2006 tour is the Best Axl has been and ever will be

Recommended Posts

I'm sorry but those braids are rediculous.

2002 braids maybe, but when he turned up at Hammerstein in 2006 with the shortened braids in a ponytail, I thought he looked awesome...

I'd cut off my left testicle and eat it, to get this Axl back ;)

I been watching youtube videos of the 2006 tour that where proshot and I have to say that Axl had the best tour of his life in 2006!!!

His vocals where very consistent during the whole tour and his physical shape was amazing.

The only time I can think of that he sounded that good was in late 87 and very early 88 he was only missing the rasp back then at the shows I went to.

Yes mickey mouse did happen but it wasn't bad and he had alot of power and he also had the rasp but did not over do it like in the UYI days and the 2010 tour.

Some will say vocally 2010 was better but I think he had way too much rasp, I love how he mixed the clean vocals with the rasp in 2006 it was a perfect fit.

Axl in 2010 was not near as fit as he was in 2006, he was all over the place in 06 not just on the ego ramps.

My only complaint with the 06 lineup was Robin he was very hit and miss live but that was common for him.

Take Download early on that concert looked like it was headed for disaster but they won the crowd over by mid show or so and it looked everyone there was having a blast.

RAR IMHO was one of the best shows of 06. Jungle was just so intense. Also the LA shows are very good.

Here is a video from that show which I think is one of the best live versions of Nightrain.

i sometimes wonder if Axl did any overdubbing on the Rock Am Ring gig, because even by the standards of '06, his voice was exceptionally strong that night. It's probably the longest, raspiest Jungle scream he's ever done. Nightrain was fantastic. And he sang certain songs like SoD with more deep rasp than I've heard him sing them with before. I guess he was just having a really solid night.

Universal Ampitheatre, Download and Rock Am Ring are my three favourite gigs from '06. Three of the best gigs he's ever done, period.

I think '06 was the best mix of the falsetto and rasp. On songs like Rocket Queen it was particularly resonant because he was actually singing the verses and when he needed to, he belted out certain parts (like the outro) with a good amount of rasp. Struck a perfect balance.

i love the old sweaty, gritty, rn'r-excess GN'R of the '90s but if you listen to Axl's "singing" here you can pretty much hear his vocal cords being shredded apart:

I think the '06 version probably would sound better to most people in terms of actual singing.

2010 was a good year vocally but for my taste he used too much rasp and it seemed very forced and his movements on stage where just to the ego ramps and that was about it.

2006 he had the cleaner vocals with some rasp, to me it was perfect, but that is was suits my tastes as far as Axl vocally and being more physical.

Also his look in 06 braids and all was badass!!!

In 2006 he had the badass rock star look and 2010 he had the pimp 70's porn star look going.

Most of the time back in the day he song like he had gravel in his voice. Yes he gave 100% and was extreme mobile but he sounded terrible if you ask me.

As I stated before in late 87 and very early in 88 I seen them twice and he had very clean vocals. The next time I seen them was opening for Aerosmith and he sounded like he was very hoarse and very strained, there was nothing clean about his vocals but he gave it all he had and GNR up staged Aerosmith that night, the crowd was more into GNR than Aerosmith and the crowd was also very diverse in age so it wasn't just young people it was people in there 40's through 60's I would say it was 50/50 young and older and GNR was on fire and Axl was Axl even though he sounded terrible he put on a hell of a show.

axl was looking and sounding great in 2006 but the best ever? every performance from 87-93 is better than any one from 01-14.

Sure

Every YCBM performance from 2006/2010 is better than this.

 That is atrocious. But later in the song you can hear his voice is essentially still good. Everything else is shite though. What was that anyway? Problems with his mic and his ear thing? Couldn't hear himself?

Axl was fucken perfect in 2006/07. Glad I got to see him tour in 2007. Looking back now, he was under-appreciated during the time. Some like the 2010 vocals better but he was in way better shape in 2006/07 and seemed to have more passion. 2011-2014 is a fucken trainwreck compared to either 2010 or 2006.

The passion part especially. In 2010 he was good (imo in 2006 better), but the main difference to me seems to be that he actually gave a crap in 2006. There was still that sense of hunger and having something to prove. Dare I say even a sense of danger. Personally, I missed that in 2010 (including the show I attended).

2006 was the last time the band seemed like a beast. Not sure who was added or who left but the raw hard rock organic feeling is gone.

That's easy isn't it?

Finck out, Ashba #terrible #emobitch #bulliedcrybaby #poser in.

"Performance" in this instance is denoting the quality of Axl's voice, not whether or not the microphone is turned on or not.

While I really like the 2010 performances, I hear something weird on the longer screams. It really seems to me like there is some sort of reverb or overdrive effect applied to the voice, eletronically.

I know it's ashba. I was trying to watch the pro shot of 2012 HOB Chicago yesterday to relive the show. During the end of jungle-best part- camera followed ashba as he turned his guitar upside and started frolicking around. Axl nails the end of the song and all I could do is sigh and say "aw god damn it ".

No.

Also, that was the second gig of the Use Your Illusion tour. I thought Axl was given a pass for the first gigs because they were warm-up gigs to him? Are we going to ignore that Axl was drunk and forgetting the lyrics of a brand new song?

No way anything from 2006 or 2010 can be better than the video posted, not only regarding Axl's voice but because... you know, the group of musicians that wrote and recorded You Could Be Mine were playing the song.

2006 was the best year overall for NuGuns. Not as good as any of the old years because obviously. Better than 2002 because Axl's voice was so much better and he didn't look like Flavor Flav. Better than 2010 because he didn't look like Tony Clifton and there was no Ashba, although the voice in 2010 was arguably slightly better. And better than 2011-Present because obviously.

2006 was a great time to be a fan. Axl in RS, the leaks, the Hammerstein shows, Jesus Finck, Axl's vocal power and stage presence, Down on the Farm, HD commercial with Better, The great Euro tour, Izzy! and so much more.

Really glad I got to see them twice that year (still the last time I've ever seen a full band show, Bridge School doesn't count). Saw them at the Warfield, which was sold-out and then the infamous Post-firing of Merck letter show in Oakland where Lars played on Out Ta Get Me.

I miss those days of coming on the forum and reading some crazy, excited news.

^ This... I always laugh when people say that any new lineup of Axls new bands played the old songs better than the band that wrote and recorded them, sure they play them well, but I can play the songs, I didn't write them though.

There will always be a difference of opinions on Axls voice, I personally like his 93 and 06 voice, and I liked his 02 voice, go listen to Leeds, Boston or MSG, rarely does he go as badly off key as he does post 2006.
