Wasn't you banned?

Only briefly.

For all the folks saying positive things about Seven Pounds...*really*? :rofl-lol:

Great call.

Seven Pounds is pure shit.

Who is more desporate to win an oscar - Will Smith or Jim Carrey?

I know, right? I'm generally quite fond of Smith, but this was inexcusable.

Agree.

Just watched the Love Guru and damn, I enjoyed it! I really thought it'd be shit after the negative reviews. Love the Bohemian Rhapsody/Wayne's World reference.

Definately not a patch on Wayne's World or Austin Powers though.

Edit: And I thought Seven Pounds might be awful, I was considering watching it because I'm a Woody Harrelson mark (White Men Can't Jump FTW!) but I HATE Will Smith as a serious actor - except for Enemy Of The State.

I love Harrelson too, but his role is small and wusstastic. :( IMO, the only reason to see it (if you're not susceptible to desperate Oscar baiting) is for Rosario Dawson, who is lovely. But clearly it worked fine for a lot of other people. I may just be a heartless bitch.

I'm amazed. Just watched Empire of the Sun. A friend of mine gave it to me because he knew I liked Christian Bale, but damn I wasn't expecting a 13 years old Christian Bale. It was great and his performance stole the show. I gained even more respect for him after seeing this movie.

All you Seven Pound fans . . . . please explain to me why you think it was so great. I found it contribed, predictable, heartless, manipulative, cinematic trite.

There were about three-hundred blatant attempts to make us shed tears . . . but only made me shake my head, laugh and wonder how movies like this get made. And more importantly, how do people really have their emotions touched by this dribble?

After watching it, I thought it had the potential to turn into a cult classic. A movie that was supposed to be a heart-felt tear jerker, but unintentionally turned into a comedy because of the ridiculous over-acting and bad script. This decades Showgirls.

This was the most ridiculous movie I've seen in the last year. Manipulation for the masses.

And Hollywood - PLEASE just give Will Smith an Oscar, so he can stop with the blatant attempts to try and win one. Smith and Jim Carrey can do some interesting work, but every few years they either put out their desporate oscar-attempt movie or their I Need Cash movie.

The last role I enjoyed Carey in was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. He showed he has the chops to act given a good script and good director.

And an insanely gifted and beautiful co-star.

I know!!! Kirsten Dunst is so hot and a terrific actress.

Just kidding.

Kate makes every movie she is in better.

And wow. You can keep the Hayden Panteras, Lindsay Lohans, Jessica Simpsons . . . . in terms of beauty, Kate is stunning.

Just Watched Gran Torino

Now, not to be sentimental here but...i been watching Mr Eastwood movies since i was a kid. The first was either Sudden Impact (4th Dirty Harry) or For A Few Dollars More, probably the latter although i was too young at the time to really understand it. Since then i have seen each and every movie he ever starred in, including ever episode of Rawhide, even all the obscure little ones before he was famous like Ambush At Cimmaron Pass, Lafayette Escadrille, Revenge of the Creature even. I've even seen a very short documentry (which was the first thing he ever directed despite popular believe that he first directed Play Misty For Me...in fact, useless trivia for ya, y'know the scene in Dirty Harry where he jumps off that little bridge thing onto the schoolbus? he directed that too, Siegel was ill that day, he even did the stunt himself).

Point being, and this really is sentimental, i just like seeing the man on the screen. Its actually come to that, my admiration for Mr Eastwood, I'm almost incapable of impartially judging his movies because...well...you pull for the people you like to do well, dont you? naturally? You see the good things about the boxer you were supporting performance, you say your home team was robbed when they lose a game, you see the merits through the mist of follys of your favorite rockstar (and we've all been there if we're on this fuckin site ) but...through all that, Mr Eastwood has never ever failed to impress me. Not ever. He has a natural talent yes, what Richard Burton called "a dynamic lethary", he's impressive i think as the last in THAT line of actors, people like Gary Cooper, Robert Mitchum, Randolph Scott even to a point, Henry Fonda, Steve McQueen had it...presence...on screen strength.

That is special in and of itself but he has more...i think, he's learnt more which perhaps is more beautiful than my other great acting hero who was just born with it on a plate and got to a point in his career where he didnt know what to do with himself or didnt care or felt he had better things to do. With Mr Eastwood...you see a growth...a moral growth, a growth in terms of his personal understanding of the cinematic medium and also a sort of revisionist understanding of the characters he has created and what was/is right and wrong about them. And you see this growing as you go from one end of his catalogue to the other, you see HIM growing or the character growing or both, im not sure which. Him i think, or his understanding of life, love, death, morality, brutality, empathy...its all there. There are very few movies in his entire career that i can honestly say was not a step forward in his evolution. He has offered us something new with a regularity that is alarming and his best work i think, in terms of him REALLY showing his chops to the world and getting credit for it has been in the latter half of his still extremely fruitful career, which is really something.

Gran Torino has all of this. I've heard Mr Eastwood say this is his last movie as an actor (something he has been threatening on and off since he first directed Misty) I don't want it to be true but at the same time i can't say that i WANT him to do more cuz i don't wanna make his choices. He's done too good a job of that up to now for me to dare have an opinion on his behalf.

Mr. Eastwood is a blessing to cinema and it should be proud of him.

As for Gran Torino? watch it...

Agreed.

I did a post a few months ago about Clint.

He is the number one Hollywood star of all time.

There maybe better actors. There might be better directors. There might be better action stars, comedians, tough guys, etc.

But NOBODY has crossed over all genres like he did. From catch phrases from his movies . . . to iconic characters . . . or genre changing roles . . . he's famous for his westerns, he's famous for Dirty Harry, he's an action star, a romantic leading man, . . . . an oscar award winning director . . . . and an accomplished musician.

As far as I'm concerned, he is the number one hollywood figure of all time.
