Ehh, Bono, chap behind Live Aid and Live 8, self-proclaimed do-gooder?

Ehh?  You show me where either band has ever referred to themselves as "politically correct", this was your original claim, prove it.

What does Politically Correct imply?

That you say the things everybody want to hear instead of what you really think about the subject?

Yeah, well, there is a chance that Guns N' Roses or Axl Rose, to be more precisely, is still homophobic/misogynist but he has great responsiblity in front of the audience and I think he's learned that from the past.

He knows very well his 'One in a Million' wasn't welcome back then, much less now, so what is he supposed to do?

Like @tsinindy said, I think it's okay to assume they did it out of compassion or empathy, and not so much because they agree with being "gay" or because it is the right thing to say.

You don't have to LIKE homosexuality or practise it yourself in order to empathize with the feeling of losing someone at the hands of a hater.

People were killed and those people were the children of someone else, the sibling of someone else, friends of someone else....

Who cares what they do in bed?

It is NOT CORRECT to kill people!!!

Discussion should end right there.

The guys deeds speak from themselves in this instance of Bono I believe! Or are you actually implying the opposite, that Bono is not politically correct?

You said they are "self-certified politically correct  bands..."

i am not implying anything.  I am saying neither band has ever self verified themselves to be politically correct or claimed to be politically correct bands.

I will now imply that what you said is downright silly and you are now offering evidence as to why.  Thanks!

Your problem is with pedantry and not whether or not Bono is politically correct or not? It is a term of expression.

Correct to a degree.  However, lets delve further into it.  As I said with the GnR video, do you think Bono does what he does to be "politically correct" or bc he is a compassionate individual who is trying to use his celebrity status to make the world a better place?

My issue with saying it is out of political correctness actually means (not just implies) that the acts are dome more for appearance than they are out of true concern, compassion, empathy or cause.

My final point being do you know Bono or Chris Martin well enough to make such a claim?  Or does it just feel good for you to sit on your couch and accuse someone of such bc you really have nothing better to do?  I say that as I am sure based on your depth of knowledge and vocabulary you certainly realize the relevance of accusing them of being "self-certifiably politically correct".

Bono bangs his drum about helping the poor whilst all the time he's on a tax avoidance scheme

I cannot think of a band more politically correct to be honest, but through your manner of speaking I don't suppose that politically correct would be nothing to be ashamed of (in your eyes)? Besides, politically correct is certainly a term used derogatorily by critics of politically correctness to criticise people like Bono, so I do not suppose Bono would proclaim he is politically correct but would speak in terms similar to you, in your first paragraph.

I make no compunction of disliking both political correctness and U2 immensely.

That is typical of political correctness, a faux ideological empathy engineered up by 'champagne socialists'.

It could be the implications that go with the term "politically correct".  As noted it can be used in a negative manner to indicate acts are done or things are said more for appearance than with true meaning.  Maybe that is not what you mean when you use the term, but that is what I think of when I hear someone say "GnR did that video to be politically correct".  To me that means they think GnR didn't really mean it, they just did it to look good.

So to get back to what you said if you are using that term in that manner about Bono or Coldplay, I think that is a bit unfair as they could actually do the things they do for the right reasons and not just "to look good".

I agree it could be to look good, but I don't know any of them personally well enough to give an actual valid opinion and in the absence of that why not just assume the deeds are done for the right reasons as opposed to "look good".

with that said I'm not a fan of U2 or Coldplay either and actually despise them as far as their music goes, but that doesn't mean they may not be good people trying to do good things to make the world a better place does it?
