Got some mates who are scousers, when it happened obviously it was awful, but on top of that the way red banner media played into and inflated the sterotype of them was sick. They basically said that supporters were stealing wallets from bodies when they were not. It was classism mixed with a sort of within borders xenophobia. Yuck. There's a great and recent book about the rivalry between Liverpool FC and Manchester United (and between the cities of Liverpool and Manchester). Highly recommend. Such feuds bring out the worst in people. I still remember my first Liverpool vs ManU match at Old Trafford, I was sat close to the LFC supporters and it was fascinating to see how the supporters would spent the entire game just screaming at each other.
