Guns n Roses one of the worst musical comebacks

Chinese Democracy was, in 2008, very much a sweet child o’ Axl Rose’s very own, with no Slash, and Rose assembling a long list of musicians to replace the band that had recorded Appetite for Destruction et al. It reportedly cost more than $13m, took 15 years to make and, though it made the upper reaches of the charts, it undersold and underwhelmed, except as a token of unbridled egotism

apparently some motherfuckers were listening to Howard Stern (i like the guy btw)

Who said it's come back?

It's not really like evolution like other bands that have also stood the test of time, it's more like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, that Guns N' Roses just sort of mutated..

Can any sane person really disagree with this?

The reviews were mixed. Some liked it when it came out and some hated it. Nobody said it was amazing, and it wasn't. It was what Axl wanted it to be though. I enjoyed that aspect that he created this album, so for me it was enjoyable.

The best album that year was Viva La Vida from Coldplay. It is a unique album that tells a complete story from beginning to end. The album is well put together, enjoyable to listen to and consistent. I hadn't heard anything like it before and that is what I was hoping for from Guns N Roses, so in that sense I was disappointed.

The comeback is reflective of the album, inconsistent, and underwhelming. Axl surrounded himself with flammable materials ready to light up, but everything from the album to the comeback lacked the spark needed to get it going.

I love Chinese, but that's exactly what happened

Exactly.

CD is one of my favorite albums of all time.

But Axl blew it in terms of a GnR comeback. How anybody can disagree with that is beyond me.

Gunner PT will find a way to disagree on this

LOL. There are 7-8 posters on here who will disagree, will say the magazine/blog/website or whoever posted that should STFU and nobody cares what they think, they are just bringing up Axl to get page views, everybody is jealous of Axl, the label screwed Axl over, that Axl is God, etc, etc, etc,

Of course he blew it.

2001 Rio 3. 150,000 people are shitting their pants. He plays five new songs and has wacko hyper talented people like Buckethead in his band.

2014 he plays the same boring setlist in a casino in front of 1.000 people with Cashba and a bunch of strippers.

Something has happened in the interim?

That is a sad comparison.

Axl had the chance to do something really special with that band.

And again, with Axl's talent and the abilities of fortus/bbf/ashba/Stinson......I think he could have done something really cool again.

Why Axl refuses to unleash hell with the bands he puts together is beyond me.

It's almost like he doesn't want to be successful anymore.

Yep. I was expecting Axl to be in full force, killing it on stage in Rio 2011. It would have been a great opportunity to perform new unreleased songs too.

Dude, don't you know that GnR is the ONLY band in the history of the world that their fans don't want them to play unreleased music before an album comes out, and their fans think they shouldn't play new songs before an album comes out (even though GnR used to do that and every band in the world does it). And if Axl busted out two new songs during a tour, 75% of the audience would be bored or pissed off enough to walk out of the concert.

The music itself isn't worth commenting on.

I'm glad that you're not a journalist, because you have zero clue about music journalism if you think that

and yeah, before the usual click jumped on me and calling me an Axl defender or a blind fanboy: i think CD is an OK album, but i'm definitely more of a fan of the old stuff

Does anybody serisously was thought that Axl will be on the top again with his new band?

if you answer with a yes, then YOU are the blind fanboy lol

I'm waiting for Rage Against the Machine to come back... They got back together recently, I swear.

That band's a band that is paused, no evolution, yet, so far just an epic suspended pause...

Maybe Axl had some vaccinations and became autistic as some vaccines can lead to that by born children, and now he can't handle change anymore :P

The weird thing with Chinese was that the release of the record wasn't really a comeback period for Axl. The main comebacks were 2001 & 2006, in '08 he was out of the public eye and didn't even start doing shows to support it until a year later. Had it even come out a year or two earlier I think it would have been received more favorably - there was a lot of goodwill in the music press towards Axl during that time, especially Classic Rock Magazine here in the UK.

I think they announced they split up (again) recently. They reunited in like 2008 and did the festival circuit for a few years. I agree though, would be great if they came back, probably the most insane live show I've ever been too was them at the Download Festival in 2010. Brad Wilk's been busy though - he played on the latest Sabbath record and he's drumming for the Pumpkins now. Morello was in Springsteen's band briefly recently as well. Would also love an Audioslave reunion- that first record was incredible.
