axlslash
^Congrats Bacardi. The Oilers and their fans deserve competent management, though it'll be tough to screw up McDavidWho else saw this Patty Kane spin pass last night? My god. There's magic in those tiny South Buffalo handshttps://www.facebook.com/NHL/videos/10152726868992466/Even sexier than his spin-o-rama pass from a couple years agohttp://youtu.be/bIP0f2hYdtY Edited April 24, 2015 by axlslash
bt88
Has Islanders/Caps been kinda boring to anyone else or just me? Pens/NYR was a little bit too. The west seems to have the edge on exciting playoff series this year

axlslash
Yeah, I didn't see that one coming at all. I figured Pens-Rangers or Sens-Habs would be the best one this round, but Wings-Bolts has been absolutely unreal. Both teams deserve to move on. bt88
Kronwall should be suspended for game 7 after this hit but he probably won't. Total garbage play. bt88
Scoring is quite low right now. The avg save percentage right now is .924, higher than it was in the "dead puck" era. Goals per game is comparable to then as well. The NHL seems to be turning a blind eye to this. Hockey fans dont mind a good 1-0 tight checking game but you'll never grow the game that way. Interesting that Calgary and Montreal could be on their way out, given that both teams were near the bottom of the league in possession. if they're bounced, then every team left will have been top tier in possession stats except Anaheim who were mid pack and they trended up toward the end of the year. While those stats arent guarantees they have been great predictors over the past few years. Also, good thoughts on scoring depth and how it's lead to the lighting's success. They have barely got anything out of Stamkos and Callahan but are still succeeding thanks to good depth on offensehttp://www.cbssports.com/nhl/eye-on-hockey/25173724/lightning-find-value-where-other-teams-are-afraid-to-go Edited May 5, 2015 by bt88

I don't see why people are resistant to them. They just provide advanced intelligence is all. Anything you can do to understand the game further. Also its funny when a team like Calgary pops up people are always like WHERE ARE YOUR FANCY STATS NOW! I mean, statistical anomalies happen. The stats aren't gospel, just general indicators. Brian Burke will be signing 6'7 goons to his team until he's dead.
magisme
Part of the problem is the whole "advanced" thing, I think. Like, how is puck possession "advanced," other than that no one really paid much mind to it before? It's not. It's a basic fucking stat. Yes, you're an idiot if you don't think it matters who has the puck more, but you're also an idiot if you think you've discovered the rosetta stone when you talk about possession. You know?

Brian Burke will be signing 6'7 goons to his team until he's dead. My favorite was Toronto last year. They were killin' it at the midpoint, and those "where are your advanced stats gods now, nerdboy?" idiots started popping up. Then the Leafs crashed and burned in a giant dumpster fire of a collapse, and it all came crashing down. It always days. Always. It's like gambling. Just because you won $100 bucks playing blackjack at the casino today doesn't mean that the odds aren't stacked against you long-run.

You know?Right, I mean they're "advanced" because there's a lot more thinking involved in compiling them. To get it really accurate, you need the puck-tracking tech that the NHL tested out at the all-star game. I see why they call them "advanced" or whatever, but I definitely agree that fancy names mask the fundamental objectivity of the numbers. We're not talking about stuff like baseball's Wins Above Replacement (a fine stat that I "believe in," mind you, but definitely a greater bit of algebraic wizardry) or the QB rating in football (which I have never understood - if 158.3 or whatever is "perfect" how the hell did you get there?), it's straight forward: if you have the puck more and shoot the puck more, you're probably going to win more often than lose. The stat compilation may be "advanced," but the concept is pretty simple.
CheapJon
Don't care about "advanced stats" at all. I get why some do and all but I don't need them.
axlslash
Don't care about "advanced stats" at all. I get why some do and all but I don't need them. That's fine, I don't think that as fans we really need to follow stats at all, just watch the game and enjoy it. But there's a difference between not caring and saying they're not real or whatever. So how 'bout those predictions that the Wild finally had a team that could push Chicago to the brink, huh? After the first game I predicted that we'd have a 2010 WCF-style series. Every game has been competitive, but we're gonna sweep em, maybe they get us to 5 if they're lucky but no further. Bring on them Ducks!
