With a possible new tour around the corner, what would motivate you to go see GNR again

Hey All,

With the latest tweet by Fernando, hints by Richard, and general rumors floating around of another tour being launched in the fall/winter, it got me thinking about ways GNR could motivate me to attend a future show that did not contain new material. When it comes to the show they've been putting on, I think I'm checked out (like most people around here). But I was thinking about ways GNR could possibly put on another show that didn't require new songs and might possibly get me to attend.

I'm thinking there's a few measures they could do to get me to go. The first would be to stop playing the same tired Chinese Democracy songs they've been playing for 3 years (and in some cases, 12) and play some of the songs they hardly, if ever, play. While perhaps keep Better, it would be great if they stopped playing Madgascar, Street of Dreams, Sorry, Chinese Democracy, This I Love and possibly Shacklers and started playing some stuff of Chinese Democracy that they don't normally play. This includes Catcher, Prostitute, and bring back I.R.S. I know it's a tough song to sing, but if Axl could pull off TWAT once in awhile it would be amazing. Maybe throw in Oh My God for good measure. This would require Axl to really get himself into shape and focus on getting his vocals in perfect order. Long shot for sure, but it could be done. If this meant a shorter show, i'd be fine with this so long as they're performing some of these more challenging songs that don't get played very much.

In terms of older material, they could drop off at least one of the UYI covers (if not both) and replace those with newer covers (not AC/DC). Not going to speculate what those could be (I think there's other threads for that), but two new covers would definitely freshen up the set (maybe something off TSI?). While obviously they'd have to keep Jungle, Sweet Child, Paradise City (and maybe Patience), perhaps they could start rotating in and out some of the AFD stuff. Like Mr. Brownstone, It's So Easy, Rocket Queen, Nightrain, My Michelle, Out Ta Get Me; they could mix those up on a regular basis but never let the crowd know what order they're coming (useful for people like us and those who go to multiple shows).

I think ultimately for me, if they want to bring me back without playing new music, they're going to have to go back to some of the deeper cuts from Lies and the UYI albums. I'd say lose You Could Be Mine (helps Axl save his voice) and replace it full time with Civil War (I think most people prefer this song now anyway). Bring back songs like Yesterdays, Locomotive, Dead Horse, The Garden, You Ain't the First, Perfect Crime, and hell, why not the alt version of Don't Cry. I think dusting off the acoustic version of You're Crazy would be a great touch as well. And while November Rain is one of my favourite songs, perhaps they don't need to play it every show. I know it's held in the same regard as Jungle, SCOM, and Paradise City, but it's just a thought.

I think there's enough back material for GNR to get by on another North American tour without having to release new music. Obviously we all want new music, but if they were to change the show up enough like how I outlined above, I would definitely make it out to a show or two.

Hell, I'd rather have the show I just outlined than the same show we've been getting for the last 6 years plus a new song or two. I went to see them in Hamilton last November solely to hear Estranged performed live, but I doubt I'd drop $100 on a very similar show for the sake of hearing one or two new songs live.

Another possibility of getting my attention is if some of the older members were to start showing up for guest appearances or prolonged stints during the tour. You get Axl and Slash on the same stage and I'd be there regardless of what they played. Or perhaps you have Duff, Matt and Izzy play a few shows.

Just thinking out loud here. Any thoughts?

I will go as long as they come to Florida no matter what. If there was a reunion I would go anywhere in the world to see it

I agree they should switch up Chinese songs. Catcher live is a great song, so was ITW.

I think they're trying to use this year to cover as many places as possible, which sounds like throwing darts at a world map, or picking cool places to visit on the days off.

I don't think they're expecting people to go to multiple shows, esp. when the setlist has very little change to it. Most people would go see them every couple of years, unless there's back to back shows relatively close. But then you never know if the night you chose not to go, you missed something.

Realistically-

1) play some of the lesser played CD songs more: i'm not expecting Prostitute or Riad at all, its evident that they are probably too taxing to sing for Axl altogether in a live setting. But Catcher especially is one that leaps out as a fairly simple song to sing.

2) debut new music and/or play the new version of Oh My God

3) change up the setlist more. I saw Springsteen and PJ this summer and it was great not knowing, aside from a few songs, what you would hear. This was even after I scouted the half dozen or so shows before to see what they played and it was clearly a complete mixture

4) Play a couple of lesser known old hits more often. I loved it when they played Nice Boys in '10. Was perhaps one of my highlights. Don't see why they couldn't consider bringing back Double Talkin' Jive, Pretty Tied Up, Yesterdays. They're not that tough to sing at all.

