Film sequels that surpassed their originals.

Recommended Posts

I know this has been done before but it's a new year....and it's been a while.....so here goes....

I just recently watched the Batman Dark Knight Trilogy and can easily say that the both the Dark Knight and the Dark Knight Rises surpassed Batman Begins. And in my opinion, The Dark Knight Rises was by far the best film out of the 3.

This thread is opinion based....so what are some films that you think surpassed their originals?

Yup. Only trilogy I can think of where the third is my favourite.

I thought Amazing Spider-Man 2 was miles better than the first, which I thought was awful. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man was good, but his Spider-Man 2 was a near-masterpiece.

Empire Strikes Back is leaps and bounds above the other Star Wars films.

How is Dark Knight Rises part of a trilogy? Fuck me, they were up to 4 Batman films with Chris O Donnell at the point where I stopped paying attention.

It was essentially a reboot with Batman Begins. And actually, they were based off the Dark Knight comics....a much darker version of Batman.

Kill Bill Vol. 2

I remember loving Vol. 1, and dreading Vol. 2 because I read that it was gonna have more dialogue, and I thought a lot of the dialogue in Vol. 1, which I still enjoyed, was overwrought and cheesy. But the dialogue in Vol. 2 was great, and the film overall was just so much more emotionally effective.

Dark Knight/Dark Knight Rises

Kill Bill Vol. 2

Terminator 2

The Empire Strikes Back

And Aliens is not better than Alien in any way, shape, or form in my book. Alien is about as damn near perfect as a film gets.

i'm a big cameron fan and all but i agree. alien was just a sleek, dark, perfect horror-thriller film. aliens is fun and all and i do quite enjoy it but it's also overlong (Especially the director's cut!), loud, noisy. it's a good companion piece to the first film BECAUSE it's completely different in tone, approach and genre (action instead of horror, etc.) but i think Alien is just crafted so perfectly and beautifully and this is coming from someone who thinks Ridley Scott shortly thereafter became a hack for hire.

Yeah, the dialogue in Vol. 2 is much better. Besides that though, the big thing for me is between the two films, Vol. 2 has pretty much the entire plot, and Vol. 1 just has a bunch of action sequences. And I know a lot of that comes down to the fact that the studio decided to release it in two parts, but Vol. 1 just never quite gelled for me. It's like, my mom was really getting into Tarantino after she saw Django but she's not into that really over-the-top violence at all, so I only showed her Vol. 2. And it hit me that it totally works as a stand-alone film, because there's so few major plot points in Vol. 1.

On another note: I know it's actually a prequel, but Temple Of Doom is my favorite Indiana Jones film.

The Empire Strikes Back is not a sequel, it is the middle act of a trilogy. I hate it when people call it a sequel because that is just false. Sequels are films that have their own beginning, middle, and end. Everything is wrapped up in a neat little package when the film is over, if it ends on a cliff hanger, than the story is not finished. Empire is the prefect example of this, when the film is finished, the story is not, therefore it should be disquallified from all sequel discussion, same goes for Evil Dead 2, The Two Towers, The Desolation of Smaug, Back to the future 2, etc.

Now that we have disqualified all middle acts of a trilogy, we can have a REAL sequel debate.

I also feel VERY strongly that any truly great sequels have to bring something unique or different to the story. It can't just be the same as the first, just with different characters.

IMO these best TRUE sequels of all time are (I'm not saying they are superior to the originals, but they are stand alone great films).

Aliens

T2

Superman 2

A nightmare on Elm Street 3 the dream warriors

Friday the 13th the final chapter

Halloween 2

Godfather Part 2 (even though it is considered part of The Godfather trilogy, it is only a trilogy because they made 3 films, not because it is a TRUE trilogy.)

Amityville horror 2 The Possesion

Dark Knight (again this film is a sequel even though they made 3 films, it is NOT a true trilogy).

These are the ones that come to mind off the top of my head.

Again let me say, 3 films DOES NOT make a trilogy. That is one original and 2 sequels. Godfather, Batman Begins, and many many more ARE NOT trilogies. Star Wars (4,5,6,) Lord of the rings, Back to the future, Evil Dead, etc those are trilogies.

I totally see where you're coming from and I respect your opinion on the whole trilogy thing.....but it's definitely your opinion....so, we'll leave it at that..... :P

Edit: Personally I think that any series of films that also tells a larger story (along with a stand alone) counts as a trilogy....or a series of films, etc.

@Kasinova King,

You are right to say "that is your opinion" but it is an opinion held by many film makers. That is why the films that I mentioned as "true trilogies" tend to be held in very high reguard. It's just very common in today to call all 3 film series trilogies, but it's just not true. As much as people like Nolan's Batman series it is not a trilogy, not anymore than xmen 1,2,3 is a trilogy. I just hold the idea of a "Trilogy" in very high reguard. All of which imo are absolutle pinnacles of not only film making but story telling in general. The more films we let into this club, the less exclusive the club becomes. Sort of how steroids killed the 500 home run club in baseball. If we let all 3 film series into the trilogy club, than that club doesn't feel as great as it once did. I'm not saying Nolan's Batman or even the great Godfather films are not excellent films, because they are, but "True Trilogies" they are not.

I think the Dark Knight series was absolutely a trilogy..... to the very definition of the word, actually. People just viewing the films (that aren't aware of its origins, the Dark Knight Comics) may not know any better, but the trilogy is a much darker story of Batman....and yes, the trilogy tells a much larger story.....just like the comic.

ROTJ is my fave Star Wars film. The final battle is the best thing ever.

In Casino Royale the Bond film continuity was reset so I could say that I liked Skyfall more than the two Bond films before it

To me, Skyfall isn't really a sequel - it's just another film in the Bond franchise. It has zero plot points in common or carried over from Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace. The only Bond films that I think can truly be considered sequels are Quantum Of Solace, From Russia With Love, and Diamonds Are Forever (And it's still a pretty flimsy connection on those last two). If we're calling Skyfall a sequel, than by that logic every Bond film other than Dr. No and Casino Royale is a sequel.
