Vincent Vega
I've heard the term bandied about at some guitar players but never quite understood it...What is guitar noodling?
bacardimayne
Seems to be shredding without distortion.

sweetness
I've always considered "noodling" just mindlessly running through a scale, I'm not sure there's any specific definition though..
Guest Len B'stard
What Sweetness said, superfluous soloing for its own/showing offs sake that doesn't particularly serve the purpose of the piece in question. wasted
Izzy called Slash a noodler. but izzy is pretty sparse.

T.wa.T
I've always thought it meant just messing around.
Rovim
To me it's soloing without a sense of direction. Like it doesn't have a clear order or a beginning, middle, and an end.The notes don't really connect well enough to form a cohesive bigger idea that serves the purpose of the song as a whole.Basically Bumble's 14 years solos. Bruno P.
Or Robin's November Rain solo. Or DJ's This I love solo.
chevelle
Shredding around scales without any real melodic purpose in mind. Filling space with a lot of notes for the sake of filling space with a lot of notes.
Towelie
^^ And lets be honest here, that is something pretty much every advanced/great/virtuosic guitar player does. Whether it's Slash on a solo like Slither, BH on a song like Nottingham Lace, BBF on Riad solo... They're all guilty of it to some degree. Playing what seems like a gazillion notes a second to show off their speed and prowess on the instrument. One of the only lead rock guitarists I can think of who doesn't do this is DJ Ashba and that's probably only because he isn't good enough to do it. Bruno P.
He does all the time. His pick tapping is pure wankery, but listen to what he does @ 4:45That shit is terrible and he does all the time.
moreblack
The guitarist for this band just never stops. Even the guy from Dream Theatre knows when to reel it in...
