Maybe the aim is to revert from the gritty realism of Nolan's Batman and a return to the more comic book world of Tim Burton's Batman.

Maybe I am just trying to find a reason why this doesn't look like a pile of shit.

More like Joel Schumacher's than Burton's.

Sorry to be "that guy", but this just screams of "dark, edgy, modern, realism"...no topping the Burton films as far as I'm concerned.

Batman himself looks great though, I have no problem with Affleck either (unsure if he is Bats in this?)

He is, but he is only in it briefly it seems
