It is the old 'opener' problem and it has been that way since Strauss retired in 2012. here we are in 2016 and we are no closer to solving it. Compton, Carberry, Lyth et al. have all failed there - heck, they even moved Moen up.

Either one of Durham's openers, Mark Stoneman or Keaton Jennings could work; Jennings is having a remarkable season, leading the division one run total (965 runs at 68.93). Then there is Kent's Bell-Drummond, Northant's Ben Duckett, etc. If you are looking at somebody to bat at fourish you have the likes of Durham's Scott Borthwick who can also offer leg spin (although normally a three), Jason Roy (if the ECB stop fast-tracking him as a T20 specialist), Kent's Sam Northeast, etc. There is a lot of batting talent there really, in the county scene. I rather agree however about them giving a batsman a 'series'. You wouldn't want a return to the '90s!

Yeah, there are too many One Cap Wonders out there. England have always had a funny issue with either dumping players too soon, or hanging on to players for far too long, with them seldom getting the timing just right.

Sounds more like Pakistan, all the lads always say they have a selection thing.

Hales is coming across like a dick, the cry baby gesture and this thing with storming into the third umpire's office. He didn't even knock apparently! The third umpire could have been having a good wank to porn hub on his phone for all Hales knew! Thing is, you can get away with sledgy cockiness if you are actually good - this is how the Aussies got away with it for years. If you're shit you just come across as an inflated dickhead who deserves to get his cards. Just look at Muhammad Ali; the guy would be a total dickhead if he was shit.

I've actually been more impressed with the Pakistan on this tour, albeit they were on a public relations jaunt following their last tour here.

Just to say I wouldn't be too adverse to a Bell recall. He scored a century versus Hampshire this season. Since He is only one year older than Compton and they were persevering with Compton so the age thing is academic. Maybe I'm a bit sentimental as I grew up watching this guy batting elegantly for England but he certainly has runs in the bank. Sam Robson perhaps deserves another chance as Cook's opener - he has improved since he first played test cricket. Tom Westley is another one for Vince's position, averaging in the higher forties this season I believe for Essex, although the ECB selectors tend to ignore division two.

Summarising potential batsmen,

opener: Robson (recall), Stoneman, Jennings, Bell-Drummond, Duckett

Three or four: Jason Roy (from OD teams), Borthwick, Westley, Sam Northeast.

Is this the Test cricket going on? Doesn't it have 50 overs?

Ehh, no. That is One Dayers. Test cricket lasts (potentially) five days, circa. 90 overs a day.

This was the last test of four, 2-2 assuming Pakistan get these (now) 39 runs. It should be over in half a hour.

Then the one dayers start.

No, this is test cricket. You do not cap the number overs, just try to fit around 90 in a day. I don't know how many overs we've had today but we are just coming up to tea, so it should be around sixty (probably more like 50 in truth as the modern players are lazy with the over rate).

How would you even do that? just keep on playing till you are tired? like there have to be specific amount of overs in each game?

Well usually a team is bowled out a day-to-a day and a half. Then the game moves on. You have to bowl a team out twice to win the match.  In limited overs cricket, there is not as much emphasis on teams being bowled out (you just take a few wickets to frustrate the run rate).

So England made 40 runs in how many overs?

It is now tea. Pakistan need twenty-four runs (was forty) between 4pm - 6pm. They have all their wickets in hand. That should be about thirty overs. England need to, ehh, bowl them out to win haha.

Then there is a whole fifth day if Pakistan don't do it but that is highly unlikely.

Well this is not my cup of tea, its pretty confusing, I will stick to T20 matches and the World Cup.

It is the greatest form of the sport. You do not get those variables like you do in the shorter formats, those little key moments which end up having massive repercussions for, not just the test match but the whole series. For instance, when Warne dropped Pietersen (on 15) in the slips on the final day of the 2005 Ashes; Pietersen ended up making 158 thus denying the Aussies the victory they required to maintain the Ashes and handing the Ashes to England for the first time in eighteen years. Only Test cricket can throw forth those pivotal moments.

It is an epic.

I also love the way you sort of immerse yourself in it, get used to the opposing team. This summer will forever be about England v Pakistan. You start to become quite the expert on the opposing team's tactics and team selections.

Yeah but it will take me time to get used to it, is the tea break over? what is the score now?

If you are south of the Thames support Surrey, if you are north of the Thames, Middlesex.

Shirley they'd be better off changing their names to Norf Lahndahn and Saaf Lahndahn if they want people to turn up to watch?
