The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

James Bond

Saw this article on the James Bond subreddit. Gotta say I'm starting to get pretty excited:

http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=40356

Empire got the chance to sit down with Bond 24 screenwriter John Logan this morning, and as you would expect us to do, we strapped him to a table and aimed a laser at his nether regions in order to extract as much information as we could. He was, naturally, reticent to divulge too much information, but did confirm a couple of details about the film’s progress.

“Right now the first draft is almost done,” he told us. “I’m terrifically excited about it! I’ve been working very closely with Sam (Mendes), and it’s been joyous to pick up from our work on Skyfall and just continue on with the storytelling. The new movie continues the themes of Skyfall. Some of the characters and themes that we began to introduce in Skyfall will play out, I hope successfully, in the next movie.”

What many fans are wondering, though, is whether any themes or specific elements from Casino Royale or Quantum Of Solace might be present in the new film – particularly a certain nefarious organisation who remained absent from Skyfall...

“There might be! Honestly, not being evasive, but the great thing about Bond is that I have fifty years of movies – 23 movies and all the Ian Fleming novels and short stories, all of which are fodder. And when I’m working on the new Bond I’m constantly going back to Fleming and the other movies – what are the bits and pieces, what are the resonances? One of the things we learned in Skyfall is that the audience really enjoyed those, they enjoyed when they saw the Aston Martin, they enjoyed when we had references to things they grew up with, either from Ian Fleming or from the other movies, and that’s always been a part of my thinking about Bond.”

So expect a cameo from Moonraker’s double-taking pigeon, basically. Asked if Daniel Craig would still be as involved in the writing process as he was in his previous films, Logan confirmed that, “Daniel’s very involved. It behoves no-one to write a character that the lead actor doesn’t want to play, so having worked so closely on Skyfall, I have my own sense of what I think Dan responds to, as does Sam, (and producers) Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson of course.”

It’s occurred to Empire that Craig’s signing on for two more Bond films might just hint at a two-part story, so we asked if Logan also expected to be beavering away on Bond 25. “I’m just trying to get one done first! If I survive this one, we’ll see about the next one!” Yes John, but is it a two-parter? “Couldn’t comment!”

Evidently the laser needed to be shifted a few inches towards the Logan family jewels. A more direct line of questioning was required. Will we see the return of Quantum? “No comment.” Will we see Blofeld in Bond 24? “No comment.” Will there be any other Double-0 agents? A pause, which gave us a quantum of hope. “Ah... no comment!”

Logan did at least repeat Ralph Fiennes’ suggestion that filming on Bond 24 is due to start in October (“I think that’s the plan”), and was giddily effusive about the whole project.

“Working on Skyfall was the most enjoyable experience I’ve ever had on a movie, ever. And I’ve done a lot of movies! And this is shaping up in much the same way, because it’s a loving, sensitive director who loves the material as much as I do, it’s producers and a studio who believe entirely in the story we’re telling and it’s leading actors who are a joy to write for. Honestly, because I’ve been working on both Skyfall and the new Bond simultaneously it’s been a really, exuberantly happy time in my life because what I’m actually writing currently brings me incredible joy.”

With his palpable delight at working on Bond reaching epic proportions, we eased off on the laser and put one final question to him: with Skyfall being such a huge movie – and a massive event, given its place in the 50th anniversary celebrations – will Bond 24 be as big? John Logan smiled back at us like a maniacal Bond villain. “You ain’t seen nothing yet!”

So stand by for what promises to be the biggest Bond of all (again). Bond 24 is released in the UK on October 23, 2015, and in the US on November 6, 2015.

Skyfall took 4 months straight to make with the cast, so this time next year, they SHOULD be done with it, hopefully no injuries on set to slow things down, and everything goes off without a hitch. They've said it is a pretty intense pressure cooker to work under, but if the previous movie made over a billion dollars and the franchise is always making money, they should have all the resources needed to be able to work on this one pretty quickly.

I was also thinking he should try to get all the James Bonds from the past 50 years in the movie somehow, even if it's where Connery, Moore, Brosnan, Dalton and Lazenby playing a card game together. It would be worth it to pay them a million a piece for a one time appearance. I don't think it could happen any other time. Connery and Moore are pretty old.

