Rocket Queen improvement.

Recommended Posts

Rocket Queen was a song that I was most looking forward to seeing Axl/Slash and Duff play together and ended up being an abomination. I hated it.. Axl, sounded like crap, the drums were awful and I couldn't stand the Fortus guitar parts.

As seen on many songs since the beginning of the Stadium tour, there has also been some improvement in RQ as well. It is still isn't perfect but it is better.

Frank has definitely improved on this song. I gotta say that from what I have seen, Frank may get most improved all around.
The intro has improved
Axl sounds good here
They seem to have gotten closer to re-capturing the important natural groove and feel of the song

I still wish they would mute Richard's guitars on this song kind of like Gilby's track on Live Era. I don't like his contributions to the jam section at all. I don't like or want to hear his solo during the song. His  generic lead style doesn't work for me. I also don't like his rhythm parts during the jam part.

Other than that it is good to see the song returning closer to it's natural form.

Awesome performance of this song! (I think Axl fucked up the lyrics a bit in the beginning, but not a big deal to me). One of the highlights of the night for me.

Edit: I listened to the video. Axl didn't fuck up the lyrics, just sang them different. In fact, it was I who was fucked up. My apologies Axl.

Really cool.

I agree that it's good that they slowed it down a bit, but I disagree about Richard.

I think one of the most important things about multiple guitarists in a band like this is that you get to compare and contrast them with each other. I don't find him a generic player, either. He makes some pretty unique choices (like how he uses a thin pick for rhythm, and a thick Jazz III for soloing) and has mad hybrid picking skills, and other nifty little details like that.

Loved the subtle Riad intro riff in the beginning

I just think he solo is pointless in this song.. Go solo on his CD songs or something. I also really don't like his rhythm during the jam part. It doesn't fit Rocket Queen at all for me and doesn't sound good behind (or on top due to volume) Slash's solo.. Other than that though, as I said greatly improved. Happy about that.

this was the best one I think...from DC

That was good as well. I would have "liked" this but I am out.. Maybe I should suck it up and pay my dues eventually ;)

I agree about Richard, I don't like his solo in Nightrain either, it really stands out like a sore thumb, his guitar tone isn't right and seems louder than Slash's. To me it sounds like finger nails down a chalk board.

I hate his solo on Nightrain too.. Just play it with style instead of trying to show off by seeing how many notes you can fit into it. There is nothing wrong with playing it close to it's original version.  They still play the song great aside from that.

At lot of people have been saying it's Riad but I call shenanigans. It sounds like it, yes, but it's not a conscious effort. Slash uses a delay in the intro of Rocket Queen to make his volume swells ring out more. All he does right at the beginning, the "Riad" bit if you will, is tease Duff's opening bass notes of the song (E to F#). The delay repeats it a couple times, coincidentally sounding similar to the intro of Riad which is in the same key. Otherwise, it's just the Rocket Queen bass intro part on guitar.

Oh that's true. It might not be a conscious decision but it sure as hell sounds like Riad lol.

Yeah at the end of the day it's apples and oranges. I'll say that Richard's funk rhythms are kinda cheesy.

Slash turned RQ into a 20 minute jam at some Conspirators shows, so I'm sure in rehearsals it went even longer than that, but with a time constraint on the stadium shows, they're probably going to stick to 10 minutes.

The jam is here to stay,so take that pee break and refill the beer.

I think the Conspirators nail the song musically certainly better than what Guns have so far, Myles doesn't quite have the dirt in his voice though i feel like i need to take shower after i listen to the original. I love this version right up there with the best ever live performances of it imo

I am not a fan of Richard's tone either; too much preamp gain, it is fizzy and harsh. And the RQ funk sections sound like 70s porn. Not good.

Perfect post. That is exactly how I feel about his tone.. Even on the songs they play good. It just doesn't have that Guns N Roses feel.. May NuGuns but not any Guns Slash and Duff were part of.

Fuck that, I have 3 CD songs to do that during ha.  They really have improved everywhere else in Rocket Queen and I don't want to miss that. I just wish someone would unplug Fortus' amp. I love the extended jams in songs. Slash band got the song up to 30 minutes at one point and I watched it in entirety a few times. I just don't like the jam this band is doing and that is now 100% on Fortus, his solo and as someone said "70's porn rhythm". Frank seems to be finding his way.  You could even see Duff standing on the riser leading him during the song.

Either was, aside from the jam part the song has improved is getting quite enjoyable again. You can tell the band put some work in before the tour.

Richard is the downer in this band for me, I don't mind Frank and Mellisa, but for me, Richard is the one who doesn't gel with the others.

His guitar tone, any of his solo spots, and his general stage persona and look, really really grate on me for some reason.

I saw him a few times with the Axl band and I couldn't bear him then (along with Ashba) but it's even worse now.

I wish Melissa would hide back stage most of the time but I agree with the rest of this.. Frank has stepped it up as of recent. But I also am not a fan at all of the Fortus solos, tone or stage presence.

Eh, if Melissa is in the band why hide her backstage? It's better and more honest to be like "hey this is Melissa she's gonna play keyboards" and just be open and honest about it. Believe me, you know I'm not on board completely with having her in the band but if she's the second keyboard player she might as well be on stage. It's not like having her on stage is keeping izzy and Steven from being there..

I feel like she isn't really playing anything most of the time though. Just dancing, looking annoying and pretending too. I don't so much mean hide her but keep her off the stage except for the songs they need her background vocals or the CD songs if that is what they really need her for.  Like they did with Tracy and Roberta. I think she just looks dumb up there pretending to do shit on a song like It's So Easy.. It's So Easy meets the Mickey Mouse club..

The whole jazz odyssey drumming from the first leg? that sucked and it  nearly ruined the song, thankfully they've chilled that section.

As far as Richard goes: different guitar players should be allowed to play the way they want, the first nightrain solo is not an all time classic that can't be changed.

A band can't be all the things that we ask of them if we push them into a box of "play it like the record!!!" that kills spontaneity and makes for a real stale show. Can you imagine Slash playing all his leads exact to the record? can you imagine Slash playing a Jimi solo to the record? he never does because when you play live either your own music or that of others you're putting yourself into the music and that self may be feeling a different approach. I've heard a lot of guitar players talk about this, and most love it: but will freely admit that it's not always good, but when it's good it's great. I like Richards interpretation of the Nightrain solo, and I think it's fair game to do whatever you want during a extended instrumental jam section. I'll take leads that are a bit too busy over leads that are filled with out of tune bends etc.

Yeah I could get on board with that. A good chunk of those illusions era people were only used for a portion of the set. That was my hope for Adler in this, Frank's the drummer and that's just how it's gonna be. But if they worked in Steven for appetite related material the shows would be better but, knowing Axl he probably fears it would bury Frank. Anyways..

Here's the last Rocket Queen. I really, really love the ending. Honestly, I can't stop watching this song from Not In This Lifetime tour and I can't care less whether it's perfect or not.

Ouch, I didn't think that one was very good.

They seem to have sped up the tempo again during the verses
Axl didn't sound very good
Still dislike everything that Fortus contributes to this song

I'm not saying it's perfect, just that it has something that makes me choose it over the previous performances. I can't describe it, it's the beauty of music, everyone hears it differently and is affected in a completely different way. :headbang:

All good brother, I just thought that was the worst one from this tour. But if you are feeling it then crank that shit in repeat ;)
