Derick Posted February 21, 2018 Share Posted February 21, 2018 Well my fav version is not an option here but I will say it anyway..It’s RIR 2011, I know that was a mess but there’s something emotional in that performance that I didn’t see anymore.. Axl was so much better singing Estranged back then it’s not even funny. Also blasphemy of me but I never disliked Ron’s take on Estranged either. The synth additions on the ‘11 version also make it sound like an awesome orchestral badass version of one of my favorite ballads ever. It sounds good to my ears but hey, opinions are opinions.Vocally the thing is at least Axl sort of tried to sing it the way he did in the studio version back in ‘11, these days it’s 100% clean voice which ruins the whole song for me. Noticed the tempo thing also. 11 seemed to have it down precisely as the album version was played. Axl soon learned to sing Estranged with his clean voice after this show, but happy that his instincts were to sing it towards the album vocals the first couple tries. That clean voice is ridiculous, I can't believe he works so hard to implement it in nearly every song now. But yes 2016 version is way too fast I was going to make this more about the vocals, but I figured there would be some purist or Slash fans that still enjoy Slash playing this over anything else. And all opinions are great! I liked RIR11 but that night as a whole was a mess and Chile's estranged was better imo, and Houston was odd bc he used his clean voice but every note was rounded out with a hint of rasp..not understanding why he didn't just sing it closer to his speaking voice. If he wasn't stuck in the clean vocal style the Houston version could have been amazing. He had the voice he needed on him that night. I'm sure I've shared this before but a concert I went to in 2013 had an odd ending on estranged. At 8:12 Axl just started using rasp out of nowhere and finished the song with it.