I love that last line: "So stand by for what promises to be the biggest Bond of all (again)"

There's so much potential for this film. The pressure is on due to Skyfall's success but with much of the same crew and the three year gap I have no doubt that we're in for a treat.

Vladimir Putin will play the villain.

As Vladimir Putin?

Seriously, it's going to be pretty tough for them to not crank out a killer Bond film, given the carry-over cast and crew. They knock this one out of the park, and all they'll have to do is make a decent fifth Craig film to solidify him as the most consistent Bond. Quantum Of Solace is easily the best worst Bond film (Meaning the worst from each respective actor).

Completely agree about QoS being the "best of the worst"

Not counting Lazenby:

DAF: Nothing good came from this movie. Connery looks ancient compared to YOLT and overall it's just an absolutely horrible way to end his (official) Bond career.

AVTAK: I saw it recently on TV. Not as bad as I remembered, but still pretty bad. As everyone has noted, Moore looks more like a grandpa in lots of makeup, not James Bond.

LTK: The former "best of the worst", although I really don't want to count it since he only did 2.

DAD: Nothing needs to be said.

Indeed. Just switch drugs with resources as the main plot and you have almost identical movies.

LTK is in my top ten. OHMSS is my number one Bond film. Say what you want about Lazenby's acting but he was physically convincing.

I like all the actors, even more and Brosnan. People have said that Lazenby and Rigg have no chemistry but I disagree. They had more chemistry together than Brosnan had with Sophie Marcau.

They made a dog's dinner of Quantum though following the superb, Casino Royale. I am hoping the Craig era does not look like this: 1/ great bond. 2/ Shit Bond. 3/ Great Bond. 4/ Shit Bond. Well, in it is an improvement on Brosnan: 1/ Great Bond. 2/ Three shit Bonds.

I agree. I thought the Lazenby/Rigg dynamic was decently convincing. That was probably helped by Rigg's professionalism which no doubt aided Lazenby and his inexperience. I still find it impressive that he pulled the movie off and yet had zero acting experience. I've seen far worse performances from professional actors. I still can't help but wonder how he would have turned out if he continued considering he had such a strong start.

Imagine if he had played Bond until he was 57/58 like Roger did. He would have been around until The World Is Not Enough.

I'm hoping that by the end of the Craig era we'll look at Quantum as a minor step in the wrong direction. I agree that it's the "best of the worst" and that Craig might end up with the most consistent era.

This. Gotta remember the situation surrounding Quantum too. I mean really, the movie could've (And probably should've) been so much worse than it actually was.

Yes, he was in talks with Bruce for Game of Death which Bruce was due to complete after he had wrapped Enter the Dragon. George never filmed anything and did not do anything for the, 'so bad it is good', hodge podge which was assembled together by Golden Harvest in 1978. Interestingly though, there is a big Bond connection with that version as John Barry does the music for the international print, probably his finest score (alongside OHMSS)

Watching Goldfinger again. What a movie.

It's got everything you want from a Bond movie.

On a side note, I was watching Michael Fassbender on a chat show last night. Think he would make a great Bond.

Connery is the best, but Roger Moore is in my favorite Bond movie of all time (Live And Let Die). I have an affinity for Brosnan because he was my childhood Bond and he did the role well. Craig is good, but I've never been as gay for him as everyone else is. I will say Skyfall was the best Bond movie in basically 20 or 30 years though, but thats more due to the writing than anything else. I prefer Daniel Craig in Munich much more than I do to him as Bond, but thats just my two cents.

I honestly think LALD is massively overrated. It's enjoyable, but it's basically Bond-goes-blaxploitation.

I didn't know it was actually that overrated. I knew it was one of the popular ones, at least from Roger Moore's era, but I've never heard it thrown around as the best. Goldfinger is pretty flawless. It would be my second favorite and its probably the "classic" Bond movie in every sense. There's just something with Live And Let Die that I loved the first time I saw it. Had nothing to do with the theme song, even though I knew that for years before the movie. Something about that one may me not keeping checking my watch to see when it was ending. They completely engrossed me, and that happens very rarely with Bond films. It didn't seem as pointless as the other ones, but admittedly I haven't done a run through of the Bond movies in several years. I just know I always enjoyed that one.
