Collectors..........how come?

In one topic today, somebody said they purchased six copies of CD (in various forms). In the Axl baseball card topic, somebody said they paid $250 for an Axl baseball card.

Axl collectors........just curious as to how come you do all this? Not trying to be rude and hoping this topic doesn't turn into anybody arguing or fighting. I just can't imagine spending $100 for copies of an album that I'm not going to listen to, but am going to hang on the wall or put away in a safe. Or paying $250 for a baseball card.

If Axl released a box set that had appetite redone, BBF's remix album, CD leftovers, acoustic album, new album by the new band, Illusions backstage footage, live concert DVD and Axl's autobiography..............I'd pay $350 for that today.

But $350 for a baseball card and five copies of a new album that I wasn't going to open and play..........just seems odd to me.

Collectors........what say you?

That's just what collector's do :shrugs:

I've got a couple grand worth of Ozzy stuff that just sits around for the most part and shirts I'll probably never wear, but there's just some drive that makes me keep wanting to buy stuff.

Pretty much this.

It's cool to have

To fill a void in one's life.

A poster, a CD; all of that is OK. But spending infinite amounts of money on trivial material things that detract from the real function of a band? No thank you.

This. It's not really something I can explain. My Maiden collection is mammoth - probably over 200 official vinyls (All sorts of alternate pressings, pic discs, etc. mixed in), close to 100 official CD's (Again, alternate pressings, especially Japanese first pressings), and nearly 100 concert shirts. Last month I spent $200 on a particularly rare vintage shirt from 1988. Why? It's a great collection piece, and it was a bargain price (I assume someone will make a remark about that price not being a bargain  ). Maiden do event shirts with special artwork for special gigs, I always have to have someone pick me up one from the gigs I'm not at. Why? Collection piece.

Collecting isn't for everybody. Some people love it, but I can see why others think it's insane :shrugs:

EDIT: Just for clarification - collecting has taken a serious backseat for me these last four years since I started the hardcore traveling. Other than event shirts (Which I factor into my budget), it's a big year if I add 5 items to my collection. There's the occasional rarity like that vintage shirt I just got - it's one of the holy grails of Maiden shirts and I knew if I didn't grab it then and there I'd be kicking myself over it forever.

People collect all kinds of stuff for various reasons. Reasons like sentimental values, estetics, hobby, money (buying/selling), obsessive compulsion, for fun.

Having a bunch of cool vinyl records framed to put up on a wall could look nice.

If you wonder why people collect things like music CDs and vinyls, you must also wonder why the artist bother having alot of artwork made for their music.

Always when I watch Pawn Stars I wonder how would it be if someone took there How Are You Grenade and Red Hand. Red Hand is so rare that the specialist would make an offer himself

I thought Grenade was rarer? Anyways, someone tried to sell Slash's DL once, so it wouldn't surprise me if a copy of ChiDem eventually wandered into Gold and Silver Pawn

You and Maiden lol. I love how enthusiastic you are about them. How do you find all these things?

Some of it on eBay, some of it through the Maiden Fan Club. You know no one is gonna try and rip you off on there ;)

I have all of the Guns albums on sealed Lps and also a bunch of promo/limited edition media as well. At first the obsession was driven by owning a rare Gun's Lp, etc. You know, the stuff that you used to see in the record store window, but was not for sale or you could never afford as a kid.

Now though, it is more about owning a piece of history. Some collect them due to their worth. I believe that value is kind of irrelevant though, as quite a bit of the Gun's stuff has remained stagnant in value since the mid 2000's. In saying that though, The true value of these collectables is in the eye of the beholder!

Collectors..........how come?

Because.

Hahaha. :D I think that's the one and only answer. Great, I totally love it.

I'm not a collector in the true sense of the word like metaforcesaber, but I do have a huge collection of the original VHS live shows and interviews which I recorded myself. I'm an over-zealous collector of the 80s-90s shows. And I kept all the old magazines and a hell of lot of the original photos which I bought from Robert John and George Chin and all the other photographers. I like to collect stuff I can use and read and look at. But a picture disc means nothing to me as the sound is no good so I have no use for it. Being a photographer myself though I'm an avid photo collector.

I do have 2 big photos signed by Axl which Robert John gave to me. Fine. Nice. I love them. But they have no emotional value for me as Axl didn't sign them in my presence.

I really do love vinyl versions of the records as the sound of a vinyl record is warmer and fuller than a cd's and I like the layout, but I wouldn't bend over backwards to get one.

I agree with that and you do alot of travel, however you end up with some real cool things that you don't have to "buy", setlists, picks, photos etc are memories that are personal to you and a way to remember each experience by. Too me those memories can leave a lasting impression.

Like someone else said - it's what collectors do. It doesn't make them any much more of a fan than someone who only has CDs. I don't collect things because I think they're going to be valuable someday, I collect because I enjoy it.

Exactly. It's the same for me. Call me silly, but I love to open this huge chest I have filled with Guns stuff and rummage through all the old magazines, or play the vinyl records and enjoy looking a the covers. I don't care a hang whether it's valuable stuff or not.

You're talking about what something is worth to somebody, and you're naming things you'd spend money on and how much you'd pay for them. Some people have the means to spend a lot on memorabilia, and sometimes that memorabilia winds up being worthless or worth ridiculous amounts of money.

If there was something from your childhood you lost or wish you had, wouldn't it be worth spending the money to have something you can enjoy and appreciate?

Someone might never have the chance to go up to all the members of GNR on AFD, but would pay the money to be able to have it and display it.

Some people never part ways with it, but I think at some point, usually for financial reasons and maybe not enjoying it as much anymore, they wind up parting ways with it and want to sell the whole thing off to someone who will take care of it, and won't piece it out on eBay. What's cool about that is it gets recirculated with a younger fanbase instead of being hoarded and when they die, the family could give a shit about it and send it off to Goodwill.

What really sucks is when you wind up in a situation where you stashed it away, and someone wound up selling it because they wanted cash to go party all weekend, or throwing it out because they didn't know what it was and didn't care. I had both of those things happen to me.

I'm a big believer of not taking it with you when you die. Sell it when it becomes valuable and spend the money on yourself and sell it to someone who's going to appreciate it.

I think theres something to having something unique and different that not everyone in the masses has. Same with autographs..kind of a unique way to seal the deal by having a personal connection of some sorts.

people will spend thier money on what they covet.. what they love and to they will go to great legnths to fullfill that passion.

BAck before the internet made them free -a Bootleg were something that definately set you apart. I can remember in 90 getting the bootleg of GNR when they opened for the Stones and Axl calling out band and defending One in A Million. My whole dorm floor loved that bootleg and we would always play it. Made me a rock star and I made some beer money by selling copies of it after the novelty had died off.

BAck in my late 20's and early 30's I went on a vintage Star Wars action figure collecting bing. I had kept all my Return of the Jedi action figures in the boxs .. i was insane about digging up action figures. I came across a small shop in Den Hauge Holland that had 50 of them and I made the ladies day by buy ing every single one of them... its a unique memory to look at them now and know where I got them.

Ive always thought it weird people buying some celebritys panties or underwear and other stuff like that..to me that seems out there... but getting things like albums that were misprinted, or released only to PR agencies really rare items like that ...I dig that stuff.
