I'm into military marches right now. They range from anonymously written folk sentimental ditties to classically commissioned pieces from leading composers like Beethoven, Schubert and Strauss, and from songs about 'onions' to patriotic anthems and all nations have their different styles. French ones are the most playful and at the highest tempo; they are full of horns and bugle interludes. Prussian/Germanic ones are stomping dramatic ones - it is those that are most militaristic sounding. British ones are somewhere between the two extremes and possessing a certain dignified stateliness. Currently I am listening to Napoleonic French ones. Here are some favourites,

The true Imperial March,

Playful one,

Very stately,

When a French regiment attacked, this is what they played, Victoire est à nous, ''Victory is Ours'',

It isn't as odd as it seems. Marches were very popular in the 18th and 19th centuries - not just something for armies to play but among a wider popular culture. Many of the great composers wrote marches, Beethoven (Yorkscher Marsch), Schubert (Three Marches Militaires), Mozart, Haydn, Brahms. They were seen as divertimenti like Lieder and various dances (e.g. polkas, waltzes) which reached beyond courtly circles. Marches were even integrated into longer more serious works: Eroica, Beethoven's 3rd, has a movement which is a slow march.
