I just try to live by the golden rule and treat others how I'd want to be treated. Every one has their own story, their own reasoning, and every one thinks they're doing the right thing most of the time. Understanding that really helps me understand and interact with others much better.

Wow, if the King James Bible and indeed almost every version I've ever seen (granted, not counting the modern sanitized version you mention...I wasn't aware the divine word of God needed so much revision), got "slay them before me" out of "I don't want to see their faces around here" it makes you wonder what else has been mistranslated and adjusted over the hundreds of times and years. Almost as if it's an unreliable document written by primitive man, filled with contradictions, atrocities, inhumanity and prejudice. But nahhh.
