The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

James Bond

I liked how in Casino Royale he just says he's a spy right off the bat because they were going to find out anyway.

They won't go with the title, Property of a Lady is the only decent Fleming title left.

Do you guys know that Ferrari wanted the DB5 to loose the drag race in GoldenEye? The product placement in the Brosnan films got ridiculous.

Interesting article on why George Lazenby should have stuck around as Bond.

I agree on all five points but one most agree with that he would have been a very human Bond. Something that EON and UA have ignored for most of the franchise 50 years. They tried it out with Dalton and they weren't comfortable and brought back with Craig. To me Lazenby started it. Moore had human elements but it was brief. Connery was a superhero in YOLO which he hated.

Plus, they're North Koreans. That's my whole argument

Just started watching Casino Royale. It never bugged me before, but after watching all the films in order, I really don't like the fact that the Craig films (mostly) have the gun barrel sequence at the end of the film. I think it works how they did it in Casino Royale, since he wasn't 007 before the film started. Also, I still firmly believe Casino Royale is absolutely hands down the best title sequence of theseries. It'll take a lot to top that one!

I agree. The gun barrel worked where it was in Casino Royale because of the context. For Quantum it should have been back at the beginning. It was like Forster just wanted to be different. Mendes confirmed he had intended it to be back at the beginning but thought it looked awkward opening onto the shot of Bond walking up the hallway. I can see his point, but I'd like it back at the start next time.

There's one thing in Casino Royale I've never completely understood - how exactly does Bond make the connection that Mathis is working with Le Chiffre when Vesper gets the text from him at dinner?

I think it was a mix of two things. First, Bond is confused why Mathis is contacting Vesper and not him as Mathis was Bond's contact, not Vesper's. The second is Bond is still trying to figure out how Le Chiffre knew and obviously he rules out Vesper, which only leaves Mathis and thus Bond becomes suspicious.

Isn't it that line where La Chiffre says, ''your friend Mathis is also, my friend Mathis''? This is the only thing I disagree with in the film Casino Royale, the suspicion being lumped on Mathis. It isn't in the book: there is no suspicion cast on Mathis at all. The phone call was merely immediately dismissed by Bond as being a fake and the Vesper plot emerges in her suicide letter at the end of the book (boyfriend kdnapped by SMERSH and SMERSH using his life to bribe her). I do not know why Eon did this as, they ended up exonerating Mathis in QOS (almost as if they were guilty) and then bumping him off and chucking him in a garbage can!

I remember the shock on people's faces when Bond threw his body in the dumpster. I thought it was stupid they killed him off since he is such a likable character and the actor was great. I wsh they would treat QoS has if it never happened. Skyfall is suppose to be the clean slate. Like a mini-reboot.

Just popped in my copy of Quantum Of Solace from the Bond 50 set. Man, I'm so fucking disappointed that the menu doesn't match the rest of the series, and they only slapped a new label on an identical disc to the initial release. It's like, they made Casino Royale match the rest of the series instead of retain it's original BD menu, so why couldn't they do QOS also? I know it's a small thing to be so disappointed about, but it's really a glaring inconsistency after watching the rest of the films.

Interested to hear your take on the actual film.

I like it. It's not the best film, but its definitely another solid performance from Craig, for which I'd probably rank it maybe around 10th favorite. I guess it's not that bad for all the bullshit that surrounds it. Can't help but laugh when I hear someone say its the worst Bond film

It certainly is one of my most-watched Bond films - both because of Craig and because its the first one I saw in theaters.

I do feel it set back Daniel Craig on Bond. No Q, no Moneypenny, no Gadgets. Just a pretentious filmmaker wanting to attack cooperations and America. It just felt unnessecary. Great performance by Craig, I think he delivered. I liked Olga Kurylenko too, she was hot and believable. But it seemed like no one knew what they were doing so they just winged it.

Skyfall is suppose to be starting fresh. It is suppose to connect Bond to previous films, hence the DB5 with the gadgets seen from Goldfinger. It will confuse the hell out of retarded fans but to longtime fans such as myself, it is greatly appreciated.

Yea...that's pretty much common knowledge. Hell, Craig has even said he was helping on re-writes on the set, immediately before filming that scene. It was a fucking mess. Feel like it could've been great if it weren't for the circumstances. Frankly, I'm a bit surprised it wasn't more of a mess.

I will say, the opera scene is one of my all-time favorite Bond scenes. And it makes me want them to bring back Mr. White, he was so fucking chill just removing his earpiece when everyone else got up to leave. He could've (still can?) make a great villain.

Oh, and I hate how willing the CIA are to dispose of Bond...at Greene's request.

Mr White was a waste of a villain. Jesper Christianson is a fantastic actor. Perfect for a Bond villain. Another actor who could play a villain or ally is Bruno Ganz.

The opera scene was great, easily the best part of the film. The opening car chase was really impressive. But the chase on the rooftops with the swinging ropes and shit. That was stupid. The Bourne inspired Bond vs. Slate fight. I can't even pay attention to the plane scene.

Oh did you catch a glimpse of the hotel girl's pussy? When she got off the bed you can see her landing strip. That was either bad editing or intentional. I am sure her grandfathers (Charlie Chaplin and Eugene O'Neil) would appreciate that.

The one who was going to get raped by the General before Camille saves her. She shows her ass on Game of Thrones and I must say, it is really nice. But seeing that in a Bond film makes it seem sleazy. I know it is just hair but upskirt shots is shit perverts look for.

Good call on Bond because I wouldn't settle for less than five stars in any South American country.
