"The General" is officially delayed... but "The General" AND "Monsters" is (unofficially) out of the bag

Comparing the new version to the old phone bit they've definitely changed it a bit. On the old recording there's a little breakdown between the chorus and the solo where now they just roll into each other - kinda miss the Estranged vibe of that solo tbh but still kicks ass

"One of my favorite songs is this song called 'The General', which is so... it's by far the heaviest metal tune I think ive ever heard Axl do, this slow, grinding riff with these high, piercing vocals, screaming vocals. [...] [Axl] goes, 'Well, this comes out on the third record. It relates to this song, it's a trilogy, this goes with this lyrically.'" (Baz, Metal Edge, 11/06/07)

"[Bach] says Rose told him that a slow, grinding track called 'The General' is 'the sequel to [Use Your Illusion II's] 'Estranged,' that goes to the parable that Del James wrote of the trilogy' (James penned the short story that inspired the 'November Rain' video)." (Rolling Stone, 06/25/08)"

So Baz was correct on the slow grinding riff, high vocals and screams. I don't see it as a sequel to estranged however

Because the leaks are previous versions to the one they played live in 2010

The debate of if this is the Slash version or if its a demo, is it possible it is both?  Quite some time has passed since 2021 or whenever Slash reworked these Chinese tunes, I can easily imagine rough mixed and unfinished bounced MP3s making their way to even one person who sent it to a friend, who sent it to another friend, and now the leaker is throwing us a bone cause of the vinyl delay

I think it's both, but it's clearly not the vinyl version (in my opinion)

Leave Me Alone," "Seven," and "The General" could also feature on the new album. These three A-listed songs were worked on by Marco Beltrami, especially "Seven," which Marco deems as the best of the three songs. It has also been reported that Marco worked on a fourth track, "Thyme." However, this song was not worked on subsequent to Marco's work in October 2002. (Jeff Leeds, Sp1at website, 06/05)

So is Monster seven or is it completely different?

I think Monsters is Leave Me Alone (which, as per Axl, was later renamed to Soul Monster).

I think there is a weird in between here. No way these are final and ready for release, and it sounds like Bucket doing the General solo and Slash on Monsters

Yeah I agree that last solo in The General sounds so Buckethead-esque especially with the way Bucket's notes sound when he goes into fast runs.  I am still unsure regarding the intro wah-wah part though, both Bucket and Slash both use wah pedals a ton in their phrasing and I keep going back-and-forth on that one lol

Just poured the last of my good tequila for the first official listen (Kirkland tequila. Can't get in Canada where I am so it's the good stuff to me).

Ive spent since what, 2007? I was 16. That's half my life. And I'm listening to it. Finally. Holy shit.

I love it. It's nothing like I expected, but wow. I understand the B-side choice. I don't see casual fans accepting this. But I'm in love. I hope it's the slash version, cuz I feel the chorus of the general could sound like recent Axl, but it's entirely possible I just want to hear things.

It was a long afternoon. I had them saved on my phone within 5 minutes of them leaking (got extremely lucky on checking), but I wasn't gunna let my first listen be through a phone speaker in the office. Glad I waited.

Fuck this band. They show promise, let me down, I swear up and down to myself I'm over it, and they rope me back in. I'm ready for another round of disappointment and frustration.

This shit is not for casual fan. This is like a 2020s version of The Garden and Coma

Pretty much the same scenario for me.

Had been home most the day, nipped out for food when they surfaced.

Waited until I got back home, good headphones, quality local beer and a single malt poured then got them cranked.
