Is a Serial Killer Responsible for 61 Deaths in Manchester?

In all seriousness does anybody actually think this could be for real?

Are they on to me?

'The Pusher' professor stands by canal serial killer claims and says bereaved families share his fears!

A university professor embroiled in a row over claims a serial killer could be stalking Greater Manchester’s waterways says he has been contacted by bereaved families ‘alarmed’ by the high number of deaths. Professor Craig Jackson, has hit back at Greater Manchester Police’s dismissal of his theory that 61 deaths in less than seven years across the region’s canals and rivers could be down to foul play.

Prof Jackson, of Birmingham City University, also suggested GMP could ‘better understand’ how the deaths came about with the use of new criminology techniques. We have latest updates on the row which is continuing today in our live blog.

He said: “What is important, is to recognise the very real concerns of dozens of individuals who have this week contacted me to give details about some of the deaths involved, including relatives of some of the deceased, and the genuinely alarming number of bodies found.

“It is unlikely that such a high number of cases are the result of just accidents or suicides as canals are not popular suicide spots, especially for men. “It is also worthy of further consideration that canals are popular sites for the disposal of bodies, a factor which inevitably invites speculation, unwarranted or otherwise. “GMP has established the cause of death in some of the 61 cases and in many others the coroner may have determined that foul play was unlikely.

“My role will be to emphasise the use of new techniques that can help in understanding criminal behaviour, such as geographical profiling and other elements of investigative psychology which might prove useful in helping GMP to better understand what has happened and give reassurance to anyone in Manchester with notable concerns.

Prof Jackson added behavioural and criminological studies show that gay men are among those people at increased likelihood of attack from serial predators. He said: “Studies of predatory serial offenders show that isolated and secluded areas, such as waterways, populated by drunk or drugged individuals who are suggestable and compliant, and who may be from minority groups who are usually overlooked in society, can provide ideal circumstances for those committing serial crimes.”

One of the deaths cited by Prof Jackson was of Chris Brahney, 22, from Timperley, who was found in the Manchester Ship Canal ten days after disappearing from a Stone Roses gig in Heaton Park in June 2012.

At his inquest, deputy coroner Joanne Kearsley admitted she simply couldn’t say how he ended up in the water.

In another death, student Souvik Pal, 18, was found dead in the Bridgewater Canal three weeks after he had been thrown out of a New Year’s Eve party at the Warehouse Project in Trafford Park.

He had been seen walking away from the venue with a mystery man. Prof Jackson said the number of bodies recovered - nearly one a month - is much higher than for similar cities with bars and clubs located near stretches of water and canals, such as London, Nottingham or Birmingham.

He added that he’s looking forward to meeting detectives and discussing the issue. He said: “I very much welcome the opportunity to meet with GMP and consider the issues. At this stage any suggestion of foul play and of serial murder in the area is supposition and further consideration of the facts remains essential.”

Yesterday, Detective Chief Superintendent Russ Jackson, of GMP’s Serious Crime Division issued a lengthy denial of the claims and said there is no evidence of foul play. He said: “What is very important to bear in mind in all these cases is that they have been subject to separate investigations and there is no evidence at all to suggest these deaths are linked or were suspicious.

“On some occasions, people have been charged with offences relevant to that particular investigation. "Whilst in other cases, it remains uncertain how people came to be in the water, in many other cases the circumstances have been established following thorough investigations.

I have nothing serious to say. But after reading all of this and giving it some thought, it really got me wondering: Have you really lived in Manchester six years, Dazey?

England is a very small country dear boy. You'd be surprised at how quick it is to get from one city to another.

In all seriousness: I think it seems a bit odd that so many people end up dead in the canal. But I might be biased, as I love a murder mystery!

I understand the bereaved suspecting foul play. It must be hard to accept that your loved one just stumbled into a canal.

I nearly started this thread a day or two ago. I don't think all the deaths are the work of a killer but I can see how a few of them have strange similarities.

I've been reading up a little bit on various opinions apparently people have made similar connections in other parts of the globe, notably the US where they believe young men have fallen victim to the 'smiley face killer'.

I was at the same Stone Roses gig as the young guy who went missing so have sort of followed this story ever since.

Having said all that I can see how drunk young men could lean over a canal for a pee and fall in. Interesting the numbers are so much less in Birmingham although experts from The Netherlands have dismissed it saying drunken deaths are common in their waterways.

Be careful where you walk or piss, guys!

I do think I have something more on topic to add now. I reread what the professor said about gays being typical victims of serial killers and his opinion on how frequent it is to dispose of bodies in waterways, and sort of compared it with the police's statement about there not being any clear connection between the individual cases, and then it struck me: Are you a fan of Stone Roses, Dazey, and, say, like to go to their shows?

It aint even in my MO, brown haired beardie weirdies tend to do more sort of concentrated mass murder as opposed to random serial killing type stuff, thats very much the white males playing field. Then again i might be doin' a big jihad against benders.

But nah, it was Professor McLeod up the tradesmans with the candlestick holder, deffo

I'm a huge Stone Roses fan but I had to sell my tickets to that show. :(

Me too! It's a weird thing to be, because they released so little, and what they released was so disparate in style with only the briliant licks of Squire constant, but yeah, I listened to them to death. In fact, I think I liked The Second Coming more than their debut. But I shouldn't really fraternize with a murderer.

This just in, a strange note written in suspicious brown ink has been found in a Mr Kipling cake box by the canal!

Dear Boss,

I keep on hearing the police have caught me but they won't fix me just yet. I have laughed when they have looked so clever and talk about being on the right track. That joke about leather aprons had me in real fits. I am down on benders and i shan't stop bumming them to death until i do get buckled. Grand work the last job was. I gave the bender no time to contract. How can they catch me now. I love my work and want to start again. You will soon hear from me with my funny little games. I saved some of the proper brown stuff in a ginger beer bottle over the last job to write with but it started to stink and then dried up. Brown crayon is fit enough i hope, ha ha ha. The next job i do i shall clip the boys foreskin off and send it to the police officers just for jolly wouldn't you. Keep this letter back until i do some more work and then give it out straight. My knife is so nice and sharp I want to get back to work right away if i get a chance. I'll be off now as Mum has prepared my favorite, bread and dripping followed by cowpat cakes. Yum yum. Good luck.

Yours Truly,

Chris the Bender

Don't mind me giving the trade name, after all, i come in through the tradesmans enterance.

PS Wasn't good enough to post this until i got all the brown shit off my hands curse it. No luck yet. They say I'm a chemical engineer now. Ha ha.
