wasted Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Damn. Da. Ham. They have a lot of rocking tunes. Hollywood (Down on your luck) makes me want to go out and buy a gun! Quote
classicrawker Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Thin Lizzy is in my top 5 favorite bands especially the Gorham/Robbo version of the band.Even as Lynott went into a heroin death spiral he still managed to put out solid albums and music.I highly recommend the following official live releases and bootlegsfantastic official release of the classic Gorham/ Robbo lineup when they were first starting out. It is fascinating to compare this show to the ones from just 2 years later and see how the band evolveshttp://www.amazon.com/UK-Tour-75-Thin-Lizzy/dp/B001BS4R9A/ref=sr_1_6?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1444998893&sr=1-6&keywords=Thin+Lizzy+liveGreat bootleg with 2 SB shows from 1976http://www.collectorsmusicreviews.com/shades-label/thin-lizzy-wild-eyed-boys-shades-464/This is a complete 1977 show from Philly some of which was used on the Live and Dangerous album. This bootleg was "liberated" from Wolfgang's Vault and has perfect sound. There is also an official release which is a compilation of this show and a second show from the next night.WGV bootleg of the complete show from the first nighthttp://www.giginjapan.com/scan132/thin-lizzy-breakout.htmOfficial compilation. Unlike Live and Dangerous this release supposedly has no overdubbinghttp://www.amazon.com/Still-Dangerous-Tower-Theatre-Philadelphia/dp/B001QWDTUY/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8You can also listen to the 77 Philly show at this amazing free music streaming sitehttp://tela.sugarmegs.org/alpha/t.html Quote

Gordon Comstock Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Thunder and Lightning is a badass song. Quote
The Matinator Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 One of my favorite bands of all time, Phil was one of the greatest RIP Quote
wasted Posted October 17, 2015 Author Posted October 17, 2015 Thanks for the links. Not sure why but TL sound is a bit AFD? Maybe weird comparison. Also hear some celtic touches on Paradise City. Quote
bran Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 one of the greatest rock bands of all time. phil lynott is a legend, a great performer, singer and lyricist who died way too young. john sykes was a beast on thunder and lightning. Quote
J Dog Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 Thanks for the links. Not sure why but TL sound is a bit AFD? Maybe weird comparison. wasted Posted October 18, 2015 Author Posted October 18, 2015 I used have jailbreak. When I was on the dole I'd go to this cafe in the market and there a stall that sold second hand cds. I'd get Thin Lizzy and Motorhead cds for a quid or two. Them take them to this cafe and the guy in there would play them while I drank coffee and read papers. But i left the cds there bcos I'd be back in morning. But I atopped going there about forgot about the cds. I had two of three albums. Chinatown I bought bcos of the cover. I had Jailbreak and A live album. Motorhead I had Ace of Spades and a double Live album. But I havent listen to Thin Lizzy since 20 years ago. It's kind of hard rock but very listenable and the vocals are silky. Also guitar work and transitions are very AFD you think where is it going and somehow they find a guitar part to escalate and move it forward in a nonchalant organic way. I can't see how anyone wouldn't like it. It's unpossible to unlike it. Quote
DieselDaisy Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 (edited) If you remove the moral question over the legitimacy of a Lizzy without Phil (just for sake of argument), it was rather odd, the notion, 'Thin Lizzy supporting Guns N' Roses' back in 2012 - it was odd to see it on the flyers. It is a bit like The Rolling Stones supporting The Black Crows, or The Beatles supporting Oasis! There was a similar scenario with which Alice Cooper found himself supporting Mötley Crüe recently! Mötley Crüe are not fit to carry Alice's cod piece.PSI love Lizzy. ''Cowboy Song'', ''Emerald'', etc. Edited October 18, 2015 by DieselDaisy Quote

moreblack Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 (edited) That album Axl's got tattooed, the only one with the Gorham/Gary Moore guitar combo is stellar. Gorham and Moore should've done more music together. Edited October 20, 2015 by moreblack Quote

wasted Posted October 23, 2015 Author Posted October 23, 2015 Cold Sweat is so heavy, it's actually heavier than the Megadave cover. Thunder and Lightining is pretty insane those solos are virtuoso crazy. Hollywood Down on your Luck has a great live version. Big dumb riff too. Killer on the Loose, Chinatown and Do anything You want to are great too. KOTL seems like such a cokehead song. I imagine Joey Diaz on the ramage to that one! Quote
Silent Jay Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I was in Dublin in the past two days, saw the Phil Lynott statue. Quote

This is not live but from a 1974 BBC session with crowd noise dubbed in. Here is an amazing track that was only done live a hand full of times in 1976 and never released on the original albums until the recent Jailbreak Deluxe reissue. Like most Lizzy it is much better live. This is from the Chicago Riviera Theater in 1976 Edited October 23, 2015 by classicrawker Quote
classicrawker Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 Thin Lizzy is best known for the Jailbreak lineup with Robbo and Scott Gorham on twin lead guitar but that band has had many personal changes over their short career. This was Thin Lizzy's first hit record, a cover of an Irish trad song, way back in 1973. This is the original band which was a trio and had Eric Bell on Guitar Quote
classicrawker Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 (edited) If you really are into the band this large format book is excellent. It was written by Harry Doherty (RIP) who used to write for Melody Maker. He was close friends with the band, toured with them, and was asked by Lynott to write an biography of the band. His original manuscript was not released by the time Lynott died and the family asked that he not release it as it was too graphic concerning Lynott's addictions. He published toned down, but still detailed band history, excerpts in a number of issues of Classic Rock Magazine and this book collects those with additional text and fantastic photos to make the best Thin Lizzy book I have read so far. http://www.amazon.com/Thin-Lizzy-Boys-Back-Town/dp/1780384327/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1445631484&sr=1-3&keywords=Thin+Lizzy Edited October 23, 2015 by classicrawker Quote
