Young vacationers in Spain.

I guess that most of you have seen or read in the news about these young people who go on vacation to the Spanish coast and their scandals, right?.

Most of them come from UK, Germany and the Nordic countries and every summer we hear the same stories and witness the same erratical behaviours. I´m not saying Spanish people are perfect and quiet but man, those people seem to transform when they come to Spain.

They behave like animals, they are noisy, they shit and pee on the streets, they drink untill they lose their minds, they start fights, they annoy the neighbours, they beat people for no reason, they even have sex in the middle of the street without giving a shit about the people who might see the scene (children included). Some are so desperate for a drink that they do whatever they are asked to, like blow jobs in some bars. Some are so drunk that they jump from the balconies and die or are severely injured.

People think that these things only happen in Majorca and Salou but the truth is that they happen in most of the touristic places around the Mediterranean coast. Some hotels even have lists with the names of the problematic guests and don´t allow them to stay. I live in one of those places and it never ceases to amaze me that they turn so irrational, bad mannered, violent and annoying. They brag of their good manners when they are in their countries but when they come to Spain they transform into beasts. What the fuck is so wrong with them? Don´t they have any alcohol in their countries? Or are they oppressed and censored that they free themselves when they come here?.

This is not new to us, it´s a hot topic right now in the news but this has been happening for years and nobody seemed to care.

What do you guys think about the matter?

I haven’t witnessed it myself, but I’ve seen quite a few programs on tv that focus on drunken Brits in Spain. I find it repulsive myself. I do like a drink, but the thought of lying in the street throwing up, not being able to stand up, doesn’t appeal to me (never appealed to me) to say the least, let alone making out with someone who has just been sick. Bleh. Often they return home with chlamydia or syphilis and are quite proud of it even. They think it’s quite cool.

I always hope they exaggerate it on tv though…

It happens because Spain is warm and cheap to fly to. That's it. It's two weeks liberation from families and hometowns. They go to join a community where everyone's relaxing, having a good time and speaks English. It's often cheaper to leave the UK than holiday here, because of how expensive train travel is.

November_rain, as a Brit, I offer my apologies to you on behalf of all Spaniards who have to endure this unacceptable behaviour. Your weather is nice and the sky is blue. It's no excuse for being antisocial though.

Good to see you back here ;)

I once went to Bilbao and the local youth there seemed to have this ritual of coming together on market places etc. and get loaded on a mix of cheap super market wine and soda. Nasty stuff. We stayed near one of those squares and to my surprise the next morning it was cleaned up!

I saw pretty much the same in Laganas (on the Greek island Zakynthos). And yes, it's mostly Brits. It's a good idea to stay away from those places. Although I did enjoy watching the morning walks-of-shame on the boulevard.

That place is horrid, horrid, horrid!!

Yes. But the rest of Zakynthos, thankfully, is absolutely beautiful.

Tourists in general suck, especially if you live in a place where they flock to by the millions. It's as if they leave all their common sense and their common courtesy back in their own country. Unfortunately they're a necessary evil and vital to the economy. New York City lost I don't know how many billions of dollars in tourism after 9/11, and while it was nice for a couple of years to actually walk thru Times Square, for example, without having idiots stop short right in front of you in the middle of the street to snap pictures and take In the view, jobs were lost and businesses closed as a result. It wasn't a good time for the industry as a whole, but NY especially.

My main problem with tourists is that they just do stupid shit. I don't go out of my way to avoid a cluster of them standing on a corner when I'm trying to cross the street by banging into them with my purse or elbow. Certainly they don't stand on a corner with a green light blocking people from walking past where they live. And they're just plain rude in general. Learn how to say simple words like "Please", "Hello", "Thank You", "Excuse Me" in the country you're visiting. It's not that difficult. Really, I can't stand them.

I don't know what's going on in Spain, but it sounds more like a policing problem. Certainly if there were enough officers patrolling these areas it would cut down on a lot of the debauchery going on there.

...People think that these things only happen in Majorca and Salou...

Or any other coastal town in the U.S. during Spring Break or Senior Week.

Your description is more or less what spring break and senior week is like in beach towns across the U.S. every year. You could also match your description to football weekends at many large colleges.

Long story short, no reason to complain to anyone other than your local government for allowing it. As unruly as these people are, they are an influx of money for these towns and that's why they put up with it.

You sure they are not Americans?

Americans are amateurs when it comes to acting like dicks on vacation.

Agreed! There might be a few loudmouths in there, or obsessive flagwavers, but in my experience most Americans on vacation are very friendly and polite. Sometimes maybe mildly ignorant towards where they are and/or the local culture, but generally they're good folk.

They prefer to be dicks in other places, like on television. -_-

Agree 100%. American tourists are among the most "innocent" in the world. Sure, they can be clueless when it comes to local culture - but that's from being ignorant vs. rude....it's a huge difference. Locals may get annoyed by this, so that's why they poke fun at them....but other than that, I've rarely (if ever) witnessed any sort of violent or extremely rude confrontation caused by an American abroad. (Although it does happen...ask ARQ about that).

Come to think of it, the closest I've come was watching an older American in front of me, in line at an airport store in Italy. The American was trying to count out exact change so he could get a solid bill back. He handed the lady the paper money and before he could give her his change, she already rung the order up. (Some Italians, especially in cities like Rome, work at lightning speed in these situations)...so she gave him his change back and he said he wanted to give her his change., so he could get a bill back. So they went back and forth for a while, she refused....looked over at me (thinking I was Italian) and said something along the lines of, "Stupid, hard headed American".

 Classic.
