Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Christopher McQuarrie is so awesome.

Unfortunately, I think he is slumming with these Mission Impossible movies. I don't care how great of business they do nor how well they are reviewed. They are serialized romps and they are beneath him intellectually. How can people get excited for a sixth or seventh film in a franchise?

His best film (The Way of the Gun) showed he had an innate maturity, a downright classic sense of character interplay, an ear for dialogue that rivals the best writers and a fondness for seventies themed action. Way of the Gun was also the film that put him in movie jail for more than a decade: nobody would hire him for some bizarre reason.

He's since built a career on partnering with Tom Cruise. I don't mind that so much but it kills me that he hasn't taken on a directing gig based on original material. He's good enough to do whatever he wants.

I love the Mission Impossible movies. Tom is such a bad ass in them! You know this movie will be freakin awesome!

This looks awesome.

The franchise keeps getting better n better as Tom Cruise gets older. He's unstoppable.

Yeah, I agree, but he did get hurt again doing a stunt. He needs to be super careful! The Scientologist community would lose their money make if something happened to Tom Cruise. lol

Meh, he only broke his ankle. The whole thing was blown up in the media just as an excuse to poke fun at his age when the exact same injury could have happened to a stuntman of any age under the circumstances.

This is the first time in the franchise a director from the previous film will be returning. The series is known to be formulated, it basically has the same basic story.  Each director brought something new to the series. De Palma started it all with a thriller. Woo brought in the Hong Kong style action. Abrams was the first to bring in that team element. Bird brought some fun to the series and really improved the teamwork. McQuairre must have gotten on well with Cruise. He also directed him in Jack Reacher which is an underrated film.

I hope with Fallout they will change things up. It is always the team being disavowed and the bad guy is always an inside man.

Already made a post in the movie thread about it, but bumping this thread because I plan on seeing the movie another time or two in theaters.

An incredibly awesome movie that somehow comes out on top as likely to be the best in the series (ratings-wise, it is), with stunts that get crazier and crazier each movie, and they never seem out of place purely for the spectacle. Not to mention Cruise's work ethic is overly commendable.

Bond might have its longevity and charm for the character, but thrle Mission: Impossible franchise has surpassed the Bond films in my eyes.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to see Mission: Impossible - Fallout as soon as you can.

This film has surpassed the recent Bonds. I was in awe of some of the scenes.

It was incredible. The best of the series one of the best spy thrillers I’ve ever seen. I might try to see it again before it’s out of theatres.

For the Bond comparison - I think what I liked best was how it exploited its locations. Unlike, say, SPECTRE, which had a billion locations without much purpose or service to the story, Fallout used all of its locations to service the plot and action perfectly. Pretty much how Bond used to be (Casino Royale and Skyfall excepted).

Finally saw it. I enjoyed it very much, but just not quite as much as the last one.

It's biggest strength is all the characters. Seeing unexpected old faces like Lane Sullivan and Ethan Hunt's ex-wife was a nice surprise. I also liked seeing the new relationship between Ethan and Ilsa starting to blossom more. Furthermore, I found all the new characters to be rather interesting.

Its biggest weakness is the fact that the pacing just does not have the same kinda momentum that im used to from these films. It took awhile to "get going" and the plot at times felt a bit all over the place. Also, I wasn't really a big fan of the "darker" tone. I enjoy this franchise more when it's light on its feet, so to speak... That ending with the helicopter falling on the mountain was just ridiculous, though. An example of a scene being TOO light on its feet, actually.

Don't get me wrong, though. I did still have a good time overall. I wasn't really expecting this film to be as great as Rogue Nation anyway cause for me that one was perfect and you'd have to do ALOT to top it imo.

Ranking:

Rogue Nation

Fallout

Ghost Protocol