Mainly new music would get me going again. If it was the same setlist as this year, but with 2 new songs, I'd be delighted. If they don't wanna debut new material just yet then they need to think about shaking up the setlist quite a bit: it'd be great if there was only about 8 staple songs that get played from night to night, and then the other 12-14 songs were picked from a potential optional setlist containing 30 or so tracks (which could include some covers like Dead Flowers, Rosie etc.)

I probably wouldn't. I saw them twice in NYC on the UCAP tour, but then when they came to my neck of the woods in Philly/AC, I decided against it, because I was bored of the setlist. There's only so many times you can see the same songs, played in the same order, over and over again.

Yeah, I'm in the same place as you are. I've seen GNR 14 times since 2002 and while there has been an evolution in the setlist over the past 10 years, it still follows the same similar pattern. You know WTTJ, Brownstone, ISE, Live and Let Die are going to near the top, KOHD, Nightrain will close out the show, and Paradise City finishes off the encore. I'm not saying they need to drastically change the order every night, but changing the order from one tour to the other would really help motivate me buying another ticket.

See, I was thinking about this and I'm not sure if I'd go if it were the same setlist and two new songs. Like I said, it was great hearing Estranged being performed live last year, but to drop another $70-$100 to essentially hear the same show with an additional two songs isn't worth it for me. As I've seen the show so many times, I suppose I'm in an unique position where seeing GNR isn't what it once was. It's always a great show, but it's had the same flow and feel for the better part of 10 years. Not that the setlist they've been playing this past year hasn't be great (I've always said that it really is the dream setlist for any GNR fan), but for people like myself who've seen them perform so many times, a GNR show no longer has the same draw. I know I'm in the small minority, but I don't think anyone attending the show would mind a drastic change so long as they got their main hits (Jungle, SCOM, Paradise City, NR). GNR has so many other great songs that are sitting on the shelf. Throwing those into the mix and changing up the order would be of much more interest to me than the same basic structure we've been getting plus one or two new songs.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there.

So Richard Fortus talked about an intention to finish CD II & then tour North America; evidence occurs via Fernando to vouch for that happening, but fans are complaining?

Heh, most fans of the current lineup aren't complaining, just the usual cupcakes, and those current fans who actually are complaining do it because they fear it will be another tour w/o anything new in the bag.

‘Fans’ doesn’t indicate a majority; it represents anybody complaining in this context. I personally am happy that what Richard has been saying is so far providing to be credible.

id go if slash came back trololololololo

but really, i would go no matter what. ive seen GNR 3 times since 2010 and the set really is a fans dream (especially when compared to other bands)

that being said, if new songs are not on the horizon than an all new set would be awesome

something like,

1. Welcome to the Jungle

2. Mr. Brownstone

3. Shackler's Revenge

4. 14 Years (with Izzy)

5. The Garden

6. Better

7. Estranged

- (Richard Solo)

8. If The World

9. You're Crazy (acoustic)

10. Dead Flowers (acoustic)

11. Catcher In The Rye (acoustic)

12. Patience (acoustic with Izzy)

- (Jam/ Axl Solo)

13. November Rain (acoustic with electric outro)

14. Rocket Queen

15. Locomotive

16. Out ta get Me

17. Think About You (with Izzy)

- (Jam)

(DJ Solo)

18. Sweet Child O' Mine

19. You Could Be Mine

20. Breakdown

21. Civil War

(Ron Solo)

22. Don't Cry

23. Knockin' On Heaven's Door

24. Scraped

25. Nightrain

_________

26. Chinese Democracy

- (Jam)

27. There Was A Time

28. Dust N' Bones (with Izzy)

29. Paradise City (with Izzy)

Maybe a little unrealistic... but would be epic

I didnt put in Coma because it would be "unrealistic" looking at the set that is a dumb reason lol

Every time the band come round I will go and see them, they are my favourite band and you never know when it's the last time you will see them. I had the chance to see Queen in '86 and because of other commitments I didn't go, they never toured again and Freddie died so I'll never pass up the opportunity to see GnR just in case.

They are going to play 90% same setlist...if there is a tour because i think BF will leave.

Don't think so, the money is too good, actually I think that and the fame are the main reasons BF and other band members haven't parted ways with Axl.

I dont know If fame has a whole lot to do with It. If you were to stop each person you come across In one day, I very seriously doubt even one of them would know all the members of the band, I would even go one step further and bet that none of them would even know two other members besides Axl. It has to be about the money.

But I highly doubt t he fact that they would ever be more famous than they are now.
