jz1276
I've been watching Youtube clips for hours of the tour and Axl sounds... like Axl. I think this is the best he has sounded in 20 years I'd like to think that it's due to the return of Slash & Duff that let Axl get the rasp back but sadly there must be some vocal processing going on right? Even songs like Rocket Queen & November Rain where Mickey voice was at an all time high sound great now. What do you guys think?

I don't see why it's sad to have his old vocal coach helping him again. That means that he is motivated for all this thing. And this motivation surely stems from being again with Slash and Duff (and the ACDC thing as well).

If you like rasp, then his voice is definitely not the best it's been in 20 years. Check out some 2010 videos. He sounded waaaayyyy more raspy back then. Popular Post Nosaj Thing
Mickey is still present but Axl is giving his best, so... can't complain. Plus, you now have REAL Gn'R members Slash and Duff to focus your attention on. Every single video I find myself waiting for Slash's solos.

People are gonna call me an apologist, but from what I've seen, Axl is giving 100% and that's all I can ask for. There is a VAST difference for me in the effort level between the last time I saw GN'R and these shows. Does he sound perfect on everything at every show? Nope. Far from it. HOWEVER, he gives way more of a shit then I've seen him give since Hammerstein 2006 and Detroit 1993 before that. That matters way more to me then whether or not he uses rasp every night on NR, YCBM or SCOM. As for Slash... dude is killing it. Anyone saying otherwise is unreasonable in their dislike for Slash. That dude is absolutely killing his own material and bringing new life to shit he didn't even right. If Axl looks like he gives a shit, then Slash looks like he's giving ALL of the fucks possible.

Don't really understand these "OMGZ IT'S THE BEST AXLS SOUNDED IN 20 YEARZ11!!1"-people though, especially if rasp is their criteria for a good voice. "This second line in the first verse of jungle is the best Axl has sounded since 1988, but this third word in the chorus is a complete disaster, full Mickey, he's already lost his voice, the reunion is over" I'm really enjoying these shows, even though the time zones don't give me a chance to watch it live. Axl is doing great, so is Slash and Duff. The energy, stage presence and overall feeling is what matters. I don't care about a couple of missed notes, you can see that they're having fun and putting everyhing into it. And that's what makes me happy. Pedrolg
With Guns he sounds better than 02 and 11-14 for sure. Not as raspy as some would like, but he sounds good, his clean voice is also better and more powerful. With AC/DC he sounds like an absolute force of nature. All things considered it's a great year for Axl. Even with diminished skills he is still a very impressive singer.

All things considered it's a great year for Axl. Even with diminished skills he is still a very impressive singer. I agree. Axl is giving everything he has for these reunion shows as well as for the AC/DC ones. Is his voice at 1993 or 2006 level, let alone 1988? No (he seems more motivated now than 2006 and 2010 though). It doesn't mean that he's not still a very good singer and a great frontman, better than most out there. And he still has something no one else has: the versatility in his singing and the ability to transform his voice and style from song to song so much that it gives the impression it's another person singing. It's not just a matter of hitting the notes and vocal range (others have wide range, too), it's mostly about feeling it. Axl still growls like a wild animal on Jungle and Out Ta Get Me, he sounds fragile with this whiny voice (raspy or not) on Estranged and This I Love, he can sing Back In Black like a demon (since we now have the AC/DC repertoire too), and he makes Patience, this simple and "easy-to-sing" ballad, with his natural tender and soulful voice, a song that could be sung in a church or something. I don't know, maybe I'm exaggerating here, but I think no singer alive can do this, at least to such an extent. I see that the majority of fans here appreciate only the rasp, but I like Axl's "natural" voice (I don't know if the term is correct, I mean the voice he uses e.g. for the main part of Patience and the verses of Civil War) as much as the raspy one. November Rain will be fine for me if they slow it down and Axl sings it with this voice. Slash seemed a bit aloof in the April shows (in the Artisan News clip he said that he didn't expect much and he didn't give it much thought, he'd just go up and play). But now he's not just 100% in it, he almost owns the show. And Axl seems very happy that Slash shines on the stage. SWINGTRADER
It didn't take a reunion to bring back the rasp because it has not returned. ACDC did that for him, not Guns. He doesn't seem to care enough about GNR to sing correctly. I am still wondering what motivated him to sing the way he did in 2010. That is still a mystery. Whatever it was, I wish it happened again. Tom-Ass
I've heard Mickey for sure at times.. Some performances of RQ, YCBM, Sweet Cild. PC.. I think he is supposed to sound like that on Better.. It is definitely less prevalent that it used to and seemed to come out more during the early shows. It seems to be on the verge of coming out at other times but you can hear Axl fighting it. He could sound better at times but seems to be giving it 100% and that is good enough for me. He does seem winded at times during the more challenging songs. I bet dropping about 20-40 pounds would help with that
