Appetite for Distortion - Ep. 93 - Danko Jones

Recommended Posts

Danko Jones, the man and the band, have been rocking since 1996. From garage rock beginnings in Toronto, to touring 10 countries with Guns N' Roses...from Axl inviting Danko on-stage to perform with GNR, to Duff writing the forward to Danko's book, this is an interview you don't want to miss!

Guest co-host for this episode is AFD Show listener, Alex from Michigan. In the "Shotgun News" segment, we discussed former GNR manager Doug Goldstein's tweet to current manager, Fernando. However, after this episode was recorded, OTHER former GNR manager Alan Niven responded to Doug. THAT response will be addressed on the next episode of Appetite for Distortion!!

Great show as usual!

Both @ZoSoRose and @Gambit83 were great, but am I the only one who thinks that Danko came across as somewhat of a dick during the interview?

At points it felt like he was looking for things to be offended by or that he went out of his way to pick apart what Brando was saying like he didn’t know what he was talking about...

It may be just me though!

Where did Niven respond to Doug?

I was emailed this. Will address it next episode.

Alan Niven has issued the following response to this story published today:

https://metalheadzone.com/ex-guns-n-roses-manager-claims-a-satan-specialist-cast-spell-on-axl-rose/

STATEMENT:

The former tour manager of Guns n Roses has an integrity that matches his math; my contract with Guns n Roses was finally signed October 1986. I had started working with the band in August. Mr. Rose walked away from his obligations to the extended contract in March of 1991.

To my eternal regret I backed Mr. Rose in recording 'One In A Million'. At that point I still believed he was not a gratuitous artist in his composing. I still believed him to be an artist, for that matter. He did not wear Manson T.shirts under my watch. He did not wear T. shirts denigrating Christ.

Furthermore Mr. Goldstein had absolutely nothing to do with the manner in which I brought David Geffen to the renegotiation table. I did not participate in those re-negotiations, or sign off on their content, since, dismissed, I no longer had responsibility for such negotiations. In that period I also supervised the renegotiation of the Artemis and Brockum contracts and directed Bill Elson of ICM to contract the initial dates of the upcoming tour.

Without doubt we can all say that Mr Goldstein presided over the rapid disintegration of the band. I, myself, have no doubt my exit was designed to allow Mr. Rose, to take over name, copyrights, etc. depriving the rest of the band.

The only people casting spells were Sharon Maynard, of whom I was unaware, and Mr. Goldstein, who directed her as to whom he wanted out of the picture. Yoda obliged by dismissing certain people's images to Rose, and Goldstein, who by his own admission, in a bizarre letter that was posted on the internet, paid her. In the end one usually finds that evil is actually more banal than we fear, and based in greed and ego.

Didn't get an awful lot done after 1991, now did they? By contrast I took an unwanted band to Wembley Stadium, my last act being putting that London show on sale.

I am long married to a light worker, renown in this area, my friends know my spirituality and that our home is full of positive spiritual talismen. By contrast, just last month I was warned that Mr. Goldstein was roaming the Southwest in a mobile home full of weapons. Do I think Mr. Goldstein and Mr. Rose are banal? You might ask that but I could not possibly comment, beyond saying ...

"his statement is just crazy pants."

I will give benefit of the doubt because you never know what someone's day was like, but...

Thank you @Gambit83 :)

Was that statement mailed to you by Alan Niven?

That protest from Goldstein was unexpected.... makes me wonder what is going on behind the scenes. This is so weird..... but at the same time, I tend to believe Niven, even if he's a nutcase, Goldstein is even more.

"Didn't get an awful lot done after 1991, now did they? By contrast I took an unwanted band to Wembley Stadium, my last act being putting that London show on sale."

Haaah.... he's fucking right :P

Thanks!

I do agree. I'll just say I was very surprised at miniscule things that seemed to upset him. I felt Brando gave him a ton of time to talk about him and non GNR related subjects

It was a really good time, though. Id love to go one again sometime

Great job @Gambit83and @ZoSoRose! Not the easiest interview but as always you didn't get flustered or inpatient with him. The Goldstein tweet to Fern took me by surprise, he wasn't with GnR during AFD which the box set celebrates. I really thought that came from left field. Niven had been better to not even reply but we all knew that wasn't going to happen. Regardless the bickering and attacks are bad for GnR.

Jut finished listening. Another rad episode! :headbang:

I used to live near Toronto and many of my musician friends had a Danko story. From what I'm told his less then pleasant mood during the interview is pretty consistent. Y'all handled it well.

@ZoSoRose great job and, plus, you sound like a Canadian! To use a @Gambit83 phrase, that's 'doubly' awesome!

Pretty impressive to make such an informative and fun episode despite a rocker with a case of the grumpies

That's strange isn't it? I cringe when I hear my recorded voice. It's nothing how I think I sound. But I'm not one of those who think I can sing 😄 Brando was right though, you have a good voice.

I know that feeling! Both about hearing it recorded but also it was only like last week when I finally noticed my own Canadian accent. I'm not even joking, prolly why its on my mind, lol

You have a great voice for podcast/radio/etc! I like that to my ears it sounds Canadian! :headbang:I knew that some in Wisconsin and Delaware share an accent with some of us, up here. Never knew there was similarities between us and Michigan though. Youre commentary was awesome, too. Kinda a natural radio personality, imho.
