technology developed more, and the beatles band stayed in tact, i think they certainly would not have recorded together.

But with this the 60s and 70s bands respected each individual member and what they brought to the band.

Did the pandemic destroy the band? Big things were apparently in the works for this year, potentially new music, maybe a few deep cuts played at the very least. All the dates were cancelled and I imagine the rescheduled ones will. A return to normalcy for the music industry is 2022 earliest experts say. Axl will be 60 by the time all this ends. Is this the final straw for an already nearing creatively bankrupt band? Will we see them again after all this? Will this be used as an excuse for the lack of music for the rest of the bands lifetime if they come back?

We have official confirmation, slash has been writing stuff for gnr and smkc.

We have official confirmation smkc will be releasing new music next year.

I have seen a post from another site that gnr have a single recorded and ready to be released at any time.

If the band is finished, its down to one member only.

Axl couldn't save his own band even if his life depended on it. Let alone releasing a new album.

I reckon there will be alot of bands looking to tour when touring can resume and will be a punters dream in terms of who to see that gnr will simply not ( they will try) and ask for the same ridiculous ticket prices of before without a major drawcard. It has to be supporting a new album. Hoping that means changing the setlist drastically.

I hate hate, the axl appearance stuff. But fuck. how much better does he look with his hair longer than the disaster he has at the moment. I'm gonna jump on the bandwagon. Axl please grow your hair, you look fucking ace!

    Grow back the porn tache.

The 12- 2014 with the long hair, porn tache and white hat , had a southern rock kind of  look, i thought it suited him. But it gave off the "career wind down mode" vibe.

Yeah, I dunno about the article.  Axl definitely did help them out in a bit of a tight spot though and helped rehab his own image a bit.  I think ACDC was always going to release a new album tho, whether with Axl or with Brian Johnson recovering.

Not that it was a great hope, but I thought if Axl went on to do an album with ACDC then it might help the chances of a GNR album just by virtue of Axl getting more positive press and whatnot.

Maybe the acdc, having some of the foo fighters play,  and billy joel jams, went a fair way of redeeming himself.

They're usually the same people who ask why new bands never get anywhere these days.

    Completely agree.

I always pay for new music especially new bands. Always happy to give money tk new bands.

The exception was CD when i ripped it from a torrent site when  it was released.

Sorry, what?! Do you mean purely in Oz or worldwide? Either are quite ridiculous suggestions!

Worldwide. If its a strong album, singles, stteaming, huge promo, they will tour it massively and generate shitloads*

*This will also depend upon one vocalists vocals being in good shape, and said vocalist being in shape themselves.

Absolutely...I was more taken aback personally about how horrific physical sales are now 😂. GNR will be one of the few who will churn out good numbers...just amazing how things have shifted from the ‘old days’ where UYI combined has sold something around 30m copies!

Random thought - do we know how many copies CD actually sold or is that number lost in what was shipped to Best Buy etc?

Yeah its a shame how shit the music industry is nowdays.

It’s funny - I posted on another thread that only Taylor Swift in 2019 and 2020 has shifted over a million physical copies of an album. I knew physical sales were down but that’s horrific!!

Now - GNR are a different demographic in that most of us probably still favour the physical copy....but even I was horrified at those facts. GNR would push good numbers of course but less than I imagined!

I doubt the record company would be worried to much about how many copies an album will sell. In terms of SMKC any release here in Aus sell well. SKMC AL album went platninum here. I have no doubt the album will get into the top5 with a strong first single. But the band will make a shitload of money touring it, potentially more than NITL has grossed. I think any money they dont make in album sales they will certainly make up for it in touring and merchandise.

I think many of us fans prefer the skin and bones tour in 93 to the gandure of the Illusions tour, with the stripped back lineup and an audible Gilby. Interesting to think that we mainly got that so Axl could maintain the grandure in his private life, lol.

Ive heard other posters on the forum be skeptical about the goodwill intentions of the separate releases being a favour to the fans (in that case the band said it was so kids could afford at least one album). And also Ive heard it said (I think by the band or Goldstein) that they wanted to get everything out becasue they didnt think the band would last. But Im not sure. This really goes to my point that to every 'point' there is a 'counterpoint' and both can be factually true. Like maybe They were being fan friendly and were worried about breaking up?

I could go for a what if live action film, but in a comic book universe, of the CD era. CD comes out in 99 and is a trilogy released over the 2000s. The drama between Bucket and Finck. It could be good!

I feel there was good will of the band releasing 2 albums. I hadnt heard about the goldstein comment. I do remember reading magazines around 91 when t he album came out where duff explained that the 2 albums was the bands way of cleaning the slate of old material which i get. There is youtube vids where axl is introducing newer illusion songs with t he early 91 shows, while complaining about Geffen taking ages to release the albums and making the fans wait. I feel there was fan friendliness at that stage as the band were still young and still were able to look through younger fans eyes, which seems to be non existent now. We know that from fernandos responses on his reddit chats .

Ive never seen a more management person that creates so much angst amongst the fan base.

Will be interesting how much the band promote tickets for when shows start again. I personally think if theree is no promotion for any new release as part of new touring the band are really going to struggle with ticket sales.
