The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

I know, where did everybody go?

I watched CR, QoS and Skyfall yesterday. Just to get a feel about Craig's Bond. Skyfall is my favorite and I think it is because they toned it down. CR was a little over the top because the last film was Die another Day, so fans are use to the Brosnan action pieces. QoS was a Bourne rip off combined with Die Another Day explosiions. Not hiding it, especially the use of slow mo. Skyfall was more old fashioned.

It is definitley my favorite. I am going to start watching all of them again soon. Sadly I only got the Craig film on Blu ray, the rest are DVD.

Casino Royale makes an excellent companion to Skyfall. Casino Royale reboots Bond but Skyfall connects it to the rest of the series. Now Craig can be fully compared to the other five actors instead of being the new guy. QoS was right after Casino Royale so you still see Bond as this newly promoted MI6 agent. In Skyfall he has already been on several missions. I think QoS makes Skyfall look even better by comparison. I look forward to Craig's next two films and he seems open to doing more if he likes the script.

Seriously, if all you have on Blu Ray is the Craig trilogy, get Bond 50 - completely worth buying CR and QOS again. GoldenEye is probably the worst-looking of the 22 films, and even that is pretty good. FRWL was the first disc I watched after getting the set, and it was like watching the movie for the first time all over again.

I might just buy them separetly over the course of several paychecks. I can't afford to get the blu ray since I invested in other things. I went through enough trouble getting the DVD's

Do any of the blu ray have the documentaries narrated by Patrick Macnee? Those were very good but only go up to LTK. It gets really disappointing when youn get to Brosnan.

To answer both your questions Georgy - yes, all the special features from the original DVDs and Ultimate Editions carried over to the Blu-ray releases, including the John Cork documentaries. Only some of the Die Another Day special features were ditched for some unknown reason. The documentary on that one sucked anyways.

Also, only the initial Region 2 pressing of Never Say Never Again had missing scenes which was quickly fixed. Otherwise, you should be good to go especially if you get the later "Collector's Edition" release.

In the books he is basically Bond's French contempoary (just like Leiter is his American contempoary). Rene Mathis tends to make an appearance whenever Bond visits the European mainland.

Precisely why I wish they didn't kill him off. Great character and great actor. It would have been nice to have another option for an ally since you can't always have Leiter.

Just popped in my copy of Quantum Of Solace from the Bond 50 set. Man, I'm so fucking disappointed that the menu doesn't match the rest of the series, and they only slapped a new label on an identical disc to the initial release. It's like, they made Casino Royale match the rest of the series instead of retain it's original BD menu, so why couldn't they do QOS also? I know it's a small thing to be so disappointed about, but it's really a glaring inconsistency after watching the rest of the films.

I thought that was strange too. They went through the effort for Casino, so why not Quantum? Assholes.

The featurettes on the Collector's Edition are pretty good. Lots of facts about the rights, the troubled production, and getting Connery back. The original DVD was bare bones except for the trailer.

If you had a region-free player, the Region B Blu-ray is getting re-released in the UK in April for like $10. I imagine lots of those Blu-ray prices will quickly drop.

No word yet on a Region A re-release, so you're probably safe with the Collector's Edition. To be fair, $35 isn't the worst I've seen. I've seen the bare bones DVD go for like $50. It's crazy.

Was going to get Never Say Never Again on DVD but then I heard that many copies had missing scenes.

Yo Powerage, did you think the Brosnan film had some of the worse Bond girls? Teri Hatcher, Denise Richards, Halle Berry?

Absolutely. And I don't get all the hype bout Xenia Onnatopp. One of the fucking stupidest characters in the series.

Couldn't agree with you more. I watched Goldeneye a few times and I just couldn't get into her. I find the sex scene a little embarrassing.

I agree with you guys. Yes, she's hot, but very overrated and stupid character.

My friend and I always joke about when she kills the admiral:

"Xenia! I.... can't... breathe....!"

Edit: I agree with that too. Ourumov was a good character.

And who do you mean, the cigar girl?

Ourumov deserved more scenes.

And yes, Cigar Girl aka Maria Grazia Cucinotta. She could still be a Bond girl. A chick that Bond can bang on the side like that hot Greek/Turksh girl in Skyfall

Just popped in Skyfall. Fuck, what a good opening...I almost don't mind that it doesn't have a gun barrel opening. Quite honestly, probably the best pre-title sequence in a Bond film yet.

Think we'll ever get another film with an unrelated pre-title sequence? The last one was Tomorrow Never Dies...

True, it introduced the GPS encoder and the Gupta character. I'd love to have an unrelated opening again. Just something to get the adrenaline going. I guess you could argue that Casino's opening was unrelated. It shows Bond getting his kills but otherwise it has nothing to do with the plot of the film. Still, I think it'd be awesome to get something like Goldfinger again where its Bond finishing a mission and then starting a new one.
