Lithium
I don't really see how people enjoy watching this stuff. I mean, it was cool when I was 13 or 14, but after a while I realized that it doesn't really demand a lot from the film-makers to create some sort of shock effect, and thus it stopped being fascinating to me. If you want shock just for shock.... look at a shock videoDisturbing films offer so much moreI don't see how. There is rarely any cinematic quality to be seen in them. supercool
Well, Pasolini said that Salò wasn't really inspired by the fascist era. It was more about the present society.Presciently, Pasolini warned that television generated both demand and need, and existed primarily to create visual excrement. Specifically, Pasolini noted that globalized economic power and cultural domination were the products of televisual culture. Salò was his response to that.He described the coprophagia scenes in Salò as a comment on the processed food industry (industrial food=shit). He often described consumeristic culture as "unreal", as it had been imposed by economic power and had replaced Italy's traditional peasant culture, something that not even fascism had been able to do. In one interview, he said: "I hate with particular vehemency the current power, the power of 1975, which is a power that manipulates bodies in a horrible way; a manipulation that has nothing to envy to that performed by Himmler or Hitler."" I have done a film called Salo, in which one sees terrible things, which in reality, taken one at a time, would be pornography, taken out of context; but in context I believe that they are not, because the context is that of the commodification which power has made of bodies, that is the reduction of bodies to things. "In my opinion, Salò is a masterpiece, really a great movie.yep, good post.

But even with that interpretation which would make the movie to make sense, I still think it wasn't a masterpiece at all. It's pretty plain, they could change the order of some sequences and the film would still make the same sense. Except the begining, when they get the kids, and the final part, the rest is always the same. It doesn't have that something. I don't know, it's a matter of taste, but it was disappointing to me. I think one if it's key aspects is the fact that between the beginning and the end it is sort of relentlessly involved with the total fuckin' immorality going on, it's sort of where a lot of the power of the movie lies, it's so unforgiving. Facekicker
I once saw a movie about talking dogs and cats and it freaked me out for weeks. I refuse to undress in front of my dog to this day in case he suddenly says something awkward. Horrible movie.

AxlsAngel
I don't think I've ever watched any movies like described in op, thank God! Probably one of the most disturbing to me was "Fire in the Sky" (1993). I watched it alone at night and that wasn't such a good idea... freaked me out a little. Edit: I take that back... I do remember watching a movie called "Make Them Die Slowly" when I was a teen... that was disturbing enough for me thanks. T.wa.T
Never watched many shock movies, but the one scene that always comes to mind is, the rape scene in the beginning of, The Entity. Some lady gets raped up the walls by the Devil, who is invisible. It gets bloody and the actress did a convincing job, at least when I was 13 she was. It's supposed to be based on a true story from 1974. I've watched so much horror and paranormal stuff since then, it probably wouldn't even faze me now though. I only saw it the one time and that was way back in the eighties, Id probably laugh a little if I saw it now, I don't mean that in bad way, but at the time it was freaky. Don't really know many people who have seen the movie either and I honestly only remember the beginning.

Zint
Based on the titles suggested so far, I think the line between shocking and disturbing is easily blurred. The Exorcist very much does belong on a list of films that are disturbing. To add to the list, my nephew is here for a visit and last night, with a sly grin, he slaps down a movie in front of me that he insists we watch after some 420.Ok, so...the cover looks greasy as hell, I'm in.It was called "The Sinful Dwarf". Grimey film man, wow.Smacked out, naked chicks locked in an attic room in a boarding house for financial gain and fodder for local pervs....and a dwarf (with a cane).I'll leave it at that, but yeah...I wouldn't say it was shocking so much, but it qualifies for this thread. DieselDaisy
I cannot be bothered to go through the list but me and my mate went through the 'video nasty' phrase. We had a dodgy guy who sold them on VHS. So Cannibal Holocaust, Cannibal Ferox, I Spit on Your Grave, Snuff, Driller Killer - they were some of the ones we watched. Also, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exorcist and Natural Born Killers which - believe it or not - were banned in Britain so you can include them on the list of things we watched. In more recent years I have found the Japanese film Audition to be disturbing.
