The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

Die Another Day is a terrible, awful film in general. Then Diamonds, which is a terrible Bond film, then AVTAK, which is a total 80's Bond film with a way too old Roger Moore.

You know, the more I think about it, I think Roger Moore might be my least favorite Bond by a wide margin. I hate saying that because in real life he's probably my favorite person to have played Bond.

Moore is the worst. Brosnan had worse films, but at least he could play the part.

I did not think Moore was that bad. He had his moments.

I really hope at least one Bond girl makes it to the end. Craig needs an ending where he gets the girl. Two of them die, one he just gets a peck on the cheek, another one dies, and that sexy Turkish or Greek girl was there for five minutes.

Moore is probably the "worst" Bond but that's not to say I don't like him. His portrayal just happens to be my least favourite of the six. George is saved by the fact that his one and only film is among the best of the entire series. To be honest though, he's pretty good for a guy who had no acting experience. I've seen worse performances from some actual star power.

What I don't understand is why in the Connery era we went from the terrific, utterly realistic, brutal fight in From Russia, to increasingly unrealistic and gimmicky fights and villains. Why did they not realize they'd hit upon something good? The only time we got anything near a brutal fight again in the Connery years was the final fight with Oddjob in Goldfinger--there's just a scariness to the character in his menacing silence, and it seems realistic that he would want to play with Bond, torture him, kill him slowly or beat him to death rather than just snap his neck--and the elevator fight in Diamonds Are Forever, which is on par with the train fight in From Russia with Love.

The one constant in the Bond franchise is, each Bond era tends to start dark(ish) and end campy and big budget gimmicky. Thus the Connery era, beginning with the semi-gritty first four films, ended with the gimmicky YOLT and high camp, DAF. The Brosnan era began with the dark thriller, Goldeneye, but culminated in the shitfest that is DAD.

That's how SPECTRE should be unveiled in the new film.

It is insane to think of Brosnan's run. You go from Goldeneye to Die Another Day... what the actual fuck?

One of the best of all time to one of the worst of all time. I've also always found it amusing that the Brosnan film most suited for a video game never got one.

I often thought The World Is Not Enough had, potentially; a darker, almost 'Craigian era' storyline (MI5 blown up, M kidnapped); a decent and atypically Bondian villain (Renard) played by a good actor (Carlyle); the goddess Sophie Marceau.

Unfortunately, Christmas Jones (Denise Richards) was bad casting and simply atrocious. The script had problems - something about gas pipe lines in Eastern Europe? I also thought Renard was underused in the end. He became an incidental character and they obviously did not know how to kill him off so just settled for the ole' missile in the stomach number. I desired a tragic death like Rutger Hauer's death in Blade Runner.

Brosnan was in one movie. One. That's it. No talking.

Yeah, that's it. There was an 11 year hiatus in the series.

It was an awful long wait yes.

Its too bad, Brosnan held so much promise only for the series to be shelved after one movie. He could've outdone Connery with more time. Who knows?

The thing with the new Bond films is, the darker atmosphere is fine, but I will always take issue with Craig. He literally has no charm, no grace and doesn't seem to have any enjoyment of the job at all. I liked Casino Royale a lot. But even Dalton's Bond enjoyed the job just a little, and since he was played by Timothy Dalton, had a little grace and elegance. Craig plays Bond more as strictly an emotionally detached/unhappy contract killer/assassin, which I think is only part of who Bond is.

Btw, this scene has always made want to go to Japan.

We have pointed out that The World is Not Enough and Skyfall had similar ideas. They just didn't know how to work it though and the director was just simply not up to the task. I think the producers realized they were not Cubby Broccoli who can run the production like he was the director. They needed a director who they can trust to be more independent. I think they've found that in Mendez.

Also, no way in hell Brosnan could have outdone Connery. But the follies of his films were learned.

There's a reason why TWINE is my second-favorite Brosnan movie, by a wide mile. I wish they would've continued with some of the pieces that were in place with that film (strong villan, better plot than TND, etc.) but instead they went the other route.

Speaking of which, I remember reading an interview where they (Broccoli/Wilson) basically said that after acquiring the rights to Casino Royale they wanted to go with a younger Bond... i.e they only made Die Another Day because it was the 40th anniversary. 9/11 only furthered that desire to reboot Bond into a more modern era.

Since Miser opened the door, Ima pop in here and say I find Daniel Craig as Bond to be massively overrated.

I'll also chuck in that Christopher Nolan is also massively overrated and he just makes the same bloody movie over and over again, and while I'm at it Christian Bale sucks too.
