Greatest Hits Volume 2 Memorabilia

Recommended Posts

Hey all.  Yes I am posting this in the main section, but only because I think a variety of people might be interested in it.  I don't know how many people look at the memorabilia section these days.  As always, I understand if it gets moved.

Of course I like all things GNR and collect it all (almost!) but I am always most intrigued by test pressings, misprints, things that never made it to the market, etc.  As we all know the original Greatest Hits was a bone of contention with the band.  A second version was going to be released, to be called "Welcome to the Jungle: The Very Best of Guns N' Roses."

In this thread here (http://www.heretodaygonetohell.com/board/index.php?topic=59161.0) we can see the proposed track list.  Many thought it was fake at the time (and the artwork may have been although IMO I don't think so) but the track list is legit.  A while ago on eBay I came across an auction that I either forgot to bid on or was outbid on, I can't remember (getting old :tongue2:).  But I did save the images from the auction:

Would have loved to get that, especially because it has a misprint as well (check out Pretty Tied Up).  Sadly that auction only contained one cd from the set of two but it confirmed the track list for sure.  Well lo and behold what do I see on eBay the other day?  None other than the complete set!   I jumped at the chance to purchase:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/GUNS-N-ROSES-2006-Best-Of-UME-Publishing-Licensing-Acetate-Test-2xCD-Set-/172101985444?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=soh7az9AazEdje1%252BF%252BBrttSMvX0%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

I couldn't believe it!  Only after I purchased it did I notice that the track list was changed.  I wonder why?  Not only that but compared to the track list from that thread in 2010, for Disc 1 instead of Don't Cry original or alternate lyrics they used the demo.  And they took out Perfect Crime but didn't add anything else back in.  For Disc 2 they took out Black Leather, added Shadow of Your Love (!), and they added a track.  Even more surprising is the added track, a demo of WTTJ.

I haven't listened to any of the tracks yet since I haven't received it yet, but I'll let you know as soon as I do.  Crazy!  :devilshades:

How do you know someone didn't just throw that together and put it on eBay? There's absolutely nothing official on this release so I'd caution any idea that any of that is not fan made.

troccoli is, like, the biggest GN'R collector in the world. I don't think he'd go after it if he didn't indisputably know it was legit.

Black Leather seems a bizarre inclusion. Not that it's a particularly bad track at all, but... does it stand out in their catalogue? And why include that rather than Since I Don't have You, if it's supposed to be a 'hits' album...?

Pretty sure Since I Don't Have You is on the first greatest hits alongside Ain't It Fun as far as "TSI?" songs go on that album

I always wondered why Estranged wasn't on the greatest hits.  I assumed it's because I don't think it was particularly successful as a single (?).  If another volume of greatest hits was planned, then I totally see why Estranged wasn't on the first one.

Well I certainly understand the skepticism.  I guess that no matter what I am about to say there is nothing I can say that can absolutely, 100%, no doubt about it prove that the item is official/real/legit.  However let me say this.  On just about every fake item I've ever seen, the bootlegger goes out of their way to place the Geffen or Universal logo somewhere on the item.  On these you will see the Universal name and the abbreviation UME but no logos anywhere.  Another thing is that in my experience bootleggers don't go out of their way to fake test pressings and/or acetates.  Also, most test pressings/acetates don't have logos on them:

http://www.troccolitm.com/tapeuyi52ndst.html?1245291557515

Lastly, IMO the point of faking something is to sell a lot of it.  I don't know how much time or $ goes into faking something, but I don't think that someone would do all of that just for $175.  If I see a flurry of these over the next few days/weeks then I will concede the point (and file a PayPal claim!).  For example there are many fake LLAS out there.  There are many fakes of the GNR black and white EP from Japan.  Or the color vinyl AFD.  Or these:

Again, who knows.  But based on all the evidence I mentioned I would vote legit.  Those glass master acetates of AFD you see if one of the links there has been authenticated.

I'd be very interested in seeing/hearing more about this when you get it.
