  1. I was at the 12/29/01 show at the Joint in Vegas. I wrote about it at length awhile back in another thread. Couple of fun facts-

Axl was in the best shape physically that he has been in since the early 90s

One of only 4 shows to feature Silkworms until two weeks ago.

Only the third show back since 1993.

One of only four shows to feature Paul Huge Tobias on Rhythm guitar.

One of only four shows in which Axl did not have corn rolls until 2009.

One of only four shows to feature OMG.

Show had sound issues in the beginning that led to Axl leaving the stage and Robin slamming his guitar down.

Bucket did his crazy nunchucks routine.

Maybe not the best Buckethead era performance but it certainly was incredibly memorable.

I think it is, they've clearly been pasted over a beat early.

It wasn't like this on the demos and he doesn't sing it like this.

Like that stupid little 'boop' after the second 'It Don't Really Matter' in CD.  I remember people saying he won't leave that in - some even claimed it was intentional to help trace leaks.  Then it was in the album version.

Also the wailing that quickly silenced after the "and so afraid" in Madagascar.  Sounds like he was going to start a new verse then they cut it.  Again, I remember people saying that would be cut, but they left it in.

Like I said elsewhere - this utter utter nonsense about him being a 'perfectionist' needs to be put to bed.

He is obviously talented, and when he's good he's very good - but he serves up absolute garbage at times.  Poorly produced cut and pastes, and some dreadful songs.

A perfectionist wouldn't dream of writing Scraped/Riad/Silkworms - let alone recording them.  This guy actually RELEASED them.

The well is dry, he's given up, he's not going to write/record anything and you're all waiting for an album of reworked demos from 99 with his original vocal and some covers they recorded a while ago.

I've told everyone the 'new' album tracklist.

Bookmark this post.  If this album ever sees the light of day, guarantee the below will be 90% accurate as a minimum:

    • HardSkool (99 vocal)
    • Atlas Shrugged (99 vocal)
    • Going Down (Duff on Vocal)
    • Silkworms (99 vocal)
    • New Duff Song
    • Knocking on Heavens Door (99 vocal)
    • The General (07 vocal)
    • Perhaps (99 vocal)
    • PRL (instrumental with Thyme)
    • Duff punk song (this ones for Johnny!)
    • Cover (07 vocal possibly Light My Fire)
    • Oh My God (99 Vocal)

So you can all entertain yourself about how 'amusing' Pele is, while you wait for imaginary, completed versions of D-Tune, Zodiac, Berlin, Quick Song, As it Began, Curly Shuffle etc etc, or even worse - brand new Axl/Slash/Duff compositions.

If that’s the new album track list that will be extremely disappointing.

Saw the first ever performance of this back in NYC at Hammerstein.  That show was the best vocal performance I’ve ever seen from any performer in any band.

I went to one of the Hammerstein shows and the MSG show in 2006. That was one of the best eras for Axl’s voice. Just take a listen to Stuck Inside by Sebastian Bach for confirmation.

I may have mentioned Messages in that video but I can't remember. I gave Loving The Alien all sorts of attention though, that's for sure.

Have we collectively underrated Libertad? While I think Contraband is superior there are four really good songs on Libertad. Aforementioned Messages, Let it Roll, She Builds Quick Machines, and The Last Fight. I feel like people thought it sucked when it really didn’t.

I started out trying to pick obscure / lesser known closers but how could I not include Purple Rain??

As far as GN'R goes, Don't Cry Alt actually closes UYI II but I get your point :)

And yeah, I think Loving The Alien is massively underrated

Loving the Alien is massively underrated and so is Messages from Libertad. I have no clue why that song ended up as a B-side. Slash’s guitars work on that song is some of the best he did in VR.

If the band had more songs in the alt list I would say it’s possible. Think they’d want to promote the album more instead of only throwing in 2 songs. Then again who the fuck knows with this band haha

Realistically because GNR is a legacy act marketed primarily to casual fans these days I would imagine they would play 3-4 songs tops from the new disc. I would imagine they would replace CD and Better with two more new songs. Gone are the halcyon days post CD when Axl would play 3/4 of that album live. Their business model has changed dramatically. Personally I don’t give two fucks just as long as we get a new album.

I've been saying it's about Slash since 2002. It's just my guess, but I feel like my guess is backed up heavily by the fact they've never done it with Slash in the band and I don't think they ever will

If so that’s a shame because that song in particular is the musical bridge between UYI and CD. Would love to hear Slash play on it. I wonder if any awkward conversations have taken place about the lyrical inspiration of some of the CD songs.

  8. Played 4 times in 2001. HOB, RIO, LV@the joint Dec 29th and 31st. TWENTY FUCKING YEARS later it comes back out of nowhere last week (at least from a live performance stand point obviously it had leaked in various forms over the years) and then has a name change (to Absurd which is an Absurd song name) and then becomes the first official release with Slash and Duff. I would have never believed this in a million years when I heard this song live 20 years ago.

I played it for my wife this afternoon and here is her review:

“OK, that’s a horrible song and I can only understand three words: ‘motherfuckers’, ‘absurd’ and ‘you are’.  Is he singing thru a megaphone?”

I told her that she’s wrong. That’s four words.

My wife really likes GNR. And she liked Chinese. She listened once and was I like I don’t know about that one. It’s a little hard core.
