The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

Excellent analysis. It makes me want to marathon the Craig films right now and then see SPECTRE about 50 more times before the end of its run.

On a side note - Gregg Wilson confirmed that the title is indeed intended to be capitalized so what's with all the media neglecting that? Assholes!

I haven't understood why no one else seems to be capitalizing it either. The Wikipedia page even goes as far as saying it's not an acronym anymore

Change the title of the thread to "Fuck the media"

I loved that tracking shot in the PTS sequence. Bond is a better man than most, we would have not left that hotel room if that girl looked at us like that while laying on the bed.

Or if Monica Bellucci was in that lingerie. I'd be like "fuck it, the world is on it's own!"

Saw it for the third time tonight. Great fucking movie, and the criticism is way overblown, imho. Gets better with multiple viewings.

I find the fan consensus is much better than the critical consensus. So many people (critics that is) are hung up on the "it wasn't as good as Skyfall and therefore it sucks" line of thinking. I'm not sure yet if I'll end up ranking it above Skyfall but it's a damn good movie and a mighty fine follow-up. Most of the people I've talked to who've seen it over the weekend loved it so I think fan word of mouth will do positive things for it.

Most of the people on the Bond subreddit agree with the critical reception that it sucks. Their loss :shrugs:

Give it time and it will become one of the better Bond films. We can all agree it is better than Quantum but CR and SF fans will continue to knock at it.

I think SPECTRE does things that Skyfall and Casino Royale weren't able to achieve. The scenes between Bond and Madeline didn't feel as forced as Vesper and Bond. Some people whined about SIlva taking forever to show up in the movie, it didn't take long for us to meet Waltz, but during the course of the movie we find out who he is.

And unlike Casino Royale and Skyfall, SPECTRE has achieved being a more traditional Bond film.

He really is the Bumblefoot of Bond.

He will be back, along with Mendes, for Bond 25 in 2018. Mark my words. 25 films is another nice milestone for the franchise as well.

Rolling Stone gave it a 3.5/4 review. The UK reviews were also positive.

There were enough giving it favourable reviews and comparisons to Skyfall, but overall as I think Bacardi put it a couple pages back, the reception has been lukewarm. Nothing overly negative but nothing fantastic either. think a lot of that is more because we haven't a whole year of promotion leading up to it like Skyfall. People really got caught up in the Bond hype that year, and for good reasons. It seems rather quiet this time around in comparison, but that was bound to happen.

As P5 said, it's their loss to the naysayers. The fan reception at the CBn forums has been pretty positive as well.

My old roommate texted me last night that he thought SPECTRE sucked, said it was way worse than QOS. It's the first time we've ever really butted heads over a Bond film.

Your roommate will get over it. This is the film that will end Bond friendships.

Craig has to do one more film, but the way it ended was pretty good.

Bond in the middle of the road, M on one end Madeline on the other. Bet when he met Mr. White awhile back he never thought he'd be banging his daughter.

Yeah the Bond fans have been divided into factions. There's the Casino Royale fans who say that is the best, the Skyfall fans, the Butthurt Brosnan fans, the old farts who only care about the Connery films and there's the rational ones who understand how formulated these films are and just enjoy it for what it is.

It makes no sense how critics dismiss this film when they jerked off to Rogue Nation. I am a big fan of MI, still haven't seen Rogue Nation but anyone can see those were the same movies over and over again. It was like when McClory remade Thunderball and wanted to remake it again.

After enjoying Craig's tenure, I had started to desire a traditional Bond film with gadgets, M, Q, Moneypenny. SPECRE has all that with a twist. M isn't just sitting in his office, Moneypenny isn't just some secretary pining over Bond, Q isn't some old man reprimanding Bond, they were actually out in the field doing things. Sure in past films you see them out of their ordinary settings at Universal Exports but they were still doing their old routine thing. You never actually see Q in that much danger. Plus who better to take down Dingbag than M?

What was that film where Q was talking to a microphone in a broom and just non-nonchalantly throws it in the bushes? Was it The Living Daylights?

Licence To Kill, when Sanchez takes Bond and all the Chinese businessmen to show them the drug operation.

I agree that one of my favorite aspects of SPECTRE is seeing M, Moneypenny, and Q in more substantial roles. I remember everyone was bitching up a storm about Ben Whishaw after Skyfall, but I think he's been excellent so far. Certainly much better than John Cleese.

I don't see them waiting any longer than 2018 unless they have to rally hard to get Mendes back yet again. The only reason Skyfall took four years was because of MGM's financial troubles. I'm all for them taking the extra year if need be but I don't see it happening from the studio's point of view. Their deal with Sony is up but I think they'll re-sign with them so from that side of business there won't be any extra reason for a delay.

It's probably the most polarizing Bond film to date - I can't think of any where there's a number of people both praising it, and others saying it is the worst film of the franchise.

No kidding. It baffles me to see people calling it the worst of all. Have they sat through DAD, DAF, and AVTAK? SPECTRE is what happens when you inject Skyfall with the classic Bond elements, so it's hard for me to fathom it ranking lower than some of the true turds of the franchise.

I also need to add a couple Easter Eggs that someone on CBN pointed out. I can't believe I missed the first one considering Tanner even acknowledges it.

- the safehouse near the end of the film is called Hildebrand Antiques and Rarities. The Holdebrand Rarity, eh?

- the elevator that Bond and the girl use in the PTS is the same one that Bond and Pam ride up to see Q in LTK (filmed at the same hotel)

I haven't compared a picture but I'm also pretty sure Craig is dressed the same as Dalton during the scenes in Tangiers a la TLD.
