better is the only song i hear in a regular basis. the songs are good and i love robin and bucket's parts. it sounds pretty dated, though. specially pittman's work.

Chinese Democracy: 7/10. I used to find it completely underwhelming, but it's grown on me. Nice n' aggressive.

Shackler's Revenge: 5/10. Love the verses and that crazy solo, hate the chorus because it's so repetitive.

Better: 9/10. Pretty much everything I wanted from the album - It's always interesting and the songwriting is tops.

Street of Dreams: 5/10. The first minute-and-a-half are excruciating and weepy. Finck's solo is great, and the song improves at it goes on, but those first 90 seconds... yikes.

If the World: 8/10. Great! Very unique and atmospheric, with a cool solo and neat effects. Love the piano.

There Was a Time: 10/10. Excellent, quite a journey of a song. The mix is perfect on this one. I could do without the choir that "bookends" the song, but it's not a dealbreaker.

Catcher in the Rye: 7/10. Has its moments, but I feel the mix is really off on this one - Axl's vocals sound really flat and the music sounds compressed somehow.

Scraped: 6/10. Eh, it doesn't do much for me lyrically or musically. Axl's vocals are fantastic though.

Riad and the Bedouins: 8/10. Great! Has a very LZ "Immigrant Song" feel - love everything about it.

Sorry: 9/10. Fantastic, moody and full of atmosphere.

IRS: 7/10. Serviceable "retro" GN'R track. Sounds like it would've been at home on the UYI album. Axl's vocals are great.

Madagascar: 1/10. Utterly tiresome and maudlin. Vocals are very grating, and the quote section is just annoying.

This I Love: 8/10. Interesting stuff! Ballsiest song on the record by a mile. Love the production, Finck's solo and the orchestral bridge.

Prostitute: 10/10. A new GN'R classic, and sums up the entire journey of Axl's life during the making of the album. The outro is really an amazingly beautiful piece of work.

Shacklers Revenge: 8. Has to be loud. Live -20.

Better: 10. Classic.

SOD: 9. Could have been an Illusions.

ITW: 6. Nice to hear them expand their sound a bit

TWAT: 8. A couple parts are clumsy, keeps it from being a 10

CITR: 10. Classic. Wish they would release an acoustic version. For me it is right beside Nov rain and estranged.

Scraped: 2. I like the experiment....but it failed.

Riad: 8. Most underrated song on album. Better rock song than CD.

Sorry: 3. Boring.

IRS: 7.5 The most POP song on the album. Could have gotten the younger crowd. Terrible lyrics tho.

Madagascar: 3. Boring.

TIL: 10. Love it. Songs like this separate Axl and GnR from all the generic rock bands.

Prostitute: 9. Way better than Madagascar.

Interesting thing I just noticed.

Half the songs that Axl loves and plays almost every concert are ones I think are boring and not the best off the album.....Sorry, CD, Madagascar. I don't think the average rock fan would be that excited by them. I would replace them with IRS, Catcher and Prostitute.

Never cared for the song until I heard the studio version. Frank's drumming is superb and Bumblefoot's rhythm track with the fretless really helps carry the verses. Perhaps the most aggressive song on the album. Great opener.

Shackler's Revenge - 9

I just love this song. It's got a cool arrangement, great vocals, and is catchy as all hell. My favorite on the album.

Better - 9

Should have been the first single. The most "approachable" song on the album. Cool vocal melody and great guitars.

Street of Dreams - 8

Nothing much to say other than it's a great song. Well arranged.

If the World - 7

Good song, it was better live though. Lots of room for improv which worked. Here, it's okay.

There Was a Time - 10

The best song on the album. Shackler's might be my favorite to listen to but there's no denying that There Was A Time is the highlight of the whole album.

I'm sorry for anybody who loves this song, but I think it's lame. I get what it's going for, but it feels a little dry to me. Not much happens. Good solo though, and it works well as an Axl "vocal solo" live.

Boring. Never liked this song as hard as I've tried.

Overall, the first half of the album I prefer. The problem with opening with Chinese Democracy is that it disrupts the flow because the album never reaches that same aggression. Then again, the Illusions (as an album) had an odd flow as well. Lots of variety of styles going on. Still, the album is holding up pretty well. I've gotten lots of people who've dismissed it to listen and they've liked at least some of it.

Chinese Democracy 3/10 - Good opening riff. If not for that, I would have given it 1,5.

Shackler's Revenge 1/10 - Possibly the worst song I've ever heard.

Better 6,5/10 - Pretty good. I like it. The intro is terrible though.

Street of Dreams 5/10 - A song that was great first time I heard it. It got worse and worse for each new version of it.

If the world 5/10 - If Axl would have had a raspy voice on this it would probably have been the best song on the album. The vocals are terrible on it though.

There was a time 1,5/10 - Always hated this song. Weak vocals, weak melody and crappy guitars.

Catcher in the Rye 4/10 - A song that would be great if it was less overproduced. I liked the acoustic live version of it. The one on the album isn't very good, however.

Scraped 2/10 - Awful.

Riad N' the Bedouins 2/10 - Awful.

Sorry 6/10 - Great solo. The song is pretty boring though and way too long. I used to really like it, but have grown tired of it.

IRS 4/10 - Not as shitty as some people say. But definitely not good.

Madagascar 8/10 - This is a song I really like. If the speeches weren't there it would have been a lot better though.

This I love 6/10 - I think this is the song that had the most potential, but the finished product is overproduced and cringy with his whiny vocals. I still like it, but it could have been done a lot better.

Prostitute 1,5/10 - Completely boring, overproduced and has got extremely weak vocals.

Average: 3,9.

CD - 1 - completely uninspired. they should have used the melody from the intro somwhere as a break in the middle of the song. would have made a big diff. without ron's additions would have been 0

SR - 7 - grown to like it- bridge is a bit boring, and cool guitar parts are buried in the mix

B - 9.5 - to be 10 it needed more inspired/intricate/complex guitar esp. during verses (eg. guitar during verses in YCBM). structure is great

SOD - 5 - it builds and builds and builds... too bad the great part comes only after the solo

ITW - 8 - very special/diff song - it feels it could have ben more elaborated

TWAT 9 - if they pulled this off using only 3 chords i wonder what it coul have been if they used more chords

CITR - 5 - nice guitarwork and structure, unfortunately the general melody/harmony content is not so alluring

S - 5 - ey oh is irritating and first part of the song is completely uninspired and if there hadn't been the harmonic switch from the 2nd chorus onwards plus solo it would have been 0

RATB 1 - unneccessary axl screams, uninspired melodies, good guitars and drums

S - 7 nice harmony/melody - lots of empty space which coul have been filled with all kinds of piano/guitar/bass stuff

IRS - 7 - not very inspired riff and too repetitive but cool sounding

M - 6 grown to be very boring - the version from 2002 wmas is the best. all the good guitar melodies are drowned in the mix. but structure and harmony/melody is nice. rasp doesn't work here

TIL 8 melody, solo. i like more "meat" in a song

P 9 cool structure nice melodies. misses more intricate guitars

Wow. Your average is 5.714 and mine is 5.785. Doesn't get much closer than that. The only thing is, I think my posts are indicative of my rating of Chi Dem. Sometimes positive, sometimes negative, not quite content with the band but interested. You're first to jump to Axl's defense and nu guns defense yet you don't hardly like Chi Dem? That's sort of... odd? Don't you think? You must have more faith in this new band than you had in Bucket and Robin or something.
