Duff Post About The Live Era Album

This was posted on Duff McKagan's Message Board:

Hey dudes! Yes, the live album is offically released on the 30th November here in the US. I did work quite a bit on it. It was great becasue I got to meet all the guys again. Slash was responsible for most of the work on the album. He and Axl worked the hardest. StevieIzzy and the others were all involved in one way or another.

A lot of people who habe heard the Live Era sampler are complaining that it sound too overproduced with extra sound added. Hmm. It is true that we added extra sound to make the songs sound better on record. But I would not call it 'overproduced'. It has ended up with a very smooth, clean sound even to Axl's vocals but we were just trying to make the album as good as we could.

That is why it doesn't actually say what shows the songs come from on the album. Loads of bands do it. Checkout Aerosmith's 'A Little South of Sanity', Cheap Trick's 'Live At Budokan' or any Kiss live album and they have all been tampered with. Otherwise, it would sound like a bootleg.

Se ya, November 30th, in your living room.

Thank you! We didn't have this in our archive. I think  this is the first quote I have where they refer to the overdubs they did on Live Era. Really great to have.

It's basically confirmation it's true lol. There's a lot buried on the wayback machine that people either forgot about or never knew

It looks like there's probably quite a bit on here that you guys may not have for your site. Ive got a lot of reading to do tonight... https://web.archive.org/web/19990508060451/http://www.duff-mckagan.com/news.html

DM: We started going to Slash's house. I'd gone out on the road promoting my first solo record [1993's Believe In Me]. I was touring Europe and Japan, then I got sick. That's when I started visiting Slash at his house. He has a little studio there and we had a batch of songs. But ya' know what? Without Izzy, we just weren't writing the old way. We had a bunch of great songs, but the way we used to write wasn't all sitting in a room and trying to force ourselves to be a family. We just were But there was a point up there where it was looking good and we started cranking out songs, but it just started falling apart.

MG: Now Slash isn't even involved. Neither are you and Izzy. What's gonna run through your mind when you see and hear Axl up there fronting "Guns N' Roses" again?

DM: Aah, I don't know. I can't answer that until it happens. I mean, it really isn't part of my life anymore so I don't think about it that much. Of course, it was a huge part of my life. I gotta admit, it was a magical time. [speaking softly] We really were an amazing band. The electricity in the room when we rehearsed was incredible. You could feel it! You can't match what we had. I love a lot of different music, and the guys Axl's got playing now are great guys, I know them all, but it's not Guns. Commercially, I think that's where it's going, that's the reason. What a shame. You and I can talk and remember the Beacon gig, or the Ritz gig, and say it was good. It was amazing, but big business rules all. I have to look at it now with that sort of cold eye. That's what it is and that's the way it goes. I've got to move on and I'm happy the way I am. I am so glad I'm not there. Axl's a good guy, but we tried and it just didn't happen. The timing wasn't right.

Thanks. I've been doing some digging up via web.archive myself. From a look I had on Duff's old site, we seem to have the stuff that's from external sources, including this interview.

But I found some articles we don't have on this site: https://web.archive.org/web/20140831110755/http://home.swipnet.se/~w-52838/gnfnrs1.html

Thanks.I think I may have seen that one before, it does look familiar.

This site has been useful https://web.archive.org/web/20011225035411fw_/http://illusions.freehosting.net/maynews.html

For example it looks like Axl in 1999 was in talks to do music for a film, this is the same year as "Daddy can the devil do mommy & me" for EOD

"Heavy Metal" Sequel Soundtrack Nabs Monster Magnet, Zombie, And Axl?

The legendary animated feature "Heavy Metal," which spawned one of the most revered soundtracks of the AOR era, is being followed up with what looks to be a worthy successor. "Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. 2," produced by Kevin Eastman, is about to wrap up production and should be out later this year.
Music supervisor Bruce Berman confirms that he is in talks with Axl Rose to include a new Guns N' Roses song in the movie, although it's not expected to appear on the soundtrack album. A source close to Rose says the singer is into the project, but he may or may not be able to work out a schedule that will allow him to participate.

The cartoon style is very close to the video they played at the start of the HOB show its probably not a coincidence

Yeah, it's the same one you found the Duff posting about Live Era on.

We have that about the soundtrack, too. Here's the articles we have for 1999:

so this means axl and slash did communicate and worked together on the album?

I believe Del james was a go between probably among others. I doubt Slash or Axl comunicated directly.

However the way Duff worded this suggests he may have met Axl over it possibly.

I like Live Era as a "Remix" Album and it sounds very good. But i never had a "live feeling"

Since Las Vegas 1992 got his release i enjoy it alot. Finally a proper live release with Ritz 1991 and now 1 hour of London 1991. It feels live. Live needs upfucks and mistakes and dirty vocals.

I don't really understand re-recordings of Live Recordings... and we talking about Guns N' Roses in their peak.

Live albums are always “touched up.” In some cases the touching up is minimal, but in other cases it’s extreme (Kiss Alive, GnR Live Era, etc.).

I recall a Duff interview from 2000 where he said he spoke to Axl on the phone a few weeks prior but that it was a little awkward. Sound like Axl and Duff were still in touch from 1997-2000 and may have seen each other every now and then during that time. Duff’s departure was not as ugly as the others.
