(Unless you mean the Thermodorian Reaction/White Terror?). it's the conservatives that survive. the greatest common denominator always wins, everywhere radicals are more likely to blow themselves up. it's the radicals that are more violent, which increases the risk to die in conflict
DieselDaisy
It doesn't help when we support and arm tin pots. The CIA funded the anti-Soviet Mujahideen in the '80s from which the Taliban/Al Qaeda emerged. The West chucks money still today at the House of Saud which operates a brutal Wahhabi theocracy, and has in turn chucked petrolatum profits into Al Qaeda (including the September the 11th atrocity). Pakistan, who have also received US dollars, were almost certainly complicit in harbouring Bin Laden.

It's been awhile since I read The Looming Towers by Lawrence Wright, but I'm pretty sure the house of Saud had nothing to do with al Qaeda and Osam bin Laden. He was pretty much driven out of Saudi Arabia and was excommunicated by most, if not all, of his family.
