Maybe we could blank out Ashba and BBF... and put a Question mark over their blacked out figures.I can easily adjust my banner when anyone new is announced, but given this is the last lineup it makes sense to keep it the way it is. If Axl just wanted a touring guitarist, surely there were more competent candidates? People argue about DJ's existing fanbase but I seriously doubt he brought a huge number of people to GNR gigs who wouldn't have come without him.There may be more competent guitarists, but most of them are probably more established and more expensive. DJ probably looked appealing because he wasn't a big name, he had an open schedule, he had a modern rock sound (I'm not going to debate the quality, I'm just saying!), and he wasn't someone who could dominate the band with personality or reputation, who could potentially strong-arm Axl into anything. If Axl hired a renowned guitarist with an existing fanbase who was already fairly well off financially, he'd have less incentive to hang around during the quiet times when they're not touring, and he may be more likely to try to whine about wanting to record new stuff when they're off the road. If Zakk Wylde or someone like that joined the band these days it wouldn't be for the money or the touring, it would be because he wants to be part of GN'R and wants to make music. Plus, how appealing is GN'R to big musicians like Wylde who know about the band's recent (lack of) output and constant touring? Wouldn't it be a blow to a more established guitarist to join a seeming legacy act for endless touring?Just speculation on my end, but it seems fairly obvious to me Axl doesn't want any huge names in the band who can upstage him or be his equal, I'm not saying he views them merely as paid employees but certainly he's the boss and he's trying to spare costs and frustration and hiring relative no-names makes it easier for him to retain full control and they're hungry enough that they need the touring money and will shut up and go along with whatever is being asked of them.
